If he needs a breather, we then give the games and develop Witts. This is the way to go. For too long we have neglected the development of our own home grown rucks. We now have 2 prospects, one a project although promising and the other a freak gun. And at worst, if either of them goes down and we have to go to him as a last resort, we have Ben Hudson.

A little birdie told me that Lachie Keeffe will be given extensive ruck training over the pre season too, with an eye to playing that secondary ruck role at times if we get injuries. He will still be the third tall key defender on the depth chart but at times he may be called upon to go forward or into the ruck.

This tells me we are intending to play White almost as a permanent forward with Lynch, Witts and Keeffe taking the secondary ruck role in 2014.

I'd be disappointed if we intended to play White and Lynch together.

White should replace Lynch. Full stop.

Ben Reid should become the permanent forward to support Cloke. It was evident that this is our best setup.

Keeffe looks far more comfortable down back. I don't mind him adding another string to his bow but I'd be more comfortable having him in defence with Brown and having Cloke, Reid and White as our trio. No room for Lynch.

Would have done that in a heart beat. Opportunity lost imo.
WTF. He's possibly the worst no.1 ruck in the comp. Excellent contested mark and good kick for goal but he's a very ordinary tap ruckman nor does he get a heap of it around the ground. His primary job is to tap it to his midfielders, and he doesn't do it as well as almost all no.1 rucks in the comp.

My one eyed biased St.Kilda supporter has always thought the same and he's stoked to have traded him. While I'm not a huge fan of Hickey from what I've seen, at least he's a decent tapper.

Based on VFL games when Grundy played mainly as a forward, he was average from all reports. Grundy is a 1st ruck. That's where he does his best work.

Just turned 21.....still a puppy for a ruckman.
All I see is green shoots & a few leaves......too early to determine if it's a potato or a truffle (underneath the growth).
He's probably only on an AFL list because of his height, if he was 5cm shorter there would be no raPts on him IMO, I'm not saying he won't make it, but he's going to take a very long time IMO.

Keeffe needs more then training to become competent in the ruck.

Can't agree. McEvoy was close to St Kildas best player and will flourish even more in a good team like Hawthorn much like Hale.

Would agree with that assessment, he's great dropping back and taking intercept marks, reads the play quite well and is pretty quick for a big bloke, but not a dominant tap ruckmam (to date at least). But a good leader by all reports, and on balance an OK get for the Hawks for mine.

If he was 5cm taller he wouldn't be able to drive a car.
Jury certainly out, however Collingwood Football department see something to offer him a 3 year extension.

Really do not want to get rid of Witts, as much as I love Grundy and think he must be 1st Ruck, Witts showed a lot last season and although I don't believe he has the mobility to play permanent forward, I believe we should invest in him and see what happens.
On the Heath Shaw issue I understand he is 99% gone but what happens if he gets back from holiday and says to Bucks he wants to stay and will do whatever, is it possible that it would happen and would Bucks have him back or have relations deteriorated too much for that to happen. I still believe he is a highly talented footballer, could be a part of any success we have in the future, and became a poster boy for our problems against Port, of which he was the one that annoyed me the least.
Obviously the 'holding onto the past' speech meant significant changes were going to happen and for me Heater was part of that

I agree with this also. I think I read that McEvoy had the worst hit out/contest ratio in the AFL (37%). Most of his games he gets absolutely towelled up in the hit outs. His strength is filling holes and taking grabs in defense.

As far as Witts goes, he's been a senior player for 2 years coming from a non AFL background and he's shown good signs. Ruckmen traditionally take 4+ years to become decent. It's not like he's a Cam Wood type player who lacks effort or doesn't go into a contest.

Witts' problem is his haricut. Shocking representation of a hair style.

there's nothing wrong with adding Keeffe to the ruck training roster, it might even help his development as a KB, it should only be for emergencys on game day though IMO.

Grundy and White should be our rucks injuries permitting.
