Great Performances in a Saints Gurnsey

Hard to go past Nicky Winmar's BOG performance in the 1996 Ansett Cup GF win, he was on absolute fire that night.

ON-A-STRING

(was a great night. Carlton had won the '95 flag and we'd finished near the bottom. It was a great message to the fans that good times were ahead.)

I remember Riewoldt kicking 9 goals against Melbourne back in 2002 or 2003, we lost by about 40 points.

But this young number 1 draft pick announced himself. We were hardly getting the ball down there, but this hard working athletic forward wasn't going to be beaten.

Still the most he has ever kicked, as he was played really close to goal in that game compared to the tank of a CHF he became.

When that man retires I won't know what to do with myself!
That was Round 15 2004 - I was there that day - The Saints did not have a good day, but Roo was unbelievable!

Pretty sure he kicked 5 on Alistair Nicholson, then Jared Rivers went to him & he kicked another 4.1

He kicked 9.1 out of our total score of 13.11.89

Best performance I ever saw from a Saints player was Nicky Winmar vs Melbourne in '89 at the MCG.

Plugger was out and the week before Winmar had played as a forward target and kicked ten I think. Dad and I would sometimes go to watch a certain player if we didn't have much else to do and we loved Nicky.

Well **** me did he tear the Dees a new one. Kicked nine and sat on their head about half a dozen times. Was awesome to watch for a young fella like myself.

That's crazy (or just Lockett-like). There goes any thought my memory was sound, as I had no idea he'd pretty much kicked our whole score before. Especially in a year where we were kicking cricket scores.

It was a shocking day too. I only remember this day well because it was frigidly cold, pissing down rain & I was in the standing room behind the Punt Road goals - I'd never stood their before & haven't since!

Was anyone at the match the day Plugger kicked 16 straight? If so love to hear your recollection of that day.

Nah, we were on that night.

Heater's 7 goals straight in slushy conditions didn't hurt (although Burke & Cook's gang-tackle on McKernan did).

Yep, McK was the danger man. Only thing Cook ever did for us.

George Young's bag of 5 in the elim final wasn't too shabby either.

Anything with Lockett playing for us.

If you want to talk big games then...

Banger in 05 as mentioned.

Lenny and BJ in GF1.

From a team perspective, round 22 v Carlton in 1978 is one that is etched into my memory. Moorabbin was packed to the rafters and beyond. Maaaad dog!

That was his first year at Sydney (against the Roys who finished on the bottom with 2 wins).

His stretch of games late in 1991 was as good as any I've seen.

13 goals in a bog at Waverley Park, followed by 10.6, 11.1 and 9.5 (in a thrilling final against the Cats).

Non-saints, but I did go with Richmond supporters to a game - only to see Dunstall kick 17 goals against them!

Plugger's late start to 1991 was absolutely ridiculous.... He didn't play until round 7 but,

Rd 7 v Adelaide - 12.6
Rd 8 v Brisbane - 10.3
Rd 9 v Sydney - 12.2

He'd kicked 34.11 in his first 3 weeks, then finished the year with 43.15 over our last 4 games of that 1991 season (as you've said above)

Effectively, he kicked 77.26 in 7 games during 1991....... WTF?!?!?! Ridiculous! :)

Season total of 127.51 from 17 games..... Geez with those stats, if he'd played those first 6 games from Rounds 1 to 6, he'd have been on the money to surpass the great 150!

Always remember big Stewie Loewe in the 97' Qualifying final V Brisbane.
When Spider's collar bone broke Buckets stood up in the ruck big time.
19 kicks
3 goals
19 hit outs ( against Matthew Clarkes 10)
Big game from a big man.

Always remember my dad talking about one of his favourite players George Young playing a game against Collingwood, I was there but to young to remember much of it.

I was sitting on the wing for that game. Roo would have kicked 15 that day if the chopping the arm rule existed. There were numerous occasions where Rivers went up and just crunched Roo's arms.

The early 90s Collingwood v St SKilda clashes were epics.

Don't tell me footy wasn't better back then, two old school clubs going head to toe at each other with umpires taking a back seat.

Sure we had stars like Lockett, Winmar, Harvey, Burke and Loewe back then.

It was the Ralphsmiths, Bowies, Griegs and Pekins that were the real stars.

Craig Devonport went alright back then after a shakedown from Sheldon.

.

Where did all our fans go? We had a mountain of fans back then.

Watters was right, we're a juggernaut waiting to happen.

Spida Everitt kicking 6 goals at full forward in this game,

Spida was a matchwinner, amazing skills for a guy his height.

For some reason we got seats behind the goals right in the middle of the West Coast cheersquad that day, notmally Saints supporters get seats down the orher end.

So I was pretty unpopular from the get go sitting there in my Saints gear in the middle of the West Coast cheersquad and even more unpopular after we won with that controversial free kick.

Nearly lost my scarf waving it in the face pf West Coast supporters that had been giving it to me all day. At no stage did we really look like winning this game, we absolutely stole it with about 5 goals in the last 10 mins.

Aussie Jones kicked a blinder from about 50 metres out after a sizzling run down the wing to kickstart our comeback in the last quarter and all of a sudden it was game on.

The Saints song was sung long and hard that night at the Subi Hotel, a win for the ages.

Those epic games against Collingwood back in the early 90s were a big factor in me choosing to support St Kilda.

I was in high school back in Perth then and didn't like West Coast so needed to find another AFL team to support. Lockett was also a big factor as he was my favourite player but we had other terrific players back then too like Harvey, Burke, Winmar, Loewe, Frawley, Grant, Dwyer etc.

We played a really tough gutsy brand of footy under Ken Sheldon back then too, band of brothers stuff, pretty harsh that Kenny got the sack I thought. Same can be said for Alves who was another firebrand as a coach that had us playing great footy and then got the chop prematurely. That's St Kilda for you though.

It's pretty bizarre that that era was a world away from then professional era of today. When Spider was at the Saints he used to be up at the crack of dawn on weekdays collecting our garbage in Elwood. He ran along behind the truck emptying bins by lifting and tipping. You would turn up at Moorabin and Bazza was rocking up in a HR Holden with a huge bonnet scoop the players would have a chat with you before ambling in to train.

He was a bloody legend Spida, he took over from Plugger as my favourite Saints player after he left.

That 1998 game at Subi I posted earlier he gave me a wink and a thumbs up when he kicked that point that got paid a goal, we both knew he'd got away with one . I'd been barracking for him all day and sledging the hell out of his opponents like Ryan Turnball and Ash McIntosh which he appreciated.

He was one of the last old school characters of football, a genuine rockstar.

He was a seriously talented footballer too, I also saw a game later that year at the WACA against Freo where he roved his own ruck tap then spun and sidestepped around a couple of Freo players before drilling a goal from the 50m line.

I don't think I've seen a better ruckman/forward when he was at his peak in 97/98, his broken collarbone in 97 probably cost us a flag.

We went up to Sydney in about 2008 or so and we beat the crap out of the Swans by about 100 points. We got to go to the after game function because a mate was friends with one of the TV producers. Spida spent about half an hour hanging out chatting and drinking, Sziller went pretty hard on the beers too. Those days warm downs were drinking heavily followed by an interstate flight home. Scientific stuff.

Sorry for the intrusion. I came across to your board to see what you guys thought about your new coach but found this thread instead. Seen the Saints a fair bit over the years due to my sister being a Saints supporter and always liked them except when they play the Tigers and despite the fact that you've owned us for the best part of 10 years.

I remember vividly the Saints coming to my home town (in South Gippsland) to play Fitzroy in a practice match in around 1986-87. I was about 10 and I reckon I got every players autograph that day as well as some people that probably didn't even play for either team.

Anyway, Plugger kicked 9 goals to 3/4 time that day and spent the last quarter in the ruck. Seeing him play on the same ground I played a lot of my footy on was awe inspiring. To this day, he's my favourite non-Richmond player and in my top 5 of all time.

Possibly his best work was his ad for Logan's farm corn though seeing he broke every Saints supporters heart. I was pretty young when he went and it was my first real footy heart break after seeing plenty leave before him but he was St Kilda at the time.

Sziller always seemed like a good old fashioned booze drinking footballer.

We got on the booze with some of the Melbourne players at a nightclub here back in the 90s and Todd Viney was an absolute legend that was happy to talk footy and drink with us while Garry Lyon was a pretentious w***** that ignored us, Even Viney said he was a w*****.

Lyon used to live across the road from my mate... hairy prick stole our footy when we kicked it over his fence!

As for great performances in a Saints guernsey; I dragged a boat race team to the title, drinking as the second-last bloke AND anchor as we were a man short, whilst wearing a Saints guernsey. That count? By the end I certainly couldn't...
