Talk that Bailey is gone and probably good as he was out of his depth

Yeah better to move on quickly from him. Was out of his depth, even in the field he looked like he was struggling. The catch off Pieterson he almost managed to drop it. Was only really suited to play a one day type of innings not a long 'test match' innings.

Oh we'll didn't work out for him. He has a test world record to brag about.

Root out?

The first bit of significant news is that Joe Root appears to have lost his place in the England side in favour of Gary Ballance, which means Michael Carberry gets another chance. I'll confirm all the teams news as soon as we get it, but Boyd Rankin is also set for his debut while Scott Borthwick is expected to play - the first time since Nagpur 2006 that England will have fielded three debutants (back then it was Cook, Panesar and Blackwell). And, in fact, caps have just been presented on the SCG outfield to Ballance, Borthwick and Rankin.

England really had no other choice than to make changes. The series is lost and the humiliation nearly over. The very least it will do is get games into some new blood.

England have just dropped their best batting prospect since Alistair Cook, after throwing him to the wolves while batting at 3 and averaging only three runs less than the "protected" Ian Bell.

I understand them wanting to bring in Ballance (who should be playing for Zimbabwe, but that is another topic), but Root should NOT be the man to go.

Geez, there would be a few English batsmen taking a good look at themselves if Root has been dropped. He's far from their worst performed batsman this summer.

He was very good at number 6. Fair dinkum Bell should have moved to 3 but he was too 'gutless' and now Root has been shafted

Then drop the 31 year old opener!

Cook finally wins a toss - and bowls.

Root is officially out!

Rankin for Bresnan.

Borthwick in for the injured Panesar.

Balance in for Root.

Harsh on Root but it is not the worse thing for them to freshen up a bit. Australia unchanged. Bailey is interesting, take out the pre declaration hits 34 and 39* he has had 4 innings for a 50 2 under 10s and a duck (debatable decision imo). Pretty obvious the selectors have cashed the chips on Bailey. A ton or significant 50 or it is red line time.
