Contracts don't mean a hell of a lot these days; if there was someone out there we wanted to get, we should've gone and got them.
Would need to offer longer than a seasons contract to head hunt a replacement from another club and not a good look on our part.

How is it a bad look?

We know the reality of the situation, it isn't insulting Bailey to insure we get the best replacement possible for him, whiles he's not available.

And seeing as we are entering the season proper in a matter of weeks, where all available dudes are otherwise occupied, where do you suggest we get this best replacement possible from?

It was several months ago that the club became aware of Bailey's health issue.

And we had a head start. Could we start with the coach we got to stand in during Bailey's 16 game ban who was so successful? What's he up to?

Do we actually need to replace Bailey

To me these Director of Coaching roles are a more of a fab and a nothing position with many of these roles like Bailey and Eades roles were created to support rookie coaches.

Successful organisations are driven by the right people in the right roles with strong Accountabilities, with this in mind the perpetration and game day Accountabilities sits solely with the head coach and his assistants and if this team is strong enough with the right level of skills, knowledge and experience then the Bailey position becomes redundant

Coaches like Clarkson and Lyon don't have Bailey and Eade type of roles in their structure and for me I would rather not replace Bailey and have Sando stand up on his own two feet.

Replacing Bailey is like saying Sando still needs training wheels. Time for Sando to stand upon his own right

What would we do with bailey when he comes back though?

Not my decision

All I'm saying that I can understand these types of roles when a club hires a rookie coach but the role should become redundant once the coach has got some experience under his belt

The fact that we have signed Sando to a contract extension indicates the clubs confidence in him as a coach so in my view Bailey role isn't critical moving forward

Back to your question if Dean does come back and after this scare I do believe that both Dean and club should consider a different role within the club that gives him greater work life balance

So we can save ourselves two positions and two salaries.
Don't need Bailey's role at all and don't need Noble's role either as we can afford for him to give it up to fill in for Bailey.

IMO certainly one position, Noble is still required as List Manager

And he is STILL doing his job as list manager. It's just while we wait until we see how Dean is going, a few people are doing over and above what they were doing before hand.

Based on what?

It's usual practice for existing staff to cover where there is a short term shortage.

It's unusual for an organisation to always have all staff available all the time.

Some posters don't appear to have worked in the real world & are living in some nirvana

An entire season isn't short term though. 6 months in business *might* be short term! but it's not in footy; it's potentially a year down the drain.

What senior afl strategy coaches are available?'

Who cares, we're a rich club, find the one we want, make him an offer he can't refuse and pay out his current contract...

We are still a rich club... Aren't we?

No we are no longer a rich club.
