Age is relative. Just look at Harvey and Fletcher. Some people slow at 30, others slow at 35. I think if Moloney was gone, we could look at him. Would get a year maybe 2 from him, and that would be enough. He would bring some different experiences for our young guys which could be good for their development.

Also if Ash and Stakes were moved on.

I know it's only a number, but Moloney is almost exactly 3 years younger than Ryan O'Keefe.
Yep but I wonder who is more likely to contribute for another year?

My thought process is around the midfield mix and age profile. A big bodied, mature midfielder is good on both fronts.

True, both you could argue could be in best 22 when fit, and I think ROK could slot into either role, rotating into the midfield.

Haven't heard anyone mention Brad Sewell's name??
Seemingly in the outer with hawks injecting youth into their lineup, brings leadership from a winning culture and fairly sure a few years younger than ROK... A proven contested ball winner and if he could get his body right he may have a few seasons left

Haven't heard anyone mention Brad Sewell's name??

Would love Sewell at the Lions,

Type of player that would give 110%.

Younger, better and at least as driven as ROK.

I'm a huge fan:thumbsu:

Injuries would be a huge concern.

Can't imagine we'd be intersted in rok or Sewell even if Beamer, stakes and McGrath all retire.

Also can't imagine either interested in us. As someone said rok to a contending team looking for a 30 goal a year player (freo to replace Sylvia!) and Sewell to a team needing a bit of grunt in the middle (north maybe to deal with their consistency issues?)

If contenders falls through more likely to be interested in Melbourne based teams with 10 available options. Eg Melbourne replacing Shannon Byrnes 'winning culture' spot on the list, saints replacing Hayes midfield general,

Probably the wrong thread, and just throwing it out there. Would people trade Merrett and our first pick to GWS for pick2? Assuming Melbourne beat GWS in round 21. Now I like Daniel so don't get me wrong it just seems though we have what we need defensively now and he really is struggling as a forward. Interested in people's thoughts.

No, we are creating a culture here.

It was tattered when we shopped around Riska and Bradshaw then brought in Fevola.

Don't need to show the rest of the crop that if you stay for your whole career and remain loyal, we'll trade you up.

Wisdom of trading Merrett aside, I don't see them being hugely interested in him. GWS has been pretty consistent in trading for younger players and signing older players as delisted free agents. Shaw and Mumford were both stars and both are only 28, whereas Merrett is 29 and coming off a pretty average year.

People really do have poor memory. Not long ago, he was one of the competition's best fullbacks, and now that he's in a lean patch of form, suddenly he's up for trade?

I know he loves the club but I could see Merrett going for a move to GWS. If they signed him to play fullback every week, he might find that attractive. Plus he seems like the kind of guy who might be up for the experience of living in the big smoke.

I don't think GWS will give up much of value for him though.

No way.... I'll admitt that his form up forward isn't red hot and his silly aggressive incidents don't look good.... but he is a tough hard bodied 105kg beast who bleeds Maroon, blue and gold.
He crashes packs and hurts the opposition where our young guys can't yet.
I love him... keep him.

Nup.

Have to agree re: trading Merrett or Berger. We just don't have the luxury some clubs do in offering guys up for trade. Keeping guys here is hard enough already without having players on the list feeling vulnerable.

We will have to continue to work hard in the draft and offer picks if we want to secure mature age players.

He's got two years left on his contract so either us or GWS would have to bring up to the option and considering the loyalty he's shown I can't see us doing that especially if it didn't seem like GWS weren't prepared to give up anything of value. I'd personally rather he stay. Woefully out of form but I'd back him to turn it around next year. When he's up and running he makes us a much better side. He seems to be a man without a position at the moment. No space in our well functioning defense and not really having an impact up forward. Could we use him as a Lachie Hansen style swingman?

Merrett will never be traded.
Then just delist him.

Leuenburger? Martin is in AA form at the moment and is known to perform better as #1 ruck than playing elsewhere and being back-up. We have West who was playing well before going down injured. Sam Michael should be upgraded from the Rookie list and the end of the season, not sure where Patrick Wearden is at though. As good as he is, he is injury prone and we don't get close to a full season out of him. So if someone came asking what do people think he is worth? The other question is who out there needs a #1 ruckman?

Then just delist him.

*snip*

Really? Delist a big, experienced, former AA, well-loved single club player?

Sorry if you were being facetious and I misunderstood, but while the criticisms of Merrett's recent form are fair enough, I can't possibly see an argument to delist him.

Then just delist him.

Heh should've delisted Martin last year then. And Bewick. And Maguire. Definitely makes list management easier if we discard any previous form.
