Me too. Looks like many kids with all the tools but is missing the mental attributes required to succeed at higher level sport. Maybe he had it too easy as a kid. But, it is time to move him on.

In one of my weird thought moment - I see a place for Smith at Sydney. Now stop laughing and hear me out.

He will come cheap, picks and $. With COLA gone/going and their recent signings Sydney may be looking for a cheaper option.
It appears as if Malceski may be off, Shaw is retiring and LRT has announced retirement - Sydney will be looking for defenders.
Sydney have the 'culture' to turn players around - they may think they can do the same for Smith.

Maybe a Smith for Lockyer?
Is Lockyer doing alright in the NEAFL? What is he showing that we would want him instead of taking a pick for Smith and then possibly RD Lockyer if he gets delisted?

Only way to trade a spud is if you're ok with taking a spud back. Lets just cut Smith, Brennan and players of that level. Do not want Lockyer, he's had 3 years on the list and hasn't been able to crack a game. He's not all of a sudden going to bloom into someone that should be in a top 4 team.

Josh Kennedy from Sydney was a fringe player at the Hawks before blooming at the Swans.

There is gems out there, finding them is the trick.

Agree Smith and Brennan have been given ample time to make a career out of footy plus I'd be willing to throw McInnes out too .

No - you cant eliminate every poor kick as there might not be many left. The answer is selecting/drafting good kicks & utilizing them. Hawthorn as a playing group arent much better than WC in ball winning or even perhaps decision making, what they do better is in having a greater number of options who can execute the skills to their advantage. All teams - even successful ones have players who regularly scrub the ball - but they know their place is not as the mailman as they have better kicking options around them
So its all about ratios

Amen Bondy!!! Testify!!!

Interesting you say Simpson realises we need better kicks... please please please.

Not really, he was easily good enough to be in their team, they just couldn't find a place for him.

I'd say that situation applies to Tom Mitchell more then Lockyer

bit harsh on Lockyer. So he wasn't able to crack in a team that was in premiership mode that keeps buying instant players which pushes everyone else back down the list a bit. As Kane pointed out, there was no room for JPK at Hawthorn during a similar time.

But if you knew what he could do there would have been a place. They didn't use him properly and his position in the team felt forced because of his name.

As others have said JPK averaged 20 touches a game in 10 games as a 21 year old. Very different to Lockyer. Hawks couldn't promise him the game time he needed/wanted, so Swans snuck in.

Lockyer can come as a rookie listed player to us, someone who is 21 who hasn't cracked a game doesn't deserve a full list spot unless they are a massive key position players who's been developing into his body.

Isn't Mitchell contracted (and on half a million) for another year though? Unfortunately not a overly realistic option.

Yeah, i'm not even saying we should go for Mitchell. Just the fact that he's good enough to be in their 22.

Following Hawthorn model is harder than it looks. Richmond tried that early in year and look what happened to them. U have to have all pieces in place.

If Wce is to be like hawthorn, it involves a lot of years in doldrums and a lot of luck with players we draft. High skill+can play=high draft pick typically. Rest is really hope that one or other can improve.

In saying that we only need 2-3 good additions by foot to make us a really good team. I wouldn't exactly say players like Spangher are good kicks for hawks. Good kickers open up other teams allowing other players to not be under pressure when kicking the ball.

We also get overrun by shear number of midfield options good teams have. We play too talk in forward line and adding a good small forward will again dramatically change way we play.

Whilst I understand that better kicks generally mean higher picks its not always the case. Birchall was a 1st round choice for example but Suckling went very late. Of those missing from WC's best 22 on Sat, you can argue 4 - LeCras, Ellis, Wellingham & Sheppard (maybe debateable whether he's best 22), are all elite or close to elite kicks, Yeo is generally acceptable whilst Selwood is actually better than many give him credit for, but he's not elite and will never get there. So simply adding those 6 will improve WC's capacity to hurt teams, particularly if its at the expense of players like McGinnity et al.

I'm in your court about the number of good kicking additions required for WC to make a serious move up the ladder and I believe it can be done in 1 draft if done creatively.

2010 draft really looking the goods with Gaff, Darling, Lycett and Mcgovern all best 22 and showing a lot.

Amazing talent. Our next Premiership will be built around them.

Who will end up the best player? Who has the highest ceiling?

He's better than Roughhead as a backman. Not as good up forward but hasn't had the longest run up there.

Number 2 in contested marks this season. The big man is the complete package. When he leans up a bit then he will be our best player.

Edit: sorry equal top in contested marks.
