Review Winners and Losers in the Draft

That sounds about right.

No I don't but I still have vivid memories of 2008 and the disaster that was Hill over Rich and Ballantyne at 21 from a Freo perspective. Even Fyfe caused a bit of head scratching the following year.

It's probably easy for me to say that though because I never really immerse myself in the draft enough to get too disappointed in who we draft, most players have pretty sweet highlights vids.

I usually consider the team that had the most top 20 picks to be the winner on the day and that's the typical pleb opinion.

My favourite quote from the draft as it was unfolding was someone posting, "Please make Freo stop lol" or similar because quite a few thought we were off the pace.

Without a doubt, the winner was [My Team]. [Player X] was a steal at [middling draft pick], given he was tipped to go at [marginally higher draft pick]. Nearly creamed myself when his name was read out! As for the rest, [Player Y] is a little bit raw but as a big bloke will come good with time. And as for [Player Z], he has all the goods and looks certain to be a 200 game player with this club. This draft should really set us up nicely for a premiership tilt in [201x].

As for the losers, would definitely have to be [Rival Team]. Taking [Player I'd never heard of before today] was a big risk, and I can't believe they overlooked [2nd Player I'd never heard of before today]. You'd think they would have learnt their lesson after drafting [one of hundreds of players who never made the grade from previous drafts] in [200x]! Oh well, thanks for [Player who'll be delisted in 3 years] you spuds! :D

Given how shit the Dee's have been for the last decade, I feel for the guys picked by them. That's not saying the Dee's can't turn it around, but if I was Petracca I'd be thinking, just two years and then I can get traded.
I feel for the guys drafted by Geelong. Based on recent history they are likely to be busts. Selwood and Mitch Duncan are holding together a midfield. Hawkins has a dodgy back and is the only reliable forward and you have to be over 30 to get a game in that backline. Plus you'll be playing with Rhys Stanley for years. The positive news is you get to hang out with Mitch Clark if you like photos and you'll always beat Sam Blease home in the running.

Well that was easy enough.

Melbourne, St Kilda, West Coast, Gold Coast drafted well, but I honestly don't think any club would be disappointed with their picks.

I really rate Webb, but I wouldn't have chosen the guys at the Dogs picks. Carltons picks are questionable.

Essendon & Collingwood would be very happy too..

Freo as strange one, seems they have taken a James Aish type risk with Lachie Weller, hard to predict a trade hours after he is drafted but for a bloke who wanted to be close to Mav, he couldn't be further away!

Ross Lyon wouldve known the Weller family very well

Lyon backs him and his support crew in to make a climate that anyone likes being around and this is the case again. He really couldnt care less about 'Go home factors'.

Would be amazing if Weller comes to the Saints

Clearly Collingwood! But seriously anyone else find it strange Balme right in the thick of it for Cats and next Monday he'll be at Collingwood?

That is in 2 Monday’s as there still the Rookie Draft Next Week he has to help on

seems like West Coast did really well. Duggan, Lamb, Cavka and Nelson. Absolutely hated being one pick after them, i knew they were gonna steal Duggan!!

Geelong stole Cockatoo. Its the nature of the draft.

Only real question mark was Carlton taking Boekhorst at #19. Surely wouldve been there at #28?
I'd have a special category for Carlton, in very very risky. A mature age wingman, followed by an elite kicker who has deficiencies, followed by Clem Smith then a late pick up key forward. Boom or bust.
Ahern for Jaksch, Whiley and Boekhorst doesn't look a bust. Likes of Christian Petracca, Angus Brayshaw, Jake Lever, Boekhorst and Peter Wright all had tests in the last week or so. Guess they must have been rated.

Armfield has played at least 100 games in spite of his lack of footy smarts and skill. Boekhorst has more tricks. Age isn't a concern. He's younger than Bradley, McKay and Sticks when they started out.

Would gladly welcome two runners who can kick. We need these types.

Every player drafted after a certain point has deficiencies. LOL.

Smith fills a need. We have a good record with developing indigenous kids. Will go harder than Jeffy who was traded for this pick. Fans might embrace him for his Robinson type attack on the ball.

Foster is worth a look late.

Reasonably happy with our picks. Addressed a desperate need for a KPD with Lever and added some extra height with Dear and McGovern along with an attacking half back who I have a feeling might end up being a Jaensch 2.0 because he has elite disposal and rebounds well.

I expect speed will be heavily focused on in the rookie draft.

Well that's the price you pay for that valuable finals experience you had last year! (sorry couldn't help it). But yes I think they did well. Tigers as well. Ellis v Duggan, wouldn't worry much either way. Finding a gun 18 year old late in the draft is Richmond's real problem. Keep knocking out solid first rounders but unless careers go for 22 years you wont finish the team! This year you at least braved it and took a few running types, I'm keen to see them play.

The Demons got an A+ for this Draft. The three best inside midfielders, plus a lively outside type and Oscar McDonald as a KPD prospect was a steal late to just cap it off.

Apparently Brady Grey is from the same junior club in Tassie so that should help a bit, Alex Pearce is also a Taswegian.

Even after losing Frawley? Just because Roos plays an ultra defensive place meaning you guys don't get blasted by 200 points?

Your last 8 years are horrible for a reason.
Very, very simple reasoning to blame the backs when they watch the ball sail overhead. We had the worst midfield era ever. Our backs over the last 4 or so years are better than most.

My favourite drafts in no particular order were Essendon, Freo, Saints and Richmond.

I think North could've done a little better. But not as annoyed about it now as I was. What's done is done.

Too early to tell but you would have to be drunk to not do well for St Kilda or Melbourne this year in a deep draft.

The sides I thought did really well

1. My old side Essendon did well, Langford who could be anything and Laverde who I can't believe lasted till pick 20.
2. West Coast, adressed their weaknesses.
3. Richmond- Ellis is a solid pick, more impressed with the other picks.

Well if you had pulled another Ninthmond then you would have had him.

Winners:
Adelaide- if they knew lever was going to slip well done, I like the selection of wigg aswell good ball user
Essendon- Laverde at 20 screams steal
Fremantle- picked up kids I rated highly
Geelong- does it again - wouldn't be surprised if all the players they picked make it
Hawthorn - Picking up miles and pittonet consecutively is a steal
Melbourne- Ripping midfield depth now so jealous McDonald didn't slip a couple picks more
North- Vickers willis at 36
Richmond- Biggest winner of the bunch, geelong close second and saint Kilda third west coast fourth. Good disposer of the footy in ellis, genuine steal at 33 with Menadue, athletic freak at 52 with drummond, x factor in butler and could be a westhoff type pick at 77 with McKenzie
St Kilda- good picks in lonie and McKenzie, filled both kp ends with mccartin and goddard - going to be strange hearing that name at the saints again
West coast- elite ball user off half back, questionable pick in lamb might want to go home in a few years, solid vlaustin type in nelson and an outside ball magnet in cavka. Like geelong wouldn't be surprised if all their players make it

I won't make a loser part because that's unfair and its only been 3 hours so ill give it a bit of time. This will be more questionable/on the fence draft choices:

Doggies: No big bodied Mid, a hff Elliot type in mclean, inconsistency but chance to be a star in webb (I believe taken way too early) and skinny types in Hamilton and bailey. Daniel could be anything but the record they had with hooper questionable.

Brisbane: Yeah solid picks McGrath is the main one that has the possibility of being a genuine star but the others just say solid players - didn't help they started so late

Carlton: Someone must of had a massive hardon for boekhorst to take him at 19 ahead of laverde. if he turns out to be a star than ill accept that im wrong but pick 19 for a 21 year old is questionable, also lol it says he is 44 on the draft machine. Good choices in viojo rainbow and smith, they get elite ball use and bit of mongrel respectively just pick 19 throwing me off

Collingwood: Pick 30 and 48 scream solid players but not stars to me. De goey looms as a good pick though

Gold Coast: Another tall; ruck/fwd in wright is that really what they needed? With smith, hall, gorringe, Dixon etc etc might of not been the most sensible pick. Also with garlett; bennell and martin and also with miller prestia? They picked up very similar players to what they have already

GWS: On the fence because of the number of high picks they had only time will tell if this was a success

Swans: in reality only had 1 pick in rose which is ok I guess

Port: A lot of talls the only one I rate out of the bunch was Frampton, 3 developmental talls all on the senior list is questionable aswell as no sa boys
