If he couldn't cement a spot with us, then I'm not sure who he'll replace in Eagles' line-up given you guys are well ahead of us.

If he does end up a regular though, prepare for rage and frustration like you've never felt before.

Some of us would like to think of ourselves above Carlton but i'm inclined to believe you did the best and right think by Lucas in terms of his development and injury management.

If Malthouse didn't want him i don't know why we would.

I ventured over to the Carlton board, but couldn't find the 10,000 post thread on "how much longer can Kane Lucas be played".

Which is weird, cos most of their threads are that long. :)

They are frequent posters, the blues fans.

I think a lot of Carlton fans had high hopes for him- his 2010 season was very promising, just couldn't get a clear run at it, be it form or injury. Seems like he is a confidence player as well, so probably didn't react so well to being the whipping boy at the club.

He gets a 2nd chance with a clean slate. Our other two rookies taken this year are project players, with Newman an unknown entity for next year. Taking a guy who has AFL experience isn't the worst idea for a backup.

His disposal isn't the worst, and is actually pretty decent overhead mark as well. Started already at the club today as soon as he was drafted, so can't fault him thus far.

What do you think his major rage makers are? Work ethic, decision making or disposal? I love McGinnity, but surely his disposal would be better than his?
Thoughts pls KB? Thanks :)

If I were Kane Lucas I'd be following Matt Rosa around and asking him a lot of questions.
Matt was once in pretty much the same position - decent athlete but unreliable footskills and a reputation for being soft.
Now he's one of the toughest in the team, a usually reliable kick and a quality contributor overall.

That's about Lucas's ceiling, and if he reaches it he's more than worth the pick.

swannies is your man. Have a search through his posts on boekhurst to get a fair opinion
A harsh opinion, because I know I'm harsher on Boeky than others. Have PMd smashbox.

The primary source of frustration is that by-the-numbers, Kane Lucas should be a very good AFL player. He's a good size, above average for speed and endurance, his skill execution and technique is very sound, he runs to space well. So why doesn't he make the grade?

On game day, it's his decision making that generally causes me to yell at the TV like a lunatic, and in turn prompt my girlfriend to look at me like I'm the one at fault.
With ball in hand, he has two problems: His decision making under no pressure isn't very good, and his decision making under pressure is considerably worse. And the first problem often triggers the second. Lucas' primary skill is getting the ball, then going full "deer in headlights" along the wing until he runs out of room and turns it over.
The other issue is his lack of hardness, particularly when it comes to tackling. It was noted before he was drafted that he doesn't commit to tackles, and has a tendency to just throw his arms out, avoid any real contact, and hope the tackle sticks. SPOILERS AHEAD: They never stick.
And finally, the third reason for the rage generation, is that underneath the bad decisions, softness, and shattered confidence, there is an AFL-quality footballer there. In physical terms at least. His first season showed that he can play football. If you guys can make him step up and correct the issues between his ears then your development staff will be due a generous amount of praise.

Great response.

Decision making under pressure is not something our mids have been very good at in recent years, so I wouldn't have banked on our former coaching staff fixing this issue.

But it appears to be a priority for Simpson, so I guess he will be working on it as much as possible.

I think Simpson is getting some progress in that area though SC. in the Adelaide game this year when we were on our hot streak, I noticed Priddis was actually using evasive techniques to give the ball to someone in a better position instead of just hand balling it to the guy standing right next to him when under pressure like he has been for the past 7 years. Hopefully the coaching staff are working on our mids by putting them in game sense drills to try and improve their decision making skills under pressure. Only time will tell.

As for the topic of this thread, if McGinnity can get a contract then Lucas is a shoe-in. ;)

It's not Lucas himself which bothers me, technically he's not the worst option in the world for a rookie spot.

However, that changed as soon as we filled our list with several other midfielders in the draft this year. It's like WCE weren't smart enough to change their draft strategees after Cavka slid.

Don't mind Lucas, but i don't see a point in recruiting depth which 1. We don't really 'need anymore, and 2. Isn't good depth in the first place.

Would rather we drafted literally any other type of player apart from another midfielder. Small forward, Ruck, or KPP would have been better.

Love how much draftees talk shit when they're drafted. Kane Lucas was one that said he didn't support a team, he supported the AFL but wanted to play for Carlton or Essendon.

Today he's like 'I've always been an Eagles fan'.

Same with Blakey when pre-draft he said he was a die hard eagles fan then after interviewed said he was an Eagles fan but didn't go for them as much over the last few years lol.

Current proven AFL midfielders on our list
- Priddis
- Rosa
- Selwood
- Masten
- Wellingham
- Ellis (generously calling him a mid, when really a half back flanker/injured)
- Shuey
- Gaff
- Yeo
- Hutchings

Then a range of players who can rotate for periods including Lecras, McGinnity, Sheppard, Cripps

That is not a deep midfield at the moment, adding Lucas was necessary, while we wait to see if the Sheed, Newman, and the rookies can step up.

That's because they're all shit boring robots conditioned from a young age to pop out stock standard responses. It was one of the reasons Glenn Manton was so interesting on TFS. Rarely did he give an expected answer.

I said before the draft that we should fill every available spot on our list with potential midfielders and I think we've done that, with the exception of the Sinclair elevation, which I feel was justified. We have a glaring weakness in the midfield and the more midfield candidates we add the greater the chance of of 2 or 3 of them becoming the A grade mids we need.. I'm underwhelmed by Lucas' selection, but I'm happy with the philosophy of adding as many mids as possible.

The question is still around whether our development team/coaches can get the job done. We've never neglected the midfield in the draft, just never developed the talent as well as we should have.

That's a fair point, but it's also retrospective. We can't form a recruiting strategy based on our previous inability to develop a certain type of player, particularly when we are talking about a component of the team as important as the midfield.

edit: that said, we did choose to spend our highest draft pick in recent times on a ruckman, rather than a mid.

Mainly we haven't given them time in the seniors to build their confidence.

Why? ... Priddis!

Whenever Priddis wasn't in the center square, we cleared and move the ball a lot better and fluidity.

We shouldn't be afraid to try different options and to blood young players in there with some support.

Collingwood is a team I admire for their development of young players - one of the best in the business.

The deal on Lucas is that he can play.
Kane has lightning reflexes, A-Grade agility and can run all day.

First problem for him was after a great start in 2010, he tore his hamstring badly and that wasn't dealt with properly.
Further to that, Kane had knee, hip and more hamstring problems in subsequent years to the point we virtually had to teach him to run again.

For such a balanced player, he lost balance but even moreso confidence.
I understand he suffered depression (I can't qualify that though) and getting away from football may not have been a bad thing for him.

Kanes tackling has always been ordinary but if...if, you can get his head in order and get him running upright again, you'll have a player on your hands.
Hope the damage isn't already done though.
