I think some older guys will miss

Joey, Fisher...they usually don't play every game.

As Hayes above posted Richo said our second match will probably be our strongest team and a fair idea of our round 1 team. I don't see how you can do that by resting Joey, Fisher etc?

They'd probably rest NAB 3 or something doubt they'll miss NAB 2. But who knows

OUT: Billings, Curren, Lee and Longer

IN: Dunstan, Markworth, Sinclair and Pierce.

Give Hickey a bit longer, Billings needs to go out, Curren needs to do more, Lee simply because I liked the effort of Membrey, McCartin, Bruce more and think Markworth will be a livewire up there with those other guys but could also have a stint on the wing. Pierce deserves a run, done well the past 12 months and Sinclair deserves a run while it's still NAB and rookies can have a crack.

After our scrappy but spirited showing against Brisbane I'm really looking forward to seeing us (hopefully) belt the bombers and their rag tag team of top ups. We saw some good signs from the likes of McCartin, Lonie, Membrey, Templeton and Holmes as well as strong showings from Geary, Fisher and Dempster. Hopefully NAB 2 can provide some more highlights from kids as well as a good, injury-free run for the senior players. Obviously Billings will miss and I'd expect there will be a few more changes to the side.

I believe this is the current list of unavailable players:

Siposs (mid year)
Gilbert (indefinite)
Murdoch (indefinite)
Webster (4 weeks)
Billings (2-4 weeks)
Markworth (test)
Simpkin (test)
Hickey (test)
Dunstan (test)
Riewoldt (personal leave)

Frankly I don't see the point in rushing back any of the players listed as 'test', at this stage of our development we'd be much better off being overly cautious with injuries to kids so we don't end up with X.Clarke/Maguire/Kosi/Ball scenarios of their bodies being shot by age 23. Dunstan and Hickey should both slot in the following week.

So my understanding is that these guys are available but not selected for NAB 1 (though some could be injured but not listed on our website)

White
Wright
Goddard
Pierce
Minchington
Saunders
Schneider
McKenzie
Sinclair
Payne

My changes would be

Out: Billings, Dempster, Longer, Curren, Ray
In: Minchington, Goddard, Pierce, Wright, McKenzie

B: Fisher, Delaney, Geary
HB: Savage, Goddard, Shenton
C: Newnes, Armitage, Templeton
HF: Minchington, Lee, Membrey
F: Saad, McCartin, Lonie

Foll: Holmes, Steven, Ross
Int: Bruce, Montagna, Acres, Wright, Weller, Roberton
Sub: McKenzie, Pierce

EDIT: Whoops, scanned the forum for a thread about the Essendon game, didn't notice the one 'Saints vs Top ups'. Mods feel free to merge/delete this one

I really want to see Darren have a run. He is the guy that we should be wanting to play the position Curren is currently in. Darren IMO is far more damaging as he's a better kick, longer kick & has more natural talent than Tom. He wouldn't be playing the same role as such, but I'd be giving him a crack up around half forward

With a nod to the theory that this is our 'ramping up' game, but that it's also for no points, I agree with MSG; no rushing blokes back.

OUT: Curren, Ray, Billings.
IN: Goddard, Minchington, Saunders.

FB: Roberton ~ Delaney ~ Geary
HB: Savage ~ Fisher ~ Shenton
CR: Newnes ~ Ross ~ Templeton
HF: Minchington ~ Lee ~ Membrey
FF: Bruce ~ McCartin ~ Saad
RK: Holmes ~ Steven ~ Weller
IC: Lonie Montagna Saunders Acres Armitage Dempster
Subs: Longer Goddard

EDIT: Alternatively; drop Holmes - he's had a taste now - and see if we CAN effectively play two ruckmen. Bruce gets subbed in if its not working.

So from the above:

OUT: Holmes
IN: Pierce

FB: Roberton ~ Delaney ~ Geary
HB: Savage ~ Fisher ~ Shenton
CR: Newnes ~ Ross ~ Templeton
HF: Minchington ~ Lee ~ Membrey
FF: Pierce ~ McCartin ~ Saad
RK: Longer ~ Steven ~ Weller
IC: Lonie Montagna Saunders Acres Armitage Dempster
Subs: Bruce Goddard

So who else did lance Armstrongs favorite team end up with other than clint jones and that first batch of 5 players?

Spot on. He has serious midfield capability, and he's a better kick so he can play at least a similar/maybe better role moving more into the midfield but will sneak and kick more goals in general in the forward line.

Pretty confused as to why he hasn't been given a go yet. Tore up the VFL, had a pretty damn good AFL debut, and yet nothing. No injury report. I think he's a chance to be a long term mid for us.

Hope Simpkin makes it up for this game.

Love his endeavour, want him to take a spot.

Minch (179cm 80kg) is the same size as Joey (178cm 78kg), and he has the same pace and classy skill set.

I think people forget two things; Minch is only just 21, and Joey - while he did win a Rising Star nomination in 2003 - didn't play all that much (effective) senior footy from his debut in 2002 until he really blossomed in 2006.

30 games over 4 seasons, with only 12 games where he got 15 or more possessions, and he didn't have to deal with the bloody sub rule, nor did he have to fight his way off the Rookie List... Like Joey, Minch might just be a slow-burner.

I view Darren as Joey's natural successor, and it might be that the club does too.

What was Joeys tank like in his early days.

I would of thought Templeton would be the current joey successor.
