The Lions' current injury list is probably the longest that we've had in recent memory:

Cian Hanley (Knee) - Season
Jonathan Freeman (Ankle) - 6-8 weeks
Pearce Hanley (Hip) - Test
Trent West (Knee) - 3 weeks
Jackson Paine (Ankle) - Season
Michael Close (Knee) - Season
Dan Merrett (Hamstring) - Indefinite
Jaden McGrath (Foot) - 8-10 weeks
Matt Maguire (Concussion) - Indefinite
Brent Staker (Hamstring) - 3-4 weeks
Luke McGuane (Knee) - Indefinite
Dan McStay (Finger) - 1-2 weeks
Jack Redden (Back) - Test
Jed Adcock (Calf) - 3 weeks
James Aish (Jaw) - 4-5 weeks
Tom Rockliff (Ribs) - 4-6 weeks
Darcy Gardiner (Calf) - 1-2 weeks
Claye Beams (Knee) - TBC
Ryan Harwood (Concussion) - Test

With Daniel Rich also a likely out with hip soreness.

Perhaps not an issue for a team with depth of experience, however Brisbane are famously short on that at the moment, compounded by the fact that their small amount of experience for the most part is contained in that injury list.

It got me to thinking what the longest injury lists have been across the league over the last 20 years or so. Further to that, what has been the most devastating injury list in terms of team performance?

Didn't freo have to upgrade some rookies just to field a team in the last few rounds of one year?

Yeah they did.

Had to get an exemption. About ten years ago the Bulldogs had to get an exemption as well.

2011 - we were playing shite footy in the second half of the season because Harves had lost the plot, but in his defence the injury list didn't allow us to be competitive.

That sucks. The other thing about injuries is that it completely changes the atmosphere around the club. Training sessions are smaller and depressing when you see the talent on the sidelines. Many players are fit to play but not really match fit. There is added pressure around the place.

However, it can work to your favour if managed right. Take the pressure off the players and make it clear that it isn't about winning. You're playing the kids and we're looking for key indicators .. ect ect.

With the experienced players you traded for last year and all the games you're getting into the kids this year it could be the making of this Brisbane list. There will obviously be another high draft pick from a lowly finish and if you get a good deal for Aish the list gets more talent in. The extra depth created by the experience the kids have gotten this year will also help. It may all work towards the charge up the ladder many thought Brisbane would do this year come next, and be a better one.

Also had to play a 79 kilo 18 year old KPP who missed half the year with a brokenarm, and was dropped to the WAFL reserves at the back end of the season due to woeful form. Only to get the call up for round 22 and be playing an AFL game because freo literally had only 21 fit players, Pretty sure every emergency was no chance to play due to injury

Also with Sibasido (other rookie who was promoted so Freo didn't field someone like Pitt who wasnt able to run properly) who was going to be de-listed, played his only AFL game, Once he was de-listed the WAFL had a point allocatio system for former AFL players

He went from part-time footballer with a spot lined up for perth, to getting an AFL game and suddenly perth could't fit him under the stupid points allocation so he lost his chance to earn a bit of Dosh playing for the Perth Demons as well.

No, MY injury list is longer than your clubs.

Didn't Essendon have so many injured players at one point under Knights that they did not think they had 22 fit players left on the list?

It got very close we had to name an injured rookie listed player who'd been told he was going to be delisted as an emergency

Fremantle in 2011 is the first that comes to mind. I heard they were very close to naming a bloke, and just sitting him on the bench for the entire game.

From my club, I believe in 2005 we sent every fit player on our list to Sydney (26 blokes I think), and 3 got sick and had to withdraw (Ling and Rooke being 2, I can't remember the 3rd). That's the worst we've been hit.

I do think injury lists at the end of the year are a little misleading at times. If finals aren't on the cards, clubs are fairly likely to put a line through players who are 50/50 and send key players in for surgery a bit earlier.

The fact that Brisbane has that list at the mid-point of the season is pretty concerning.

Fremantle in 2011, Hawthorn in 2009 and Collingwood in 2014 spring to mind. My team's worst one was in 1999, no wonder we fell from 1st to 13th that year.

Add to that
James Toohey - retired due to health problems
Brad Hartman - retired because he was a lazy bastard

Round 22 against St Kilda one year. Anyone who could get into a guernsey got a gig.
