I was at the game with Harry Reems .Great game but Peel were r*ped by the umpires.
De Boer best on with his usual hard at it with plenty of tackles and grunt work.
Ballard not far behind and any body who thinks he is not AFL quality know nothing about the game.
Blakely also tough inside and quick on the handball out of congestion with the give and go.
Moller improving every week and took some nice marks.Should be a keeper.
Deluca played with a lot of pace but made some stupid errors, ditto Hughes.
Hurley was lost in defence but improved forward.Used his bulk to take a couple of marks .Gave of and kicked a goal.
Brady Grey was average and Tanner Smith was invisible.Hannath played his best game for a while.
Duffy kicked 4 goals but I can't remember him being involved at all.
Tendai improved as the game progressed and MDB and Tendai must be in the gun for a recall
Weller and Langdon very disappointing.Blakely would be the one pushing for a senior call up.
Great game but as I said ruined by truly dodgy umpiring.

Thanks heaps Salim. Who do you think will come in for Johnson?

Smith did well with the one-on-ones. Not alot disposal wise around 10 ish. But his body stood up.
Alex Pearce didn't play, week off with soreness. Good indication as cover for next week.

Thanks for this. I would have expected that Freo would have pulled him, just to ensure no injuries are had
Smith is rookie, so it would require an upgrade.. Maybe Mora but it still hasn't happened yet, so why now I guesss

Smith was very average in the one on ones and was outmarked in the goal square .Poor effort from Tanner and he is miles away from AFL quality.
Pearce was an onlooker and I asked Apeness how long before his return and he was not confident about this season although he was hoping to get back this season.

A.Pearce was never named, don't think he ever was going to play. I said it somewhere about the place, he hasn't played for 3 weeks. Would be a fairly big call to bring him back into the AFL side for such an inexperienced player. More likely Spurr in and that's it.

Having said that, glad to hear DeBoer have a great game. I think it's more likely that he'll find his way back into the seniors. Spurr comes in for MJ, maybe Sherro pulls out and they bring DeBoer in who can play that defensive fwd role quite well. Croz stays in who is also a very good attacking player allowing Mayne to play as a 'tall back'. Something like that ... maybe.

Some of my thoughts on the game today.
Firstly it was stunning day for footy, a bit of cloud cover and hardly a breath of wind. The lack of wind meant that it was possible to kick goals to the southern end of the ground where the seabreeze normally takes the ball across the goal face.
Moller caught my attention almost immediately. I thought his tap work was excellent, he's developing a good understanding with Blakely and the other mids. He also spent a lot of time up forward where he was less effective but he took a terrific textbook one-grab clunk at the top of goal square in the second qtr under strong pressure from Rodda and kicked the goal.
Blakely also made himself conspicuous by winning the very first clearance of the game and kicking into the F50. He's such a pure midfielder, he keeps his arms extended with ball in hand and you can see him assessing his options as he runs. Best on ground in my opinion.
DeBoer and Mz were both excellent, I liked DeBoers pressure around the contest and his tackling but I would take Mz's 20 possession game over DeBoer's 28 possession game every day of the week. Mz was simply more effective with his possessions and his kick inside 50 to Hurley was a beauty. Hurley dished that mark off to Duffy who kicked the goal from about 30m out.
Hurley was awful down back and cost Peel at least 3 goals, one with a poor kick across the goal face which missed the target and later he was running back with the flight and the ball went straight through his arms in an attempted chest mark. I think playing forward comes more natural to him, he kicked a goal around his body which seemed to suit his gaelic skills.
Tanner continued his Jekyll and Hyde approach to footy, although it tends to be more Hyde than Jekyll. I thought in the first half he moved Keitel under the ball quite well and so their respective stats would have been quite low but when Keitel was on the move Tanner struggled. In one ground ball contest Tanner and a WP player were running for the ball but Tanner didn't go to the goal side of the contest and the WP player very nearly got away from him. It seemed a silly thing to do in my mind.
Max had a good game, he linked up well through the midfield and was good inside F50, he snapped a good goal in the first qtr. In the 3rd qtr he had the ball just outside F50 with 2 or 3 options around him but you could almost see him trying to decide who to give it to. His mind works quickly in some situations, especially with the quick release handball over his shoulder but when he has to think about his disposal, its almost glacial.
Deluca played his best game for Peel, it would have been quite galling playing wafl reserves for a couple of weeks after playing in a premiership last year but he showed some character today and responded well.
Weller and Langdon were solid if not spectacular. In the 3rd, Weller ran 25m to contest a mark and hit his opponent solidly causing him to spill the mark. He then tackled his opponent while still on his knees and prevented him from getting away. For those who haven't seen him play, he has a reputation for his outside run but he's by no means flakey. He doesn't mind getting his hands (and knees) dirty and regularly displays good 2nd and 3rd efforts.
Hannath also had a solid game, he was very good in the ruck and presented well from FF on the rare occasion he went deep forward.
Grey had a quiet game, he effected one of his trade mark spoils going back with the flight and on 2 occasions linked up nicely with some run through the midfield. I'd like to see him leave D50 more regularly as he possesses some good speed and a decent kick.
TV was quiet in the reserves, I can't see him being on the list next year.

.Terrific write up.Pretty much how I saw it except for Weller and Langdon who I thought were ordinary.Smith lacks any sort of presence ,gets shifted out of position to easily.
Where do you watch the game from.We where the noisy trio in the members.Wear a carnation or something next game a we will buy you a beer.

Great report PR, thanks for that. ...and Ballard?

Thanks PR
Any thoughts on Marcus Adams for WP. He sounded really good today. 193cm 98kg 20 odd possies 10 marks. I guess I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there. Tanner doesn't appear to be developing as we probably need.

I like to sit in the old stand away from the "madding crowd" and have a kick with my son during the breaks. Next time I'll wear a pink carnation and a Budget under my left arm and say hello. I'm pretty sure I'll find you guys.
Did you see RTB head straight for the far wing today with his son? He spent the first 3/4s chatting to someone but I couldn't make out who. Not sure how much of the game he saw but he has the luxury of watching the video replay.

Missed Ross but Rosich was out listening to the 1/4 break huddles.

Bugger, did I miss Ballard? I like him a lot but there is a very distinct lack of noise about him from within the club. RTB likes to drop names of fringe players in his pressers but I've never heard him drop Ballard's name. Does this mean he's not up to the grade? For what it's worth I think he's a good measure better than mitchie. And that's not michie bashing, I'm just trying to give those who haven't seen him play a point of reference. Like Michie he's a talented extractor but like Mz he gets to every contest. From time to time his disposal lets him down but he was excellent by foot today with one kick into the F50 in the last qtr a clear standout.

His disposal sounds like it has improved as the season has gone on. Looking at Barlow last night you have to wonder if slower type players have a future in footy. Is he quicker than Barlow?

It's odd but I've never thought of Ballard as being slow. I don't recall him ever being caught out by a lack of speed. At a guess I would put him on par with Barlow in terms of both speed and endurance. He looked a bit "chunky" last year but has leaned down this year. What's the story in terms of his contract? Can he be rookied again next year?

As far as I know (it changes every minute) he can stay on the rookie list for a third year if both parties agree.

Ross mentioned in an interview that he keeps Hill in the midfield instead of on the half back line because we lack pace in the midfield. Ballard may be an option when Mundy retires, but that is likely to go to Blakely.

Ballard is a huge bloke.I stood next to him at one of the quarter huddles.I'm 6 foot and he dwarfed me .Perfect size for the current sized extractor and he is not slow.

My question would be can he play down back? This is where we lack depth,
and with Duff, Johnno, Elvis getting older, retirement looming, and the other
flankers lacking physically, does he have descent skills to help out?

7 goals from 7 very "iffy" free kicks in West Perth's forward line told the story.

The umpires were even laughing as they came off to a hail of abuse from the Peel members section of the stand.

And what's with the village idiot who resembles Red Foo and sits with the Fog Horn and the other West Perth supporters at every game?

Was thinking that in bed last night (how sad is that?). That would leave an opening for him for sure. I know he played there before he was drafted. His skills have improved but it is probably not his strongest point.

It's interesting isn't it. WP generally don't get a favourable go from the umps EXCEPT when they play Peel.

Peel get r*ped every week. Why is that? To the long time Peel supporters out there, is it just a recent phenomenon since they became aligned to Freo?

I would've thought that the WAFC would want the Peel FC to succeed, in fact I would've thought it'd be crucial to their long term plans and yet they allow an obvious bias to exist amongst their umpiring fraternity.

And yes, the majority of the die hard WP supporters that go to the games are an embarrassment!
