We're an easy target for lazy journalists all over Australia. People lap it up because of the go home 5.

I think that's spot on. It's too easy a story. We haven't won games this year, and the reasons/excuses for that are well documented, but that is really obscuring that we've done pretty well with recruitment and retention so far in Leppa's tenure, as Eons was getting at.

Last year we picked up some excellent players (Beams and Christensen) and Robbo who has added a substantial amount, all for different reasons, and all have seemed happy at the club. We also re-signed most of our kids, including some really promising ones who would've had options and important reasons to want out (Paparone for example). I doubt we could've done much to keep Aish, and we don't really know why Stef is choosing to leave yet (assuming its accurately reported).

I think we still face the exact same systematic retention issues that the Lions Roar focused on last year, and the tightening of academy rules is galling for that reason. Right now we're hearing a lot about players that want out because it is an easier story to write about, but if we picked up (for example) Dixon and Suckling to offset Stef and Aish leaving then it looks more like player movement is a growing phenomenon and (slightly) less like we're a feeder club.

I just realised, this weekend is also the James Aish Cup. If Carlton lose, they will arrest the #1 pre season draft pick, allowing Aish to walk away from the Lions for nothing should a reasonable trade not eventuate.

Come on Lions, play awful!!!

We can still win and win the spoon. I'd prefer we win.

With the Hawks in Launceston, Adelaide in Adelaide and The Dogs left, we may be in for a few beltings.

Exactly. Which means we may as well win this match if we are good enough.

I'd do Oxley + Pies secound rounder. I know Oxley has been somewhat inconsistent but has played 16 games this year. also seems to be the type of player we don't have - a genuine small defender/back flanker. we are trying to manufacture them in Rich/Claye Beams and others.

from an age perspective we only have 2 others players born in his year. he is the age of the guys who left the club over recent years.

one thing I interpreted from Greg Swann's comments a couple of weeks ago wrt to trading Aish was that we might choose to ignore his preferred destination. eg. if he nominated the pies and we thought Carlton was offering a much better deal we might either force through a trade to Carlton or let him go pre-season draft. Would be nothing personal against the Pies just that we can't keep accepting unders for every first round pick who wants to leave the club because it will just keep happening to us.

Oxley has played his best games as a spare defender and is a pretty reliable kick. Not the quickest though and doesnt really like a contest, which is an unfortunate trait for a defender. If the deal ends up being our second rounder (around 25?) plus Oxley I'd say thats slight unders

The issue I have with Oxley is that he plays a similar role to the one Paparone has been filling this year. Oxley is a better kick, but Paparone is more versatile and probably has more room for improvement.

Havent really watched much Lions so cant comment on Paparone but Oxley is a decent player who is good enough to be a role player type in a top 4 team. 25 is also a decent draft pick but I'm not sure decent + decent = good/very good, which is what Aish could be. Maybe the Queensland factor for Oxley makes him worth slightly more to you

Will a priority pick fix a retention problem?
No but maybe you could get your president to get our player retention allowance back seen as though he was the one who pushed so hard for it to go. Mind you I think he as enough on his plate trying organise the distruction of fremantle and west coast.

Will be at Collingwood or Carlton in 2016.

His uncle and father are very close to Neil Balme after Balme was the coach at Norwood in the 80's. His uncle believes his preference is Coll.

There is also a strong link with Aish and Stephen Trigg from Adelaide. He has told both Adelaide clubs he wants to play in Victoria.

Why does he want to leave Lions? Why a Victorian club? Thanks.

Who Aish? I don't think he really fitted in at Brisbane.

I have been told he wants to play for a big Victorian club and experience living in Melbourne as opposed to home in Adelaide. He enjoys the culture away from football and it fits in with his interests in life away from football.

I've been told he is a bit like Brodie Grundy. Is a different cat off the field and takes an interest in topics that aren't focused on football if that makes sense. Adelaide for him would be unbearable as it's a two town football city and you can't escape that bubble.

It seems like James never wanted to be here which is a shame. An error on the clubs part for drafting him but they had to back themselves in. Lets hope we can get some sort of value for our investment of a pick 7 for him.

If that is the case he must be a first class idiot to think moving to a Big Melbourne Club will mean he will be able to escape that bubble.

Adelaide is a still a big country town. Football dominates the landscape and there is little to escape that bubble.

Melbourne still has a large football focus but it's a bigger city and there are more outside interests, cultures and pursuits for someone living there.

I am sure he will enjoy walking down the street and being noticed by everyone. Sounds like that is exactly what Aish won't like but that is what he is in for.

Not sure if you have lived in Adelaide but football is number 1 there. It's like a big country town and footballers are treated like gods.

In Melbourne, it's a much bigger city and you have the ability to escape the bubble Adelaide has.

You are delusional. I don't care what Adelaide is. Aish won't be able to escape a bubble in Melbourne. You have no ability to escape the bubble in a footy state. If he doesn't want a bubble he is staying in Brisbane. He is full of shit and so are you.

I'm not sure you have ever lived in Melbourne if you are making such a comment.

James Aish is not a high profile footballer. Maybe in Adelaide, he would be given he is Aish royalty. But in Melbourne he would be barely known.

LOL LOL LOL there has been a James Aish article in the paper linking him with a Melbourne club once a week for a few seasons

If James Aish walked down the street in Melbourne, barely anyone who isn't a football nut would know who he is.

On and off the field, he is an unassuming character. That is no slight on him.

As they try to reconnect with a troubling number of disaffected fans while reconstructing internally, Carlton have significantly bolstered their membership team and are offering price reductions of up to 50 per cent on 2016 member packages.
