I find it interesting that people call Wingard a small forward, I just never think of him like that....

Up until the last couple of games he was the only player in the league averaging 20+ dsp (19.70)/2+ goals (2.55).

He's essentially prime HFF Steve Johnson.

Child Abuse Will Not Be Tolerated: McLachlan

The public response to a boy dressing himself as an umpire and going to the football has overwhelmed AFL Head Office this morning. The scene shocked the footballing community during last night's Geelong V St. Kilda's drawn game as it was revealed the boy's own father is openly enabling this to occur. Complaints have poured in to condemn the abuse of the boy who is clearly unaware of what he is doing to himself and too young to understand the consequences.

AFL boss Gil McLachlan has slammed the boy's father, booing him from his corporate box and accusing him of being "blind" and "not having any idea."

"This kind of thing is unacceptable in the modern game and must be stamped out," McLachlan told the media. "The AFL supports healthy families, not this. It won't be tolerated."

Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling was the first to expose the wrongdoing and expressed concern for the the welfare of the boy. "As an unattractive ginger growing up in a redneck town like Geelong, I know what it is like to suffer humiliation at the hands of bullies. When I saw what this kid was being put through, I had to bring it to light for the nation to witness. It's not on - someone had to do something. Who knows what might happen to this poor kid."

Child Protection Victoria has been alerted and advised members of the public that they are taking the matter very seriously. The telephone operators at the service have asked for patience getting through today because of the unprecedented number of calls.

Eddie McGuire has chimed in calling the boy a "weak little maggot" but later apologised for the comment saying it had been taken out of context.

The investigation continues with the boy's father in hiding, unavailable for comment.

wow, Eddie McGuire stoops to a new low... what scumbag piece of filth!!!

Yeah he plays tall when he's up forward and the rest of his goals come from clearances or running into the 50. He doesn't kick many crumbing goals or cheapies in the square, not many opportunities to do that in our team anyway.

Is it truly that difficult for the likes of North, Scray and Hawthorn to go some ways to getting most of their membership to the MCG/Had 10-15 days out of 365 in a year when they're considered challengers?

Sundays aren't ideal, but this should be a blockbuster for the Roos.

Yep, because that was the reason we lost to Brisbane and Carlton.

When people understand that our malaise this year has nothing to do with our forward line structure and everything to do with the lack of run with our midfield, you'll sleep better. We didn't beat Hawthorn because of playing Neade and Butcher. We beat Hawthorn because we controlled the ruck and had a group of midfielders that were prepared to run hard all game, as shown by the disposal numbers.

We played Ryder with Schulz and Westhoff for 75%-80% of most games. Ryder is a better contested mark and kick for goal than Butcher, for example. Most of our goals against the Hawks came from those small marking targets (Wingard 4, Monfries 3). Our problem isn't structure. It's the fact that we've got a midfield that couldn't perform for whatever reason, which starved the forwards of delivery and made them feel like they were responsible for winning or losing if they missed a set shot - which does happen - because they knew the ball wouldn't be down there very much. Couple that with forwards like Neade who weren't performing at the start of the year and it was a recipe for disaster.

Oh, and Adelaide are just skirting along the fringes of the 8 with a piss easy draw so I don't understand why you would put them up as being something we should aim for. Look at West Coast if you want to see a high functioning forward line:

I agree with all of that, but the way our forward entry has been most of the year, high and high and wide, a functioning 2 dimensional forward line can cover that and make it work. Ours only fires when the midfield is dominant, the rubbing slingshot is working, and we are hitting targets on the chest, be they 6'6 or 5'10.
