I don't get why people are against taking a mature c-b grade forward. We need someone to take the number 1 defender to help our youth develop. Close 'could' do that in his fourth year as a player, but the ACL injury means he'll be a year out of development. If we keep Paine, maybe we feel he can offer that but I struggle to see us putting the pressure on him after a year of injuries.

Seems highly unrealistic that Bennell would end up at the Lions. But then again Aish staying was an impossible dream and their is a tiny chance he may stay so who knows. All i would say is with the messiah Lambo back i would be more confident in picking up Harley knowing he is going to have a solid person around him.

Really is silly season at this time of the year. So much rubbish sprouted. Hard to know how genuine this claim is. Only rumour i would say that has strong substance is Tom Bell is a big chance to leave Carlton for Queensland. Whether that's us or the Suns remains to be seen.

• Swann has told Martin they are holding him to his contract and he won't be traded under any circumstances
• Martin is "ok" with this
• Club is prepared to play hard ball with any player that wants to leave and are happy to reject requests for trades.
• New contact for Mitch Robbo.

Good to see the club taking a hard line. Hopefully we can take Swann at his word and lock in Martin to stay, if so that is brilliant news. Sounds like the club are making a real effort to sort this out, great stuff.

Cause that worked out so well last year...

Coaches tell the recruiting staff what they think they want/need and should be more or less uninvolved from that point onwards. Consulted, yes, but the face of the club on trading... No.

Bennel is still worth a top 10 pick at this point, and maybe even one well inside top 10.

From watching his games, I don't think the characterization of him as an inside footballer is that true in that he rarely gets the hard ball himself. Instead he's more of a conduit from that into the spread, and more often gets his ball very outside thanks to his running ability. Probably a bit like Redden in that they seem like they should be an inside player but aren't really that effective there. Redden has better disposal, Bell has better running.

I don't quite agree. I think you've accurately described his 2015 but I think that his style has been driven by the role he is expected to play, rather than what he is capable of. When he's gone into a stoppage as a ball winner, my impression is that he is pretty successful at winning or negating the contest.

The issue for Carlton has been that they have had to fit a few "inside" types into their best 22, alongside Murphy and Gibbs. Cripps has obviously become the #1 guy in terms of that ball winning mid role. You then have Curnow who is hard bodied, has a big engine (albeit he plays a more defensive role) and isn't highly skilled. Carazzo is a bit similar, albeit probably a bit more outside. They got games into Holman who is an inside mid too.

Because of his versatility, Bell didn't really get the game time at the coalface to really show his true capability in terms of contested footy. I think he's capable of playing as a big bodied mid and would be quite successful in a similar role to what Robbo played late this year.

The question in my mind is whether Bell is a player of need with the rise of Robinson, the likely development of Robertson, the plethora of forward flankers we seem to have, and the fact that Lester is still on the list. I personally think Bell is an upgrade on Lester but I wasn't convinced the best 22 had Lester in it.

What you do get with Bell is a player who is "ready to go", can play multiple roles in the best 22 and brings a couple of really good attributes that are somewhat missing from our side (really strong body and the ability to run all day). We'd have a stronger squad with him in it, depending on what we'd have to give up.

In theory, I'd go Casboult + Bell for Aish. However, I'm sure Carlton supporters would hope for more, particularly if Aish nominates Carlton as his preferred destination.

Apparently he is currently working for a team in the finals. Given there hasn't been an announcement I'd say he could still be busy

As an aside, I thought the notion out of the club last year that we were only interested in A graders was unnecessarily limiting and poor list management. As it turned out, by picking up Robinson, it probably showed it was a throwaway line designed to make supporters feel good rather than any sort of golden rule for the club's list managers. I'm glad I haven't heard the same rhetoric this year.

Every premiership side has more "B" and "C" graders than A graders. However you classify players, no side is completely full of stars. You need role players. You need solid contributors. Salary cap dictates that you can't have the league's best players in every position.

It is ultimately about the balance of your list and the balance of your best 22. We don't have a single mature key forward on our list. If we can get a B or even C grader to play a role, then it could well help the rest of the side improve. That's a positive. And if they turn out to be a dud, we really haven't lost a lot (depending on what we give up in a trade).

Watson said he'd spoken to someone who knew Bennell, and his preference was to stay in Queensland.
