Funny how this Hartlett saga has gone from "Hartlett squeezed out of Port due to salary cap" to "5 clubs offering Hartlett $5 million over 5 years"
Both statements fail the reality test: 1) Hartlett would not be anywhere near the first player squeezed out by a tight salary cap; 2) No club would seriously offer a $700k+ per season multi-year deal to Hartlett*
*In 2014, only 20 players earned over $700k per season in the AFL. If you factor in heavily front and back loaded contracts, it's likely less players would average over $700k per year. I.e. of those 20 players earning over $700k in 2014, a few would appear there as a one off and may be on $500k on average (as an example). In addition, a few of those players would be on over inflated Godfather deals from Gold Coast, GWS and the COLAs (Scully, Tippett come to mind), further skewing these numbers. Based on this, offering Hartlett $700k+ per year on a 5 year deal would instantly make him one of the top 10-15 highest paid players in the competition and most likely the highest or at least 2nd highest paid player at a new club.
