Traded Patrick Dangerfield [traded w/ pick 50 to Geelong for 9, 28 and Gore]

Geelong is an average destination if he wants success. They'll be forced to overpay thus weakening their list moving forward. Seems like a lose-lose-lose scenario for all three parties. Oh well, he obviously wants to come home.

You understand that compensation has nothing to do with a player's ability right? If a lower club loses a quality player, they are rewarded more than if a top club loses a player, and while that may seem unfair, it does help with some equalization.
The counter argument is that it produces so-called feeder clubs.
Giving compensation will stay the same until the AFL come to their senses and scrap compensation for free agency.

I think that would be a fair trade if that's how it plays out.

Of course you do.

Pick 9's since 2005:
2005-Mitch Clark
2006-David Armitage
2007-Ben Mcevoy
2008-Jack Ziebell
2009-Andrew Moore
2010-Dion Prestia
2011-Adam Tomlinson
2012-Nick Vlastuin
2013-Christian Salem.

None even come close to being worth a direct swap with Dangerfield. This doesn't take into account that Pick 9 could actually end being Pick 11.

Someone needs to show this league how restricted free agency should work and show the rest of the footy world why free agency does not need the AFL messing with the dealings. Adelaide is in the prime position to be the club if they have the mettle.

Step 1: Match the offer knowing that the pick is most like to be a pick after their their first rounder when the AFL do their imaginary calculations. 6 years for $800k per is a perfectly reasonable salary for Danger in his prime. It might even be under market value.

Step 2: Step into trade week knowing that they have a star player on a reasonable contract and the party they want to deal with, that is holding a first rounder that is 4 picks better than their AFL compensation would be.

Step 3: Ask Geelong for their first rounder (or more). At the very least if they get Geelong's first rounder they're in front of where they would be with AFL compensation, and that's still being very conservative for Danger's actual worth.

I can't see a situation how Adelaide lose by playing the system how it's intended instead of how the AFL has artificially manipulated the mindset of the FA process by handing out free picks from HQ.

patrick dangerfield only wants geelong because apparently his gf has strong ties there. that's it. geelong is in a strong negotiating position.
He grew a Geelong supporter having lived near there with the rest of his family.

Can we keep on topic please? It's obvious to everyone, if Dangerfield wanted success he would've gone to a club with a future, not a club with an old list full of holes.

I'm a little out of the loop but the Cats aren't that old are they? Enright and Bartel come to mind. Who else?

Gotta laugh at Blues and Freo telling us all about success :p

You'd think they'd have to do this. Once they match, Geelong's best case scenario is to get him with their first rounder, and since that pick is a better pick than Adelaide could get as compensation, it seems to me that Adelaide only stand to gain by matching the offer. I'd think the best strategy would be to ask for 2 first rounders and a best 22 player and expect to do a deal somewhere in the middle.

the system is flawed...

geelong got screwed when gaz left
hawks got screwed when buddy left
crows will get screwed here if they arent careful....

all 3 deserved 2 top 10 picks in my view....but you have to take what you can get and move on....

true FA and the clubs would receive no compo at all.....so i guess its better than nothing

Hmmmm. Turns out PD going to the Cats is not a suprise, but for me, 800k a year is.

Really makes it an interesting call. If he really wanted to go to Geelong for family reasons, could they not of dodged the grandaddy offer?

Not sure a club who has just missed finals, has just moved on a lot of old stars and are clearly in a bit of a mini rebuild period for the next couple of years should be piling 800k on one player...

Good luck to them though, prefer it when the Cats are competitive, the two meetings this year were fun, but didnt quite have the clout of years gone by.

Honestly, I believe he's worth two first round compo picks like Gazza was. I understand that it's more than likely the AFC will get screwed on this deal to a certain extent and I feel for you. It's not my wish for that to happen. I hope a deal is done that satisfies both clubs.

I actually feel for Adelaide in this, as losing a genuine A grader is heartbreaking.

Geelong will probably offer up the 2 first rounders #11 and next years first + Horlin-Smith.

One thing is for certain, I wouldn't wanna be the kid who was drafted with the pick they get for Danger.... Adelaide media will ride the poor kid outta town. Will make Jack Watts and Richard Tambling look like nothing.

From what I read on foxsports is that he wants to return to Vic but I guess everyone knows Geelong are the front runners.

Also IIRC didn't Danger have a crack at Tippet when he left?
