We have been solid last 25 years.....
Exactly. The Hawks only became a destination club after they got awesome. And they got awesome through an insane group of very high draft picks. How many of those come in if the hawks didn't win in 08 and have been a top team since 10?
Their framework or core as you could say was a bunch of draftees. Hodge, Roughead, Lewis, Mitchell, Rioli, Smith, Birchall, Buddy while he was there abd a few others were all drafted by the Hawks. They then traded smartly to complement that core with players that they targetted for a specific role and that would fit their structures well. They've traded for Frawley, Lake, Hale, Gibson, Burgoyne, McEvoy, you're very own Gunston, etc, etc, etc, etc...
So no, their team is not solely built through the draft, not even close to that being true.
Similar record to Brisbane then.In 25 years 14 finals 7 GF and 3 flags. we get it done. The premiership window/clock is rubbish just because we've been up doesn't mean we can't get there again quickly. When you're drafting blokes like Enright and Gregson at pick 47 you can see we do things a bit differently.
They haven't drafted a star since Cyril in 07. Had a look through their list and considering those guys you mentioned plus the ring-ins like Burgoyne and Lake, won't be there in a couple of years, they might be in a bit of trouble soon.Their framework or core as you could say was a bunch of draftees. Hodge, Roughead, Lewis, Mitchell, Rioli, Smith, Birchall, Buddy while he was there abd a few others were all drafted by the Hawks. They then traded smartly to complement that core with players that they targetted for a specific role and that would fit their structures well.
They also traded for some of the picks that got them those draftees.Their framework or core as you could say was a bunch of draftees. Equalization is real though right? They also traded for some of those draft picks.
Lost me.Equalization is real though right?
Unrelated to the draft picks. Yes they traded for those picks, a fair while back now. My point is that they've acquired the elite talent ten years ago, and haven't really ever had to lose anyone other than Buddy over that period, whilst still adding players like Burgoyne, Gunston, Gibson, Frawley, Lake, McEvoy, Hale. Which means the draft hasn't really being able to keep the competition on a level playing field. Whatever the AFL is doing to keep as many teams in contention, isn't working.Lost me.
Anyway.....enough about the Hawks. Who reckons Danger will win our B&F tonight? I reckon he is a shoe in.
It's relevant, how do we get to that point when we trade Danger this year? Do we draft players from the two first rounder we get from the Cats or do we get guys like Bennell and Redden.Anyway.....enough about the Hawks. Who reckons Danger will win our B&F tonight? I reckon he is a shoe in.
Laird has been bloody awesome. I would definitely not be upset if he got it. Same with Betts!!Rory Laird and Eddie Betts might disagree with you.
Laird should for mine. Most consistent performer all year.
Are you mental? Every club has stories of guns they've picked up late in the draft. In 25 years 14 finals 7 GF and 3 flags. we get it done. The premiership window/clock is rubbish just because we've been up doesn't mean we can't get there again quickly. When you're drafting blokes like Enright and Gregson at pick 47 you can see we do things a bit differently.
Does anyone know what the draft is going to be like next year? It is supposedly a shallow draft this year.....if it is a good one, it may make sense to use this years pick on established and next years on a player from the draft.....It's relevant, how do we get to that point when we trade Danger this year? Do we draft players from the two first rounder we get from the Cats or do we get guys like Bennell and Redden.
I hope he doesn't win the B and F.
I reckon Laird over Danger or Betts.Anyway.....enough about the Hawks. Who reckons Danger will win our B&F tonight? I reckon he is a shoe in.
Yep the Hawks have done well and haven't been scared to trade for players.Unrelated to the draft picks. Yes they traded for those picks, a fair while back now. West AdelaideLots of other club discards that had the traits Hawthorn wanted ......great team not individuals ....which showed when Buddy leftTheir framework or core as you could say was a bunch of draftees.
