How homesick are you if you sign a two year extension? If someone was desperately homesick, that wouldn't happen. The money is the factor here. His manager messed up and now he's trying to make up for it.

I worked in London for 18 months and was loving my time there. Had just agreed to a 1 year placement at my work. 6 weeks in nephew passed away and brought what really matters home, literally.

Went home.

Who knows or cares what reasons people have for signing and then wanting to leave. The AFL and GWS or Freo or anyone would be very hypocritical to judge anyone or make demands on a player.

AFL contracts aren't worth jack and the board would just as easily get rid of a senior coach or any staff member if they saw fit.

I don't know McCarthy or his actual story but if he genuinely wants to come home for dollars, homesickness or whatever who are GWS to deny that? Seriously?

I wonder if you would say the same if it was the other way around?

Anyway what goes on here doesnt matter.
Itll be up to the Giants wether they release him. Pesky contract extension.

So do you also think he lied to Cameron and Cornes?

He signed it after he had been at the club for about 4 months, being a 19 year old at the time he may not have thought about it all the way through. That extension was almost 18 months ago now, a lot can change in 18 months. One thing that hasn't changed is his partner is still living in WA. If he's effectively signing a 4 year contract he probably thought his partner would've moved over by now.

The point is no one knows his motives, and there is enough evidence to point in either direction, definitive statements about his motives are for people trying to push an agenda.

he signed the extension in 2014 before he played a game given he was a first year draftee you would be nuts to turn it down. and the fact that fremantle has reportedly offered double his current salary he was thought to have being nailed on to go to fremantle pre draft and being an avid freo supporter its not the least bit surprising he has requested to go home

You're right of course I'd want to keep X player from leaving. The reality is we've had players leave to go home to wherever often and very rarely do we have players wanting to come to our club.

Once is all said and done however I'm mature enough to see through everything and realise a paycheck is a paycheck and homesickness is real.

Great. Get freo to put up an overs trade
And im sure the giants will change their mind, like boyd.

Oh and if he was mature he chose to play professional football in an Australian competition. He even signed a contract extension. Thats part and parcel of it. Like how i have to have a zero reading in alcohol for mine. If he doesnt like it he could quit.
Running home isnt mature. Actually going after the dollars is(tis the world we live).
As it was with Boyd, i have no problem with him going.
Have allot of problem with him going for a crap trade.
And every clubs fans would be exactly the same if it was theirs.

I don't disagree with you.

I hope we do offer overs but I think the definition of overs is what is the sticking problem. GWS posters are now going on about how he's the second coming of christ. Don't get me wrong shows plenty but he's still a very much unknown pick 14 who had half a very good year and the back half basically non-existent.

What's wrong with running home? He's what 20? Knows if he gets home he'll be surrounded with friends and family and for a club he has publicly stated he loves.

When I was 20 I went travelling around the world with my parents! 20 is still bloody young.

This is what is a massive problem with our industry. Players, young players get offered the world.

I'd imagine that's very hard to deal with as a young up and coming player.

What would you consider a fair trade?

Already stated numerous times. My thoughts havent changed.
A star player.
You dont have the picks and we have 1st rounders playing in the Magoos so fringe players are useless to us.

What players of ours do you consider stars?

Which players outside of Hill, Fyfe, Neale, Walters would you be interested in.

Add Hill to that list, I think that's the 4 that are untouchable.

Bingo. Thats why there's an issue. Giants wont trade for filler when we have a ton in the magoos and the picks you have are very late 1st rounders.
And Freo wont trade anyone of worth as they want to stay in their window and with sunshine they may have the final piece.

Should be interesting.

The fairest trade would be an equally talented 20yo key forward. Fremantle sure as hell don't have one.

The next fairest trade would involve (part-exchange, might not be a straight swap) a talented young player in another position - Neale, Weller, Pearce. You won't trade one.

The next fairest trade would involve a pick in the first half of the first round. You don't have one.

So we go further and further away from fair value and get into stuff like an end of first round pick and Clarke. Fair value is very obviously a player of equal talent and similar age to McCarthy, or an older player of equal or higher talent. It's a short list, and you just ruled out most of them.

Can you show me where anyone has talked him up that much? You have just said he was basically non existent in the second half of the year... Does that mean he kicked 35 goals in half a season in what was effectively his first season? And you call that good? How many did Pav kick? (please don't use the argument that it was because he didn't have the number 1 defender)

The fact posters are knocking back 2 first rounders for a guy who himself was a first round selection at 14.

Yeah he had an outstanding start. That's acknowledged and hence the potential and his price at where it's at. His second half was beyond poor.

Why mention Pav? It has nothing to do with the argument. I could mention Josh Hill who kicked more goals then McCarthy, is that a fair swap? Is Josh Hill a better player?

He's a 20 year old KPF who wants to come home with unlimited potential. 2 first rounders gives you 2 cracks to find 2 similar players and before you say well McCarthy is proven. Well he ain't proven jack as far as I'm concerned. Jack Anthony kicked 50 in a season as did Ben McKinley or whatever his name was from the Eagles.

He could be the next Josh Kennedy, he could be the next Scott Gumbleton.

2 first rounders is a good start for a player wanting out.

The main thing is HE DOES WANT OUT. As do many of your players currently.

The floodgates are opening, you were never going to hold onto everyone.

Many? Except for 1 or 2 they are all fringe and are leaving for more opportunity
We know we were going to lose some. We arent going to get reamed in the trade though

So if got a top 10 pick that would work?

I would offer Weller plus our 1st pick as well.

Pav kicked 21 in his first 11 compared to 28
Pav kick 18 in next 12 compared to 7.

So what was actually the point of you mentioning Pav? To highlight that Pav at 34 is a more consistent player then McCarthy?

Goal Assists Pav 20
The second coming? unknown I could only find data that listed the top 100 players who have 11 goal assists or more.

So yeah McCarthy is needed, but goals is just one stat and the fact is he does very little else. That's ok but because he's young and hence why we'd like him but it's not like he's going to come to us and start bagging 50 goals a season with the way we play.

I count many as in your squad. Fringe players wanting out is also bad, sure they want opportunities but you lose your depth.

Plus if you take a 2 year approach the numbers are alarming.

Blokes just want out of your club.

It's ok we experienced it at Fremantle for years. No one wants to play for a team with little identity.

I can't speak for other GWS supporters but one Fremantle supporter raised a hypothetical trade of a top 10 pick plus another Freo first rounder. I'd consider that fair - a top 10 pick plus another pick around the 17-20 mark doesn't seem unreasonable, once you take out the factor of what teams actually have. Hell, a top 5 pick could well get the deal done on its own.

Other than Treloar and McCarthy, how many games have the other players who rumouredly want out played this year? That'll let you know whether they're fringe or not, and most of those guys want out precisely because they're not getting game time - and GWS is fine to let them go, even for unders relatively speaking, like we did with Frost, Hombsch, Bruce, Edwards, Aylett, Giles and others that didn't look like making a claim on a best 22 slot.
