Smedts and Murdoch. I can't see either being premiership players.

I wouldn't put it like that; plenty of very ordinary players have played in premiership teams. Much worse than those two. At least you could possibly defend Smedts in that he's been strategically played out of position, and hasn't had a lot of recent luck with injury. Time's running out though, no doubt. Murdoch hasn't got the same excuses, although his two good games per year no doubt justify his continued selection.

Be lucky if they even get a home and away game let alone the ultimate game. I'd say more than 60% of posters haven't got them in their squad in the Best 22 thread.

Murdoch's career average disposals is 12.48 per year, best year was last year with 15.6 and he only averaged just .4 of a goal per game in his best year and Smedts' career average disposals is 10.72 per year, best year was in 2012 with 11.9. Those figures are piss poor, haven't checked but Gregson would be close or have better averages in his 1st year.

Either way you cut it, at least Murdoch has demonstrated that he has potential to be a decent player - this is something Smedts has not done.

Far from being a Murdoch fanboi or apologist but his goals per game is about right given he spent the year back of centre for the most part. More off half back than half forward.

Disagree completely. Smedts has played perfectly good football at senior level on a few occasions (first half of 2013 most notably). He's just inherited the whipping boy mantle, and no doubt yourself and others just cannot wait for him to either fail or get delisted.

That might be right but can't see him being to much better than he is, he's as soft as they come and if he didn't have pace i don't think he'd be around. I would much have been in favour of including him in the Danger or Henderson trades if it meant we could of somehow kept one of those 1st round picks.

Disagree completely. Smedts gets the cheapest ball imaginable and constantly makes mistake. He makes Brown look like Ablett Snr. Good football on a few occasions 3 years ago... hardly compelling.

Although, for a kid of 190cm I think his contested footy is weak, especially when it comes to contested marking. Although I have seem him lay some very good tackles. But I would like to see him start to win the ball in the air.

+1 seeing him playing I would have thought he's 185 tops. He doesn't need to be elegant just efficient like Blicavs.

No he is 190cm. He never stands up straight but stands with a stooped back. That could create the illusion that he is only around 185cm.

Hardly compelling is apt. The problem is it also absolutely applies to Murdoch, and there are others it would flatter.

It is amazing how enduring the idea of the favourite son (or former player) as coach is. You know when the last season was when an ex-player coached the team? 1988.

and we have only had 4 coaches since than.

Don't forget that there are 2 recent examples of ex-players going on to coach their clubs to premierships. Roos and Worsfold.

Like I said I am not anointing Ling as our next coach should Scott soon leave, I just think he is a better chance than Llyod.

throw in Mackie, Kersten who weighs 210lbs (sigh, I like the kid but he needs to stop pulling out of contests), Motlop and now Smith and we have quite a few uncontested sea gull-types which would really have the opposition licking their fat lips.

Smedts is hardly a softie either, it's just that he lacks any awareness whatsoever and as a consequence, butchers the ball, gets pinged for holding the ball & basically stinks it up a couple levels higher than what Kane Tenace once did.

Don't we need some outside players as well as inside players ?

It would surprise most people to know that we have a bigger bodied side than Hawthorn who have a number of really short players in their team .

Look I don't necessarily think they're hopeless but if we were to have a premiership team in the next couple of years I doubt either would make the cut.

He isn't, the problem is he tries to go in hard but he has the physical stature of a young Scotty Bamford and is constantly bumped off the ball too easily and so looks weak in the contest.

I'm not disagreeing at all just as you say looks and plays smaller.

Jesus, ling is zero chance of coaching any club.
Even has a full time assistant which should be mandatory before the major job.

As if he's giving up easy street.

Cook on Scott.

“He has had one of the toughest jobs in the AFL. Our club has been in transition ever since he arrived,” says Cook of Scott.

“Winning that premiership in the first year was unbelievable because it could have gone the other way very quickly.

Cook on Scott '''But we also wanted someone who could demonstrate he could lead the rebuilding of the list to make a big impression again by 2015-2016."
The fact is Cook and the club looked at our coaching panel during the season and found it needed significant change which also means they thought it wasn't doing a good job in it's previous state, hence the appointment of Lloyd, promotion of Scarlett, as well as the demotion of O'bree. Now if the club had lost some confidence in it's coaching team I think it's reasonable to assume they would've lost some confidence in Scott as well given the fact he's the head of that coaching team. Cook will talk up Scott as long as he's at the club just like all club CEO's do but what we should be paying attention to regarding Cooks statements is his expectations of the club which matched against our results next year will tell the true story of how he really thinks Scott is going.

Smedts really isnt as shit as some people on here make out, hes played some solid footy in the past few years with injury interrupted seasons, just another whipping boy, could be anything if he can get his body right.

Ive never been his biggest fan. The leg speed he was touted to have has certainly been underwhelming. However to his credit I think hes a natural forward, strong mark and knows were to lead. Furthermore his kicking isnt to bad compared to others on our side. The problem with Smedts is his game hasnt developed as we would of hoped - the position of a medium forward has been occupied by some brilliant players like Johnson and now Menzal. Love to see him prove me wrong but I just dont know with him. Ill continue to sit on the fence.
