They extracted "Rey" from some recorded audio of Sir Alec Guinness saying "afraid" many years ago that was stored. Extraordinary.

Ewan McGregor also came in just to do that one line.

Yeah I knew about the line from Sir Alec and heard that, it was very, very cool. Listened for the McGregor line but could not hear it. "First steps" is definitely what he said?

Luke cremating the slain Jedi students???

Kylo Ren killing a soldier who was going for Rey???

Hamill already shot a bunch of scenes on Skellig Island for Ep VIII. And has now shaved off his beard and cut his hair short.

He's gonna get killed off early in Ep VIII imo, Kylo tracks Rey down there, has a duel with Luke and strikes him down dead.

They'll turn him into Rey's force-ghost, and the new SW will move on with Rey and Kylo.

Different story styles though, Star Wars has never done that, mostly because the opening text fills in the blanks. Continuing straight off from that scene would be a stylistic departure from the previous 7 films.

Ok i'll be more reasonable then...

It's possible Rian Johnson wanted to shoot those Skellig scenes early, some of those scenes could be start of Ep8 sequences, some could be end of Ep8 sequences, to get that work in while they had the chance.

Then Johnson could've told Hamill, I don't need you for further shooting until later in the year, so go and R&R, shave your beard, cut your hair, but I need you back in August (say), so make sure you start growing that beard and hair soon.

Still, hair takes a long time to grow. So maybe in the movie he trims his hair, but keeps his beard....for scenes in the middle of the film. But...that would refute the notion that Hamill is scene middle of the film with beard and short hair, but then some of those Skellig scenes with him beard and long hair again.

Again...that points to me that those Skellig scenes already shot were for the start of Ep8. The story picks up there, days/weeks later. And THEN Luke gets either killed off (by Kylo at Skellig), or Luke leaves Skellig in the middle of the movie, gets his hair cut, keeps beard, and resumes his role as a Jedi warrior killing the bad guys in the middle of the movie.

That too is likely. If we're assuming that the new generation will be the focus, then Luke's role isn't necessarily one requiring too much screen time, or even entirely similar parts of the story (think Yoda and Mace Windu in 2 and 3). He doesn't need to be on screen as much as Rey or Finn to be an important character.

LOTR was one continuous story though, was my point. Was all initially one book. And The Hobbit IS one book. Star Wars is clearly 6 separate parts.

Like The Force Awakens, filming for Episode VIII will take place at Pinewood Studios near London. Principal filming is scheduled to begin in January 2016. In September 2015, some pre-production filming took place on the island of Skellig Michael, Ireland to take advantage of better weather conditions.

They need to move away from the OT completely in the next one. Having this film follow a similar path to ANH is understandable but they need to be more bold now.

As you can see there AND HERE, it's interesting how so many people view Luke as a childhood hero, and if he's in any way tarnished, they'll dump SW forever. We already saw Disney unceremoniously get rid of Han. Leia and Luke next imo.

If they are going to just kill off Luke after a bit of training with Rey...count me out for any other SW film in the future. Doubt they will go that way, but Ive still got the feeling this trilogy is about the removal of the "Skywalker" lineage from the SW universe. Kylo will most likely die and Ive got a feeling that Luke will eventually too (or he just won't have any kids and die of old age). Right now Im assuming Rey is not his daughter.

Probably so and if they do that, I am finished with SW.

I'm with you, totally out if this happens, I'll go back to ROTJ being the end..lol I would have to believe Disney is smart enough to know Luke is the Mickey Mouse of the Star Wars Galaxy, oh man that's a bad analogy.. But you get the idea, people want to see Luke and want him to go down in a heroic way, big time.

Luke will almost certainly die in VIII. What other way can they match the complete despair &emptiness, of TESB? When that movie was over it felt like everything done in ANH was lost. I'm also not convinced Ben Solo is the only child of Leia and Han.

Luke is probably going to be killed off. The new trilogy is about Vader's grand children. Luke fulfilled his destiny as a young Jedi, he saved and redeemed his father. I believe the force will further call for him to rebuild or restart a new Jedi order but after that, the story moves to a new generation. Fellas if Disney is willing to kill Han, and let his body fall in a reactor nobody is off limits. I believe Kylo will kill Luke or Luke will sacrifice himself ala Obi Wan in episode 8 with another huge plot twist.

Well lets also be realistic. Ford wanted Han dead, not Disney. If Ford wanted in, they would carry him so long as there is breath in him.

Luke and the Skywalkers represent George Lucas. I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the trilogy, there would be no further representation of Lucas. Thats why I don't think Rey is related. IF she is, I will gladly eat crow.

I dont think Luke will be killed. When he leaves he will become one with the force by his own doing. Making Obi Wans "more powerful than you can imagine" quote really interesting. Luke as a force ghost could change how we view force ghosts

Rian Johnson isn't going to copy-paste shit from the OT. This is what Kasdan has to say about it:

Ewan McGregor's line was right at the end of the vision. Something along the lines of "Rey...these are your first steps".

Earlier, it is heavily speculated that the moment Luke touches R2 is a cremation of his lost students (the flames in the background). There's a also a brief shot of a (allegedly) Knight of Ren advancing towards Rey, only to be stabbed from behind by Kylo/Ben.

This has fueled rumours that Rey was present during the slaughter and perhaps has repressed her memories of being trained by Luke. Maybe Kylo spared her life at the time.

On top of Frank Oz's voiceover, there was a shitload happening in these moments. Fascinating stuff.

How and when Luke/Anakin's saber was retireved from Bespin is critical to this. Are these memories/visions entirely of the saber? Or of Rey herself. Very important.

Btw, the rumor of the lightsaber falling thru space happens to be quite possible....but not Luke/Anakin's one, but Vader's one. Aftermath, the new canon book, has started to flesh out the backstory of Snoke etc. It says there's a group called the Acolytes of the Beyond who are into relic collecting of Siths, and Vader's lost lightsaber apparently falls into the hands of some scavenger who sells it to the Acolytes. This is where the story of the Knights of Ren being Vader worshipers and/or relic hunters comes into play, and how Snoke might not be Plagueis at all, but one of these people from a region called The Beyond.

Luke turning into a Force Ghost and appearing at some point saying: "USE THE FORCE REY!" is inevitable.

Yoda's pretty much the only Jedi that's died of old age so it's fair to say that Luke's going to get sabre'd to death, probably by Kylo, and probably the same way Obi Wan went.

It would be a massive shock if things panned out any differently, but I'd be stoked if they did.

It's nice that they went to such lengths to get Alex's voice in there, but this would have taken a couple of minutes at most to achieve. FWIW the voicing for Woodstock & Snoopy in the new Peanuts film are entirely archival recordings as well

I've read Aftermath.

This was one of the better passages. I liked this concept of cult like followers of the Sith/Vader. I don't recall it conclusively saying that it was Vader's saber. But its conceivable Luke retireved it from the Death Star 2 and cremated it along with the rest of his "body".

I thought that these acolytes would end up being the Knights of Ren. Eager to learn more about this group and how Snoke rose to the position he's in.
