Wow. What a film. A genuinely riveting story told masterfully. Stunning performances from Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett. The look and feel of the film was as 1950's as I can remember seeing in a modern film. The directing is on point. The score is great. Just everything. Everything about this film is great and it's laughable it wasn't nominated for Best Picture but The Big Short was.

Go and see this movie.

4.5/5

REVENANT, enjoyable flick, nothing outstanding 3.5/5

LAST ORDERS. Seen it when it first came out, liked it then and like it now. Great cast. 4/5

ARLINGTON ROAD

It's taken me 17 years to work up the courage to watch this again.

I don't even want to really talk about it so i don't give anything away but the climax made me feel legit crook in the guts that 1st time i saw it.
If you've never seen it , DO NOT read up about it online , just watch it.

10/10 for lasting impact.

Cloverfield.

I think the trailer for the new one looks awesome so I figured I'd give this another look.

It is a good movie, especially compared to most in the found footage genre. I hated the guy holding the camera, but the acting was fine otherwise and the monster looked pretty cool. I don't think it's a classic but it's enjoyable and it's pretty good visually.

3/5

The Hateful Eight

Disclaimer - I've never really dug Tarantino besides Reservoir Dogs.

This film was a tale of two halves. Literally since I saw the Roadshow version. Pre intermission it was interesting enough. Setting a lot up. Establishing characters. Kurt Russell, Samuel L and in particular Walton Goggins are in fine form. All the characters are interesting and well written. But I'm just someone who doesn't mesh with Tarantino's way of telling a story. He seems to have just become a parody of himself. And in the second part of the film it all comes out. He includes what people expect not because it benefits the story, but because it's what people expect. And I just don't dig it. The non-linear story, the violence. It's just something I look at and see through. Maybe it's just me. But post intermission it went off the rails.

As for the 70mm, oh my word. More films shot like this please. Absolutely beautiful. Felt like a true film rather than just a movie, if that makes sense.

Film itself - 3/5. Don't bother unless you're a QT fan.

Roadshow version - 3.5/5. Go and see it for the 70mm.

The Big Short. I've zero financial acumen but was able to follow the story. Slow to start and a couple of the jokes fell flat (may have been due to the huge amount of fuddy duddies in the cinema) but I enjoyed the way it was presented. 8/10

One of my favourite films. The marketing behind this was insanely good.

It's definitely not just you. Big Qt fan overall but agree with most of your review. Film was very self conscious.

BUT I'm gonna give it a re-watch out of respect for the beast director that is.

Was reading up about this film online yesterday.

Was due for release until COLUMBINE , studio shat ( understandably ) and shelved it for a few months.
Of course it was lost in the mix when it finally was released.

didnt know that! makes total sense though doesnt it?

Then it's no wonder you're not a fan of his work if you haven't seen his best stuff.

Check it out. Excellent story, cast and soundtrack. Just don't see it thinking "I'm watching a QT film".
I've seen

Reservoir Dogs (liked it a lot)
Kill Bill Part 1
Half of Inglorious Basterds (before I turned it off out of boredom)
Django Unchained
Hateful Eight

Go see Jackie Brown, I reckon you'll like it.

Quite surprised no one mentioned Pulp Fiction clearly he's best film so many great stories in the one movie not to mention the awesome cast so many great actors
Definitely number 1

The Revenant - Mixed feelings. Undeniably a gorgeous film (tech has come a fair way in the last 10 years), an impressive physical performance by Leo. And it did remind me of some of my favourite films in The New World, The Proposition, Jesse James, Meek's Cutoff. But it wasn't a sum of all those parts (that would be impossible) rather just recognisable elements of each. If anything I think it suffered from being too ambitious - an art house film dressed to be an Oscar winner. Which is fine, but didn't always work for me.
