Can we infer from that video that the players and coaches have been read the riot act? The reason I ask is I just find it strange that Bucks would release a video like that after just 3 games. It leaves him no wriggle room at all if the team were to repeat the performance on the weekend.

I had that feeling already after Eddies performance on 360. That kind of speech, you could imagine him going off in the front of the playersgroup similarly less softspoken and a few more expletives.
As for Bucks, teleprompting is not his forte. He looks more insecure then I thought he would be.

Have you been watching us play Quicky? We could play Essendon, Carlton and Brisbane for the rest of the season and we'd probably still find a way to bugger it up...

On a serious note the best outcome possible is to go 3-1 over the next month to get ahead of the ledger and limit the damage v West Coast. From there you try to build into the season, but it'll be a monumental task to bring the % so we're better off just looking at wins for now anything else is a bonus, IMO.

I have yeah. I still believe our list is better than the garbage that we are delivering. And a soft draw may help us work into the season. Who know's what happens if we get some confidence.

If he spoke from the heart why was he reading from a teleprompter?

Not that it matters that much, but some people get inspired by that, others dont

I know he cares, and i know he loves the club.

Just didnt do it for me.
You can write your own speech and still be speaking from the heart.
I thought it was ok. I may have to listen to it again but he addressed the idea that players don't give a stuff about performance and each other. I reckon he read quite a few emails from supporters.

That I realised but don't think Bucks would be so public as Malthouse with his public displays of self-grief and remonstrating with the club. He would want a more dignified exit.
He has been quite open about his fate in the past. For Bucks coaching MagPies is the pinnacle, don't think he would be interested in other clubs when he could still be with us.
The end of his tenure would always be him going on until he gets tapped on the shoulder that it has been enough.

Yeh i dont agree with that at all, the players not trying bit. That came more from Robbo than anything ive read in here.

As for his delivery, didnt inspire me one bit, but thats just me.
The only coach ive listened to that i did want to hear was Tom Hafey. Could listen to him talk about football or anything for the matter.

Didn't do it for me either, but he has put it out there, nowhere to hide from here on.
As for the telepromoter, covered quite a few areas and would be hard to commit all to memory. This I know from my training days, always referred to notes when I had something important to empart.

But for me, that would of been more genuine, even tho it may hav appeared less 'slick'

We all know he is hurting, we all know he is trying. For me it didnt come across as real as i thought it should of been.

I dont know, maybe im a harsh judge
I think i like the fire and brimstone approach.

Someone did post a whisper we were planning on having a meeting of that sort.

We can only hope it did eventuate.

On that video, all I keep hearing is how they have been working hard and will continue to keep working hard. It's the same message every week. I have no doubt they're trying, I just keep thinking that game-plan wise we're way off the mark. No amount of hard work is going to solve the pretty obvious disconnect between what the coaches think and how the players are executing those plans. I think there's a bit of a delusion as to how much of a 'buy-in' there actually is at the club, from everyone involved, at the moment.

I haven't heard that Buckley had wanted MM to another year and would not have believed it if I had. The two men thoroughly disliked each other in the end. If MM had stayed, the men would never have harmonious coached together.

Maybe MM secretly believed that Buckley would not make a good coach?. Perhaps Buckley's relationship with the players was not how MM would have interacted, or maybe he saw that Buck's inner self-talk motivation approach was no match for his mix of fire and brimstone and love of the boys?

Surely the difference in their styles was evident in the cultural revolution under Buckley that outed Thomas, Shaw, Didak, Wellingham and others? To suggest that Bucks and Mick could amicably have spent another year together, and that Bucks actually suggested the arrangement to Ed, is ludicrous.

MM wasn't your Barrassi type fire and brimstone. He was actually more measured than what the outside perception would suggest and that's not such a bad thing. There was footage of his pre match address before the 2002 Grand Final, it certainly didn't get the hairs to stand up on the back of the neck. I was hanging out for a smash through the wall type speech alas it wasn't to be. We haven't seen a pre match address from Buckley so it's hard to say what he's like. Are you going off his own words about player self motivation?
I enjoy the stories of fire and brimstone speeches but I also like hearing players say that they have no memory of what was said during those speeches.
McKenna , Watters and Neeld were given glowing references by Malthouse. Watters and Neeld hardly got comfortable in their offices before they were moved out. Not sure what the deal was with McKenna but perhaps the players stopped responding to him. Laidley wasn't a roaring success at North but Scott is doing alright at the moment. Whether MM thought he'd be a good coach or not could be based on whether he thinks that the coach is an adequate reflection of him, as you've pointed out. An MM clone is not necessarily going to be successful.

bit harsh on laidley, considering he didn't know if he would be coaching in Melbourne, canberra, gold coast, tasmania, for much of he's tenure.

Maybe something like:
Hey all you keyboard warriors out there, the team and I have been bursting our arses, we thought we were better on paper, it is just when we get to the ground and there is another team there, that we got it wrong.
It seems just at the moment we aren't good enough.
We have sat down with a cup of tea and promise you we will do better.
So stop with the phone calls, emails and Twitter.

it was just a collage of motherhood statements, settle the nerves. Not sure what else he could have said. I don't attach much weight to it one way or the other. Its a bit of pr thats all.

Yep, something to settle the natives and beating drums.
All I want is less words and a win on Sunday and the next three weeks.
Deeds not words.

I wanted him to point at the camera and say

"All you under 14 coaches need to shut the **** up about gameplan. GAGF!"
"Purple, you ****in ambulance chaser, what the **** would you know? GAGF!"
"Only Melbourne fapped over their NAB results, I didn't ask you predict finals for us based on a glorified practise match. GAGF!"
"untried coach? Coaching with that old ****in megalomaniac was very trying. GAGF!"
"man on man? You lot have been talking about a lack of pace and you want us to go head to head with faster and more skilful opponents? GAGF."
"I'm Nathan ****in Buckley and the rest of you campaigners can GAGF"

We beat Richmond we not winning the spoon.
It will be tough to get the spoon off Essendon.
Same with Carlton, Brisbane.
At worst we could go 15 or 12 like past years.
It's inconceivable we have some really good or OK games. Team could get on a roll. Win here or there.
We win say 3 of next 5, there's 4 - 4 right there middle of the road. Win 4 it's 5 - 3 spoon is gone sorry

I don't think we will win it but with the style of footy we are currently playing we are part of that conversation. That doesn't sit well with me.

You really need to let go. Mick left the building 5 years ago ..... Seriously what does it add to a debate on whether Bucks is the right coach to take us forward.

I made that comment in regard to Ed and his responsibility for the current situation.

I checked your posts in this thread from Jan/Feb and you appear to have significantly abandoned your defence of Buckley, and are now seeking that Bucks remain coach only the remainder of this season rather than being given a 2 year extension. Your posts were attracting Baltimore Jack likes where I doubt they would now. 3 weeks is a long time in a supporter's life.

Not that I have a problem with the Fletcher Christian role you have assumed this year - I'll help you toss him off ship and set him adrift with his mates in a leaky boat, and throw in his wake the zone defence strategy. Let's hope he does not then proves a skillful navigator of the tide of unpopular opinion like Bligh. When he's gone, we don't want him convincing others that he was wronged.

I abandoned my belief in Buckley as coach at around 4pm last Saturday. If he can turn it around I will happily get back on the bandwagon. That is the nature of footy, coaches are judged on results, we are currently uncompetitive against teams that are themselves uncompetitive against quality teams. That is how far we have dropped in only three games. Alarm bells are ringing my friend.

"man on man? You lot have been talking about a lack of pace and you want us to go head to head with faster and more skilful opponents? "

An interesting post - defending Buckley's zoning strategy on the grounds that we cannot go man on man with faster and more skilful opponents...

Okay, so...

WTF have we been doing for the past several seasons to recruit players who can play man on man?

Can we infer from that video that the players and coaches have been read the riot act? The reason I ask is I just find it strange that Bucks would release a video like that after just 3 games. It leaves him no wriggle room at all if the team were to repeat the performance on the weekend.

I would not be surprised if that is the case. Ed's public comment about his willingness to sack Bucks if our poor start continues is further evidence. Unfortunately for Bucks I think it is unrealistic to expect the players to turn things around that quickly, particularly when the system they have worked on all preseason appears to be fundamentally flawed.

SO you wanted him to say just one word

"FIGJAM"

I know we had Finals early in his Coaching Career but I am talking this could Save or Destroy Bucks Career.

So after a Pathetic 1st 3 Rounds and we have these next 5 Games:

  • Demons
  • Bombers
  • Eagles
  • Blue
  • Lions
The Eagles game is the only 1 can see us losing as very hard over at Subi.

But we should Really Beats Bombers,Blues and Lions very easily and Demons are Winnable but not sure thing.

So we really should go 4-1 over the next 5 Games.

The Worse is we lose all games and IF That Happens something drastic has to happen at the Club as Bombers,Blues and Lions are the Worst 3 Sides in the Comp

We are going to lose all 5 games.
