Gaff is an AA winger averaging 30 touches a game. Bonifide gun, still young. if he nominates us we make the trade happen. He's worth a top 5 pick easily.

We won't have that pick hopefully and I think teams with that top 5 pick probably won't attract him. That means he's worth a 5 to 10 with a possible later pick swap to let them save face if we can convince him to come. He's very much an outside mid and his contested footy isn't that strong. Doesn't tackle and doesn't win clearances and he's not the greatest kick. I still think he'd be in our best most weeks but he's not as good as some of those guys at GWS who have a bit more of an all round game and possibly a higher ceiling- not that he's not good now.

No way he's worth a pick under 5 - you would take that to the draft even if it's his value. To me it's a 5 to 10 pick and maybe a later pick swap there way the later the pick they get. He's an excellent player but I prefer some of the GWS kids and the moment it weighs too much in their favour I'd bail and wait for a GWS kid to come out of contract.
Explain to me how a number 4 draft pick who won a B&F and all Australian at 23 has gone down in value?

Who's to say you'd get a better player with pick 5? I'd be bloody happy if the kid we drafted ended up as good as Gaff.

Most of me would be super happy to have Gaff, but for some reason there's a little part of me that he just leaves cold.

Can't explain it.

He's worth as much as anyone will pay for him but teams with pick 4 are going to be less attractive to Gaff I imagine. I'm assuming he want to go home so they are forced to trade for less than true value. We don't have a second round pick to give and I doubt we give up any player we rate. We will be a very attractive club to nominate when we can afford to pay huge money to him. WCE are unlikely togged top trade value for him if he nominates.

I agree.

I think for me he is a bit inbetween, in the sense he will clearly add a lot to the team but by going hard for him do we miss out on a better player next off season?

You said he is the right type of player and suits our needs but now you are looking at others. Your first 2 reasons surely means we don't really need to look at others

I think coaches like all rounders more than outsiders, Richo also supposedly doesn't play Lee because he won't tackle, I think Gaff averages one tackle a game. I still think he suits needs as we have plenty of inside grunt ATM. I think Shiel and Kelly could probably do the outside role and play some coal face work as well. It's more I wouldn't mortgage the future on one player, no way do we pay 2 first rounders or it would be a very dangerous at this point in the rebuild. I think last year we put everything into Carlisle and stopped looking elsewhere and backed ourselves into a corner.

That's me too, there is something about him that means I just don't rate him as high as I should even when I watch him play and he does some fantastic stuff.

Right him off at your peril, just make sure you accept criticism when you're wrong.
Hrovat will be a really good player.
He may be good in your opinion but seriously, the last thing we need is another midget. What we need is a beast (Fyfe/Dangerfield style) clearance & CP inside mid, a speedy marking outside wingman (Isaac Smith type) & a 3rd tall defender. Preferably in that order

Rat doesn't fit into any of these categories.

A couple of years ago i was keen but his body is super fragile and as you said we have too many smalls now. I hope he has a good career but I would rather play Tom Curren if we wanted a smaller inside mid in the team. If I was looking at guys outside of best 22 currently Broomhead, Ahern, Pickett, Honeychurch, Ryan Clarke etc would all be good targets

+1, but I reckon d-Mac will actually be able to get his own ball ;)
I think you're selling Isaac Smith pretty short there. Any wingman that can go at a CP to UP ratio of 1:3 from an average near enough to 21 disposals a game is doing pretty damn well

I love Armo and Longer but FWIW we have Seb, Dunstan and Acres as inside mids all U23, with Seb avg 27 disposals and Dunstan 18 to Armo's 21 this year. Also we have Hickey and Pierce (who I always thought had something) are looking really good and we have rucking depth.
As such I wouldn't be against the idea of trading them if the right offer came our way (1st rd picks)
If I was Ameet maybe look at something of a similar deal to what GWS did with Carlton last year or the dees a few years back.
If we end up with say pick 6 and trade armo for lets say 12ish and Longer for 16ish then:
12 + 16 to GWS for Marchbank, Steele, Ahern
2017 1st to WC for Gaff + Lamb

Go to Draft with 6, Rd 3 pick, Rd 4 pick

In: Steele, Marchbank, Ahern, Gaff, Lamb
Out: Armo, Longer, 2017 1st

I know Tomlinson has had a few good weeks in the Neafl but could he play a similar role to the one roo currently plays off the wing as the link upp big guy who can swing back? Would give us great flexibility

Agree.
Who is to say we cannot get both. Because I never said that

Might not. You might also get the best player of the decade. That's a lot better than Gaff. And yep the pick could be worse. Just settling for "pretty good" rather than chasing an out and out gun though. We have some depth and evenness. That type of trade may have suited us back in our last era with a gun top group and weaker depth.

Was just thinking today he is EXACTLY the player we need. On our list there's no one like him (maybe White from reports but a long way to go there). Wonder how much coin Smith is on, we could always throw plenty of cash at him ;)

He's an interesting one because we have waited for so long you start to doubt him. He's about 193 and probably a not a bad post Fisher Dempster replacement and probably one of the most gettable Giants. I wouldn't want to pay much at the trade table but he'd be handy back up at least. You wouldn't want Marchbank and him though and he'd need to play predominantly back. He had a 52 possession NEAFL game that not bad at any level of footy.
