Is it not strange though that we'd sign up players just to trade them out? Longer and Pierce are signed until end of 2018

Contracts mean bugger all thses days, basically just insures a player will be on a list somewhere earning X amount.
To an extent I agree, but I still think it's weird to sign them, only earlier this year, and then get rid of them
If it was the 3rd year in a 4 year deal, different story

Delisting so far it would seem that with Curren & Delaney & possibly rooking Chips opens 3 draft spots for picks 10 & 46 and probably rookie upgrade for NOK. Any player from that point entering into the club requires a player exiting the club.

After seeing Sandy a few times and on Sunday you can make an argument for keeping the following especially after our incredible injury run. When clubs enquire about them I can see Trout the Mississippi River Poker player playing a game as follows;

Shenton -- No space for high forward now that Members has grabbed that spot, but gees he's handy back up.
Lee -- Back Up tall swingman as a forward he is behind Bruce, Riewoldt, Membrey & McCartin (no room in that list)
Templeton-- Keeps knocking on door & Gresh took his spot whilst he was recovering from injury issues.
Sincs-- More time, building into a GOF
Longer-- Not a bad back up to Hickey at this stage & recovering from spate of injuries- (No trade unless it nets us a First Rounder)

Finishing with the line: "All these guys have decent reasons to stay on our list & also decent cases why they have tradable value to other sides." Why do you ask, do you also see what I see? We want a 3rd round minimum for any of them preferably upgrading into second round gets us interested.

With GCS desire for players that have been in the system for a while, they nearly all fit that requirement could see Temps or Shents in their colours next year. Freo need for a Forward, Tom Lee & Cam Shenton would add depth and may even start.

Brisbane are in need of some solid citizens that have been in a good environment - Hard to believe but that description for once fits the Sainters.

Richmond, I would not wish that on an enemy, our guys would be better at Sandy next year.

Carlton have a known capacity to take our ordinary players ( whatshisname ruckman we traded surname started with C) and make them just as ordinary in exchange for draft picks. Precedent with swaps with GWS as well.

So sit back and watch as each week Sandy plays in the finals the trade enquiries about our players gets more sizzle about it!

I believe it will be at this stage Steele in Murdoch out (like for like)
Marchbank if he gets to us for Lee/Shenton
Holmes upgrade probably means that Pierce is out as well.

As Ghost & a few others have mentioned, it really just a way of protecting any trade value that a player has.

Any team sniffing around our ruckmen now knows that they will have to trade for them... They can't just offer them $$ & opportunity & offer the club an average pick/ wait til after Oct 30 & pick them up in the draft or as a DFA.

Smart move... I still think we'll see one of our big fellas move on. Billy's performance yesterday would certainly have a few clubs adding him to their whiteboard.

Holmes signs on. So with him being upgraded. That's more in the chopping block. Interesting times ahead.

For all those people who want to trade out 2017 picks, just think about what missing on a superdraft can feel like.

2001 was a superdraft, and a few clubs didn't get much out of them. 2013 was a superdraft that delivered Billings, Dunstan and Acres. Hell, even Sydney got Aliir Aliir and Nankervis late in the draft.

I actually created this thread to show how good the 2013 draft was!

Nah

Freo get Hill
Hawks get Longer
We get Weller

However it happens a longer out, weller in situation would be a big win for us from a list mgt point of view.
We're overstocked for starting 22 ruckmen who are just ruckmen.

Being able to cash out one of those to plug a big gap we have in the midfield would be a double win.

Exactly like what happened with mcevoy- it would be a shame to lose a talent like billy... But if someone offers us genuine quality to improve the midfield, we take it!

Holmes very lucky.
Doesnt have much scope in his game, very likely this will be his last contract.
So handy to be tall these days.

With Holmes upgraded, that means we have 1 primary list spot available. We going have to delist another 3 players if we are going to trade in a player and use 2 selections in the national draft.

Yeah I'm worried what Patty will do to Hamling and Roberts next season. Might be followed up SVU the reaming he gives them.

Who.

I don't agree plenty of rucks don't do much around the ground other than provide an extra witches hat. He was pretty good against Brisbane and provided some shepherds and made it to contests even if he didn't do heap else. I thought he was up to the standard of at least Shaun Hampson of something. His tap work is really well directed and if you are a mid it makes a huge difference to the amount of centre clearances you win and gives us chances to set up meaningful forward surges.

Plus his missus is hot

Fisher retire
Longer trade
Lee delisted (trade in defender)

Gonna be a tough call on either Wright, Shenton, Murdoch or Lee.
All have shown something but any could be gone.

Pick 10 for Laverde and the Merrett Bros!!!

Also Ill be gutted if we lose Billy Longer after just 2 years. 12 months ago we were all "Well we can afford to trade Hickey because Longer is gonna be a jet" and now the shoe is on the other foot. If Hickey knee blows out are we really going to ruck Holmes/Pierce in a year where we are aiming for finals?

Unless Billy is begging for a trade then let him and Hickey fight it out for another year and make a move at the end of 2017 when we have a better grasp on Lewy Pierce.

Thought Hampson was well on top of him.
He is good in the ruck contest but id say thats only half the job.
Doesnt find the ball and can be loose on his opponent.
He makes Hickey look so good

Jackson is a spud.

We weren't ALL in the i heart longer, hickeys a dud fanclub. (exaggeration added for artistic flair)

I remember a year ago posting in the 'what unpopular opinions do you have' thread something about hick is the better player of the 2.
His extra athleticism was always going to mean he would go past billy in terms of being a more damaging player.
Billy's still a talent- but limited by his extra bulk which isn't as important in footy as it used to be.

I'm concerned to that trading Billy would really expose us if Hick gets hurt.

Watching him yesterday, Billy was a brute inside with some crushing tackles, throwing his weight around to clear space for our mids as well as showing nice ruck work and taking a few important grabs.

It would take a really, really good offer to move him on... I'd much rather we get some value for Pierce or Holmesy (3rd rounders) than let Billy walk.

Weller for Longer sounds good on paper but I'm not sold on Weller & value big physical ruckmen & the role that they play in big finals.
