Because all the talk has been that the Swans like Mitchell but they cant afford to pay him what he was on. The number $380k has been thrown around a lot, not just on BF.

Though I guess its possible the media saw $380k on here and decided to run with it.

So if true, they are offering him half what Kennedy is on.

And they still need to find money for Heeney, Aliir, Papley, etc.

Hawks and Swans both had 17 wins. Swans got 105 votes, Hawks got 72. I guess despite having equal wins during the regular season the Swans were actually nearly 50% better - despite Hawks and Swans being 1 - 1 head to head.

Because the Brownlow tells us exactly how good players are. And exactly how good teams are.

The Brownlow isn't a great indicator of anything, but there's no need for two teams on equal wins to get equal votes. The Hawks had a number of very close wins where opponents could have stolen some votes, and the Swans superior percentage indicators they had quite a few easy wins where all potential votes would have been captured.

I agree, but it was more the massive difference.

St Kilda got far more than the Kangaroos despite finishing lower on the ladder. Essendon got far more than Brisbane despite finishing lower on the ladder.

Sydney's strength is the midfield, and umpires give most of their votes to midfielders. The perfect storm.

That's true - it's definitely a midfielders medal. The umps say they don't look at the stats but the votes nearly always go with the guys who rack them up.

I think it depends on the talk. In this case I believe it because it is hard to imagine how Sydney doesnt have cap issues with how much their top paid players are on. And all those kids coming through who will want to go from $100k a year to $300k a year or more.

Mitchell being the guy without a contract, and not being the top 2 or 3 midfielders, is clearly the one who gets the squeeze.

So the Swans offer him less money and hope he stays, then he decides whether to accept it or chase the big offers elsewhere.

I think this is right in that IF he says he want out of Sydney to get some more $$ then Swans can go to all these clubs and see what they will offer for him but at the end of the day Tom still needs to nominate a club of choice and the AFL rules are that despite Tigers putting up pick 6 and being the best offer for the Swans unless Tom agrees to go there he wont go there via a trade, in American sports then yeah that would be the case. Not saying he wont nominate Richmond was only a example

Multiple clubs would have been interested for a couple of years. last night, the last 6 weeks or the last 12 months would not have changed the landscape as much as the media would have us believe. Plenty in the know said from the start that the Mitchell deal is pretty much done, the JOM was the hard one. The only concern I have is that nothing is ever done until it's done, and that's the case with all deals. Minnow clubs posture and beat their chest before caving, quality clubs usually facilitate a deal that suits them and the player wanting out and then the destination club - in that order. They always try to facilitate, it makes people more likely to assist them in the future and it makes players more likely to look favorably upon them when deciding where they might want to play.
None of us know, history says it is probably already locked away with someone.

That's true, but I'd think if another club was offering more money then Tom would be interested. It's rare that a club refuses to trade and sends the player through the PSD, but I think that will become more common until we eventually adopt the US free agency system where clubs have some power.

His manager said a couple of months ago that Mitchell wanted to stay but talks were on hold until after the season ends. Managers can talk a load of bull crap, but as it stands those are the only facts we have - the rest are BigFooty generated rumours.
