They must rate him, they signed him to the end of 2018.

I reckon he looked like potential at some point, early on signing the kids up to big contracts to hold them was all they had to keep them. Now those generous contracts are a yoke for their backs as they try to keep their elite players together. They resigned patton early on too and he'd shown very little but a tendency towards knee injuries.

i don't think Corr is any better than Jackshe though. Both considered swingmen when recruited which I'm starting to take as meaning not very good tall players who can't do forward or back very well.

Jackshe probably has better natural talent but has a very ordinary work ethic.

Corr a bit more limited but is a very professional kid.

Corr is also a pure defender whereas KJ supposedly had the fwd/back flexibility.

Interesting just then on Trade Radio. Purple saying that Billy Longer's manager claimed that Billy's preferred position is to stay on our list and fight it out behind Hickey

They'd say that, regardless of whether they actually want Billy to stick around or seek a trade, because it is a win/win statement.
  • If Billy stays, then the statement is one of fortitude in backing the Saints plan, and shows his desire to improve
  • If Billy goes, then his 'preferred position' of staying at the Saints means it will take more coin to get him out of there (AKA managerial pay day)

I wonder why many on here seem more worried about tall backs compared to mids. Surely the grand Final teams showed us how footy is going or has gone. Get a tall back but use pick 100 on him. Get mids with any good picks at all.

Agree but I reckon if we target tall defenders they need to be mobile running types like Gilbert. Corr seems to fit the bill.

On a side note, after typing out my post on Longer, I think that Billy's stature in the club has suddenly become more apparent. I genuinely do believe that Longer wishes to stay at St Kilda, but (from what I know about Billy, based on people who know him, and also tidbits like interviews) I also believe the talk that he has issues with laziness and drive.
I would say that the club would've sat down with Billy at the tail end of this season, and discussed what it would take for Billy to regain the position as the number one ruck from Hickey after the latter's amazing season. In doing so, they would've raised their concerns about Billy's work ethic and how they do not think he is capable of dethroning Tom if he does not improve. Now, Billy, who apparently loves being at the club for whatever reason (friends? location? environment?) obviously wants to stay, so a deal was cut with the club, as follows:

The Saints re-sign Billy for 2 years. Why 2 years? Well, because they guarantee he will stay on for the 2017 season, which will give Billy the chance to improve his work ethic like the club has asked. If he improves to a satisfactory degree (maybe club intuition, or basic KPIs) then either a trigger for further years are enacted, or the club re-thinks the number one ruck position, at the very least. If Billy does not improve as they hope, then he has agreed to be traded to the most suitable club, in terms of St Kilda's desires.
I believe that this is a good compromise, as it gives Billy the extra chance, and also an extra year to prepare for possibly moving interstate, rather than being moved in this trade period. Furthermore, it helps the Saints because it'll either give him the kick in the arse that he needs, and therefore he'll become the gun ruckman that they believe he can, or it means that he will be contracted come trade time (more value) and is happy to go wherever.

Of course, this is all thrown out the window if he's traded within the next few weeks :D

I reckon Corr must be getting close to that level though. I can't see a spot for him any time soon.

Possibly. Maybe Saints only offer a future second rounder for both Steele and Corr and see what GWS does.

With all the academy picks and early draft picks GWS continue to have they probably need to trade out players like Corr.

If he has another year next year like this year and doesn't correct his laziness and drive, come trade time next year he will have less value than what he has now.

Hopefully not as Goddard was also considered to be a swingman that could play either end....

Great work mate!

I think this laziness is a bit ill formed & unfair. Billy, by his own admission, returned from the 2014 break in bloody ordinary condition (have smashing beers & big American food servings in his US trip).

He paid his penance & worked his arse off, which saw him have a break out 2015 season (which many supporters have forgotten about in light of Hickey's massive 2016).

I haven't heard anything out of the club or ITK's that Billy's laziness has returned. He's not the first player to overindulge in an off season either.

I thought about that, but found that it is not necessarily the case. Billy was the same "lazy" player that he is now when he dominated 2015. He is still more than capable of playing to a high level, however his attitude might rub the club the wrong way. Take someone like Dane Swan who had (arguably) the worst approach to training out of all modern footballers, yet he has 5 AA's, a Brownlow won with the most votes in a season (until Paddy this year), and an AFL MVP. Or take Ablett Jr, who was still playing decent football but was pulled up on his work ethic by all his teammates, before taking the next step and becoming elite.

Just because you're lazy doesn't mean you're bad; all it means is that you're not as good as you could be. If Billy doesn't improve his attitude, but plays a few 2015-esque games like we know he is easily capable of, then he will still have value.

You would imagine that's what the club are weighing up. Best case scenario, he overtakes Hickey, and reclaims the number one ruck role and Hickey becomes expendable. However, yeah worse case scenario he doesn't evolve and all of a sudden he's worth peanuts.

Slightly different story with midfielders, it's evident a lot of big men make the grade due to their physical attributes in comparison to Swan and Ablett who both have enormous amounts of natural ability.
