One thing I've been thinking in recent weeks is how a couple of the best teams this year had someone who was previously seen as a "mid" playing pretty much exclusively forward and doing exceptionally well there, in Clay Smith for WB, and Toby Greene for GWS (won their B&F and kicked 40+!) and after Armo did a good job playing a largely similar role at the end of 2014 (when he played mostly forward in the last 7 weeks and kicked 8 goals and had over 20 disposals each week, while still posting very good CP and clearance numbers), I've been wondering whether he could become our version of them in a couple of year's time- when others like Ross, Acres, Steele, Dunstan and co. have taken over the midfield.

He would bring the defensive pressure and tackling that Richo would love, he's strong overhead, is strong and uses his body well and cleverly in 1-on-1 marking contests, is as good a set shot for goal as anyone in the team, would be as good at roving off the packs as anyone and like he did at the end of 2014, would still probably be able to get his 20 possies a week- especially if he had occasional stints in the middle.

If he was able to average over 20 disposals, 5 tackles, about 10 CP's and a goal a game playing mostly forward for those weeks in the team that won the spoon, imagine what sort of numbers he could post now that he's taken his game to a new level overall since then (prior to his injury and/or lack of preseason-affected year this year) and in a team who's having perhaps 20 more inside 50's per game than we were then?

I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be able to kick 30, if not 35 goals, or even more if he was played pretty much exclusively forward and he'd probably average his 20 possies per game and bring great defensive pressure to the area.
Doesnt Weller Play that role for us though?

I hope we plan to rebuild as we originally did and not get caught up with what the Dogs did this year, we still have a few holes in our list that we need to fix. I think if we made top 8 next year, won a final in 2018, top 4 2019 and contend onwards from there would be a good goal. I just see Armitage getting overtaken in that time and I think we want 3 top 30 picks in this years draft, Longer has been put off the table so I just don't see who else we could trade that has value.

Armitage could easily play to that age but he already dropped off a bit this season, but he was playing with an injury so it'll be interesting to see how he goes.
I hope we start to push for the top 4 in 2018/19 and Armitage could easily be overtaken by a midfield of Acres, Steele, Ross, Gresham, Dunstan, Steven plus whoever we draft or trade in during that period. Bains said the other day we want 3 top 30 picks and he also ruled out trading Longer so I just see Armitage as being a player that has a bit of value and we could trade out to get those 3 top 30 picks.

Just my personal opinion and not so invested in it that I'm going to argue the toss. I think there's a 50% chance that Armo isn't I the best 22 by the end of 2017, if he is it will be as a defensive midfielder and his trade value will have plummeted.

with steele agreeing to come to our club, dempster re-signing and the delistings that have already occurred, we currently have the following spots free:
1 Senior spot
2 Rookie spots

The following players are out of contract:
Fisher
Shenton
Lee
Murdoch
Templeton

at a minimum i can see 2 of the 5 going. i dont think there will be any rookie upgrades. we could look at moving a player to the rookie list similar to what happened with saunders
Templeton and Lee are most likely going to be traded. Wait and see on Chips, depends what comes of the trade period. Shenton and Murdoch should get one more year to see if they can play regular senior footy in 2017 or they will be gone.

Make that ZERO senior spots now with Steele added. You're forgetting that Holmes is getting upgraded

Seb Ross has pushed Armo back down the pecking order and now Jack Steele could have the same affect. Unless an offer for him is great though , might be wise to keep him. I can see why people are suggesting it though

Of that group , I would move Murdoch on first , then Fisher , then Lee. Templeton and Shenton - keep them for depth- failing an offer for them.

So you're saying Armo dropped off a bit this year and at the same time acknowledging that he played injured all year :drunk:

With Port struggling to move on Hartlett & Lobbe & having major salary cap issues I think the time is right to offer a BIG contract to Ollie Wines & give Port our 2016 & 2017 first rounders with their 2017 second rounder coming back....
I would love Wingard... and I think we could get him cheaper. Wingard for #10

Wingard tanked his interviews to stay in Adelaide when he was drafted. He's one bloke that you could safely say will never leave unless it's to the Crows

I would forget about anyone decent falling out of port this year at least.

No doubt their cap is super tight- but the fact they clearly weren't willing to entertain losing hartlett for a discounted trade price... indicates they aren't going to do anything serious about restructuring their cap situation.

Trade/Draft hypothetical #2693:

So....

Steele comes to us for 46.
Armo to GC for 21/22*
Eli or Pierce for a late 2nd;

Then:

Pick 10 - Ollie Florent: 183cm 74kg midfielder.
Pick 21 - Shai Bolton: 177cm 67kg midfielder.
Pick 22 - Jordan Ridley: 192cm 79kg utility.
Late 2nd - Josh Begley: 187cm 87kg fwd/mid.

*ish

:dizzy:

I'm personally keen on Sam Reid. Will not cost much at all in trade. 3rd round even been thrown around. Forgotten swingman that can kick a goal and take a good grab.

Sydney awfully keen to free up some cash to increase offer to Mitchell.

If we could land Steele and Reid for next years 2nd & this years 3rd - take 10 to the draft - I'd be more than happy.

Is this armo thing just forum chat again or has there been something mentioned somewhere ?
Forum chat. Looking at our playeys to trade with currency, Steele trade, Armo being from Qld etc

I remember bringing up armo being traded a month back and everyone thought I was a genuine ****head now all of a sudden everyone wants to trade him
Dont know if it was for that reason[emoji12]

At least trading with Sydney has been smooth in the past. I'd imagine on Monday at Etihad , when it's St.Kilda's turn to visit Essendon's box , Ameet & Trout and co , will be tempted to keep walking and go get themselves a much deserved coffee.
