My concern with statements like this are that we end up like Port circa 2014. There is no 'missing piece'. We don't want to think we can play the same game, but with one extra player, and somehow win a GF. Our young players will develop, and we are definitely in a window. But thinking one extra player will make the difference is wrong imo. Doggies are proof that you don't need a magic 'fix'.

Not that a couple of quality mids wouldn't help though.
You have to admit our strategy is to source ready made mids ATM and then fall back to the draft is nothing comes of the trade scenarios. We are going for an instant fix for our midfield.

With those youngsters likely unable to help us in that tilt.

We are a couple of ready-made midfielders away from a flag - maybe just one if everything goes right for us.

We'll see.
I think there more issues there than just a lack of midfield depth.

Think port 2014.

Is any club gonna take one of the 12 spuds on the table down at the farm at Alberton?

Echoing most others on here, I think we NEEEED to get one of these guys in (Gibbs / Rockliff). I want both. If Rockliff comes cheap in terms of picks, you make it happen. If be happy with him being on 550-600k if we could convince him that he's coming here for a flag. If he doesn't want to do that, bad luck I guess.
Hopefully there's something last minute and out of (relatively) nowhere, like Menzel last year....except someone better
Otherwise we are standing still while teams like Melb and StK begin to make a charge, and we lose more ground to GWS.

Spot on.

GWS, WB, WC are going to be big threats obviously with Melb and St K only 1-2 years away.

We need 2 more key starting mids and Gibbs, Rockliff looks the best option…plus I'd add Smith into the mix as well. Anyone else who pushes up from underneath such as Atkins (not just pure wing), Milera, Menzel, Cameron, Greenwood, CEY, Hampton, Wigg would also be welcome additions to the supplementary rotations.

I think this primary midfield can compete and get enough quality ball to the forwards…Sloane, B Crouch, M Crouch, Rockliff, Gibbs, Smith, Atkins.

if we do nothing trade-wise we should still see Hampton and Doedee debut, and Milera play more games this year. This alone should add to our outside class (Doedee possibly freeing up Smith or Laird for more midfield time). We may also see Menzel.

Agree, or we could look at it this way we play 3 x 1st round picks plus a GWS zone pick. :D

The issue with that mentality is that clubs like GWS and Melbourne have far more of these guys with potential to come into their sides. I rate the guys you mentioned but Melbourne are thinking the exact same thing with getting more games into Petracca, Brayshaw, Salem, Oliver etc.

We can't just rely on growth from young players outweighing decline from others. We had a great year with some players over-performing and almost no injuries. Risky to sit on our laurels and expect that to keep happening.

I think Port's problem was every time they picked up that missing piece, it wasn't actually the right piece.

Ryder is the missing piece! - no, you've already got a ruckman, wait you're playing this guy as a forward? WTF? oh and he took drugs, whoops bye.

Dixon is the missing piece! - right, you finally got a key forward, just you picked the worst one you could find, can't play more than 15 games a season, body dodgy, hasn't really done anything with his career, and you're paying him how much? Why??

Meanwhile, their mids have either stagnated or gone backwards - to the point now where suddenly their top 4 list, no one wants to touch at trade week, and I certainly haven't heard the words 'destination club' bandied around.

Whereas Adelaide know - just like nearly everyone on here has worked out - exactly what their missing piece is: outside class. We did a very cheap 'missing piece' job last year when we got Hampton and Seedsman, now everything else looks right we're trying to get that exact missing piece by directly targeting someone who's perfect for it.

I think we're doing exaqctly the same thing as Port, except properly.

The irony over on the shit side of the fence is their posters are talking about us saying we all think Gibbs is the missing piece.

No way is Gibbs is the missing piece. No way would Gibbs presence in the semi final this year help us beat the Swans.

However, if the players that are waiting in the wings take their game to the next level, ie Hampton, Menzel, Seed, Milera and then bring in Gibbs along with a healthy playing group then yes this collectively is the missing piece. :rainbow:

it's not a mentality, it's a fact. We should bear it in mind when we think about our trading strategy.

Greenwood. I'm very bullish about him.

"Clicking Balls @clickingballs
@AFL, if Goldstein does go to WCE, what can North expect to get for him?

ASHLEY BROWNE: Not sure this deal happens, but a year off All Australian selection, North would ask for West Coast's first pick, which is pick 12 at this stage. "

So, Bryce Gibbs is worth more than Rory Atkins and pick 13, but Goldy is only worth pick 12?

Not sure Id trade 12 for Goldstein if I were them. He's better than sauce, but like sauce he's struggled to run out the year once hes picked up a niggle.

Goldstein games:
2010: 21
2011: 21
2012: 20+1
2013: 22
2014: 21+3
2015: 21+3
2016: 21+1
As far as rucks go, that's about as good as you can possibly get.
