The 2016 AFL Draft Booklet has:-
Final List Lodgement
Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at 2pm

I did post this ^ the other day in one or two places. So finally the lists are complete, it seems. I thought we had to take Isiah the other night if we were going to take him, what I read said the Nominated Academy players had to be taken straight after the Rookie Draft. Strange that Essendon have been able to take this chap as a Next Generation Academy player (Cat. B Rookie), but he wasn't one of the 6 players they nominated a few months back, according to the list I've seen.

So I guess we Officially Pass but what Changed since we Nominated Him to now. When we Passed?

Guess taking Brown,Kirby and Daicos there is not a Big Need for Him

I doubt passing on Isiah had anything to do with oversupply. It's a Cat B rookie spot & I'm guessing we thought he wasn't up to it.
The funny thing is, we only nominated him 60 days ago (end August).
So, I assume we thought he was worth a punt then...but not now.
We have a free hit via Cat B but passed...I don't really understand why.

Yes, he wasn't nominated by Essendon or the AFL (AFL nominations).
So how did that happen?
Doesn't appear to follow the rules?

We seem to only allocate our CatB spots to tall Basketball/Soccer types.
Shae Mc, Richmond, Cox & Wyatt.
We seem to be shying away from the Irish.
I think we should use our 3 Cat B spots every year.
Roll the dice, the more players we put through the system, the more chance of unearthing a gem.
No list clogging, small dollar investment, no salary cap...we have a development program.
Why don't we use it (3 spots)?

My guess would be we needed the time to process whether he was worth a Cat B spot.

What doesn't make sense to me, as some have suggested, is that we passed because we had filled that "need" during the draft.

Can you imagine that thought process?

Look as at the end of 2016 we don't have a first 22 crumber.
Let's draft some.
Ok now we've done that, what about this Isiah bloke for a Cat B.
Well he's definitely worth a spot, that's why we nominated him. Could be anything.
Better not get him, too many good footballers on the list in the one position, that also haven't made that possie their own. It's not like we could trade one down the track if we had a surplus, plus who gives a **** about some good press about drafting an indigenous kid from our remote Academy Zone.
Yeah, better pass.

It's certainly a strange one. Presumably Essendon was able to nominate him at some stage after that list was released by the AFL back in August (I think it was). Yet the article that contained that list of names said "The club will need to lodge relevant paperwork immediately after the rookie draft on November 28 to secure the multicultural or indigenous talent."

So why did we hear later on that day about Port Adelaide and West Coast taking an Academy player, but the Essendon player was (seemingly) taken a couple of days later? Puzzling stuff!!

A case of 'making it up as you go'.
I don't mind flexibility regarding Cat B recruiting (with not too many restrictions), but would just like to see a bit more transparency, so we can understand what's going on.

Rule and Essendon in the same post... oxymoron personified!

It would have been a nice story if we had picked him up, and I was certainly hoping we would. I guess we have to take into account that he was available to all of the other clubs for selection in the National & Rookie Drafts and he wasn't taken. Or perhaps he just felt he wasn't ready to make the move.
=========================================================================================
Someone pointed out the other day that his name did not appear on the list of players who had nominated:- http://www.afl.com.au/draft/draft-tracker

Perhaps this is telling, he may have withdrawn his nomination for whatever reason (I presume you can do this) and no-one could have selected him. A quick look shows that a couple of other players who were on the list of nominated Academy players were still on the AFL Draft Nominations list. One day (I hope) we'll find out what really went on!

Is every player on that list?
Was Bolton (our ex player) on the list?
The list would have a couple hundred names?
Dawes, etc would be on it.

Jye Bolton's name is there, though it has Werribee Tigers as his club, so it's probably the case that he nominated a year or so ago and he hadn't needed to nominate again. No sign of Dawes' name, perhaps recently delisted players don't have to nominate?

But names like Kayle Kirby, Mitch McCarthy, Ben Ronke (who were drafted) and Tristan Tweedie (not drafted) were there from the 2016 Next Generation Academy Nominations List.

Edit: While Dawes' name isn't there, those of Petrie and Schade were, so Dawes seemingly had to nominate if he wanted to get picked up, but didn't bother.

From AFL Draft Booklet 2016:

If I nominated for the NAB AFL Draft last year, do I need to nominate again?
No. Once you have nominated, your application remains valid for three years. You only need to nominate again if your last nomination was lodged in, or before, 2013 or you are no longer on an AFL Primary or Rookie list.

I am no longer on a Primary or Rookie list of an AFL Club but want to continue playing AFL football. What do I do?
You will have to re-nominate for the Draft.

New or Expired (after three years) Draft Nomination Form Lodgement
Friday, November 18, 2016, 2pm
Note: Nominations expire after three years and these names are automatically deleted from the database. Players in this category must renominate for the National Draft.

Delisted Primary List

Draft Nomination Form Lodgement
Friday, November 18, 2016, 2pm
Note: Delisted Primary List Players must stipulate if they are either entering the National Draft or if the nomination is to be held over for the Pre-Season Draft (thus by-passing the National Draft).

Non-Retained Rookie Players
Draft Nomination Form Lodgement
Friday, November 18, 2016, by 2pm
Note: Rookie-Listed Players not retained by their Club must renominate for the National Draft to be eligible for the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts. If a non-retained rookie does not nominate for the National Draft, he will not be eligible for the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts.

Ok tks.
So maybe he did decide to withdraw??
That would explain his non selection.
As another poster previously stated "we may never know".

It's very possible. Yet an article in NT News on the day of the Rookie Draft mentioned Farrell-Nelson as an outside chance of selection:- Tennant Creek goalsneak Isiah Farrell-Nelson and Nightcliff hardman Patrick Taban are other outside hopes.

So I'm really not sure. I do hope we find out eventually what went on!

This.

He probably wasn't perceived to be a best 22 or even depth player.

If they can still sign him they may just be waiting for school to finish to get him down to the Holden Centre for a couple of weeks preseason training to get a closer look at him.

I don't think he goes to School. He is playing in the NTFL I think

I'll take your word for it Dave though I thought a poster mentioned that he'd moved to Darwin for school. That may have been the other kid coming through next year or the year after.

You're thinking of Liam Holt-Fitz.

Several days ago it said this in an article on the AFL website "CLUB lists have been finalised for 2017 and a number of trends and anomalies have emerged."

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-12-03/total-list-breakdown-all-the-key-stats

Yet this bloke has just been snapped up by the Bulldogs. Which is puzzling! I thought the "rule book" spelled things out clearly, with the lists meant to be finalised last Wednesday. Tweedie was not nominated by the Bulldogs but by Hawthorn. Seemingly (while the chance for clubs to add players that they themselves nominated may have passed) they are still able to list those nominated by other clubs or the AFL, which is what has happened here.

Senior and rookie lists have to be finalised by a certain date. From memory though I think a Cat B rookie can be signed at any point given they're outside the main playing list.
