I'm sure that's the reason he does it. He's big on being showy in the gym. Wears beats headphones. Growls at anyone who comes near him. Shouts "****" while lifting non huge amounts.
Also very openly admits to being on roids and very loudly talks about all the women he ****s

And, despite a number of more hardcore bodybuilding gyms in the area that would suit him better, he chooses to go to a gym where he's more likely to be the biggest guy there

Not even close to biggest. His diet must be garbage. His lifts aren't huge and he has made absolutely zero gains in the 18 months I've been there.

Haha well that's gone from a little sad to legitimately sad

Sounds like one of the reasons I dont bother with a gym
wtf is wrong with some of these people???

if you have to brag....youre full of crap imo
If you need to make noise, and peacock to get attention, the attention isn't deserved
When I used to go to ENRG blokes would train quietly but get people staring because of how big their lifts were, not because they screamed until people looked
I've spotted a bloke benching 150, the only noise from him was heavy breathing
Shut the **** up with your screaming while deadlifting 80

Yeah there's a middle-aged guy who stinks (BO) who pops into my gym occasionally who grunts on his 100kg 1/4 rep back squats after zero warm up.
he then wants to chit chat while I'm ignoring him and just getting on with my workout - I don't even take a phone to the gym because it's just workout time for me. Freaking annoying.

I'll admit that on pushing exercises I may hiss a little if I'm pushing out the last rep or two in a set, certainly not loud though.

Old mate roids walks in today. Headphones on walks over to a bench drops his shit next to it, the shouts "let's do this mother ****er" and proceeds to bench 90kgs

Trainer who trains in a specific style I won't name, since it'll cause drama, decides peak time is when he should be training. Doing swinging pull ups on the rack in using, shaking the rack as I'm trying to rerack, and dropping 60kgs from overhead in the walkway between the stretching area and weights room

A campaigner at my gym was doing bench press. So big deal, nothing wrong with that.

However the dick was using another bench to prop his feet up to do the benching. ffs. Now if there were many benches laying around to do this, I couldnt give a flying fck. But seriously what a selfish tool. Was tempted to remove the bench when he was lifting.

Didnt suprise me, he was an old guy and as usual an overweight guy.

I can maybe understand if someone is recording their results between sets, but generally most campaigners on their phone are either facebooking/texting/selfies while at the gym.

On most occasions its the overweight and unfit people playing with their phones during a workout.

Chick at my gym decides to do aerobic exercises in the weights area which already is a confined space. There is plenty of areas in the gym to do this shit.

I mean serioualy WTF.

I mean what can you say? Admittedly if she was hot I would be happy and applaud and say thank you, but she is a plastic 45+ year old freak of nature.

I use my phone between sets, half to record my workouts, half because i train alone, and dont have wireless headphones so cant listen to music, and feel awkward looking around the gym while im resting.

I use my phone on occasions as well, sometimes my work phone to get through work emails or my personal phone to read big footy. As long as you aren't taking 3-4 minutes between sets in busy times i don't see the difference between resting their for 60 seconds just twiddling my thumbs or using my phone, 60 seconds rest is 60 seconds.

That's basically it, my max rest is about 3 minutes and that's only if I fail to hit a rep range
What's it matter what people do between sets when resting, as long as they're still doing it because they're resting and not because they're trying to finish a level on candy crush

Seriously, you couldn't make this stuff up
No wonder the fitness industry is full of broscience and dumbasses
From a friend's FB (and an actual PL coach with a 2x be squat/dead and 1.5 x bw bench as a female)
"When you can't pass a Cert 4 because they ask you specifically to make a powerlifting program but you're expected to prescribe 5x5 at over 90% , and the words "squat, bench and deadlift" are too specific, and "push" and "pull" are preferred. What do I say for squat day? "Knee bendage"? "

Oh god
Cert 4 should not be asking for anything powerlifting related. Period.

Would you ask the kid behind the counter at mini golf how to become a pro player?

Out of the best 20-30 powerlifting coaches in Australia, I reckon there's only one or 2 with a Cert 4. A few have ex science, a few more have just done the weekend S&C cert for insurance purposes, the other dozen have no formal qualifications lol
The best part is they require the student to (poorly) program exercises they haven't been shown how to teach or even perform correctly
I don't know if I've posted this opinion here, but I honestly believe the minimum education level for an actual personal trainer should be bachelor level. With a cert 4 or diploma in "exercise instruction" for people working on the gym floor

A few interesting points you raised.

Im just tired of guys who stink at gyms, ffs buy a few outfits because its obvious you are wearing the same clothing multiple days in a row. It would be impossible to police fairly, but I wish gyms would tell gym users that they stink and to do something about it. Ironically a PT at the gym has one of the worst cases of BO I have come across.

Grunting, can piss off a lot of people and can also intimidate a few people.

Chit Chat. I have noticed old guys tend to do a lot of chats between sets. Not only that but if they happen to chat to you instead of a quick 45s to 1m comment, they break out into a long winded story. ffs I try to have as an absolute max, 45s rest between sets.

No phone. Period. FFS Going to the gym for me is a peaceful enjoyable experience where I can get away from everything in the world. I find it relaxing to not be disturbed or have the need to surf the net, facebook or message anyone.

Interesting. One thing I like about not having the phone is that I like to not only rest my body between sets but also my mind. I find it very healthy mentally to just relax there.

I usually spend my 45s rest break checking out the incorrect form of guys doing weights. With that said I do admire the guys/girls that have great technique when performing exercises.
