There are 14 or 15 songs that I never would've listened to were it not for the process and this round's 'no theme'.

Despite the complaints, I've enjoyed listening to this batch of tunes. Probably the best playlist we've had since the 'Black performers' round. Even the modern-day rehash/ripoff punk tunes (which I normally despise) all had good riffs & great sections. I don't know why anyone was expecting to be blown away by our selections - we're still the same bunch of twats with questionable taste & limited knowledge. Not like we had Henry Wagons or Jarvis Cocker picking the songs for this round.

You said that picking a song to fit the theme is "part of the challenge", but what's so challenging about using Google, or scrolling through your music folder using a search filter ? (fun thing to do, but there'll be further opportunities to do that in the next few rounds)

Some people say they give votes according to the theme, but that's bullshit. e.g. Iron Maiden's 'Number Of the Beast' won the Talking Blues round. It has a 20 second bible reading from a Vincent Price imposter - the intro is superfluous to the song itself. It was probably the only song from that round which didn't really fit the theme. All the other noms had spoken word sections in the song, or spoken-singing, which was the host's intention. ('Rime of the Ancient Mariner' would've been a better fit from the Iron Maiden catalog.)

People don't vote for songs which best fit the theme - they vote for the songs they like best. The theme just gives us a chance to pick on 1 or 2 songs each round and argue over whether they should've been allowed. So for this round, we don't have those arguments. No great loss.

I like the free hit in terms of being able to nom songs that I haven't been able to fit into any themes but I've also discovered a lot more good stuff through searching for songs to fit a theme than through noms. 6 of one...

Yeah, me too. All I'm saying is that 90% of songs in every round fit the theme to whatever degree. So we ignore/billy the ones which don't fit and then vote for the songs we like best. The theme simply serves as a valve.

Yeah, just paraphrasing. It's how people take it when you question their music taste. It's like you're saying they suck, even though you're not. Our music taste is part of who we are, precious to us, personal, more so than our favourite movie or tv show.

I don't mind having a bit of a barney over music & shit noms. I sorta wish we had more of it in this thread instead of being polite (or having personal goes at each other). Illinois Nazi used to give his scathing reviews for every song and piss people off. We'd bite back and give him shit for being an ignoramus, etc…

The greatest justification someone can have for nominating a song (whore or virgin) is getting the votes from the establishment.

If someone says that song sucks and they get the votes, isn't that 'pie in the face' of the person who said it sucks? Why the need to get upset?

Back your song up and justify it but posting 'a crap unknown song' to avoid the horror of whoring a song isn't (IMO) what this song contest should/could/is about.

This won't go down well with the like of Loonerty and Ulahoopski but I'm going to have my say.
