Nick Vlastuin set to move into Richmond’s midfield in 2017 in team shake-up

One of his earliest ever games was when we belted West Coast at Subiaco back in 2013.
Kicked 3 goals.
Rising star nomination.
Before you know it, he's playing back pocket.
This bloke captained Vic Metro as an inside midfielder.
It's about time, seriously.

Playing back pocket sums up hardwicks seven going on nine year reign,

Who remembers Astburys first game ,recruited as a forward, kicks three in his first game, then sent to the backline.

IMO. Astburys Mark prop game is suited to the forward line, not to try and speed up the backline, but I have digressed from the topic at hand, vlastuin was recruited as a midfielder come forward, showed something in his first game then vanished to the back pocket, and only after new assistants are brought in is he now considered to be a midfielder again.

Hmmmm, not sure what this says

I've heard one of the reasons he does it is because he believes playing in the backline really helps them develop an understanding of the game.. Not sure why he persists with it though.

Yep .... and the most promising kid to walk through the door since Dustin Martin in late 2009 is the ONLY ONE not to have gone within a bull's roar of the backline.
C'mon down Daniel Rioli.
There's a lesson there.
Will be an absolute gun as long as we don't try and convert him in to something he obviously is not.

Digressed but an outstanding point.
We have Astbury and Griffiths a***-backwards.

I forgot about young jayden Short as well first 3 games 6 goals before being banished to the backline, goals are not a KPI in this coaches book

Goals aren't a KPI..What a load of rubbish..

Pretty sure he knows the most basic fundamental of football..team that kicks the most goals wins...

IMO, Griffiths is too unreliable a kick for goal to play KPF. He is a better kick to position. I think, however, that he and Astbury will remain where they are.

Go ahead.
I still say if they are taking steps to "build his tank" he was not ready to play on-ball./
And I still say, for our team and in terms of getting the best out of Vlastuin, he is suited to the half back role.
We just went and got two new on-ballers and drafted another in Graham, his on-ball role will be limited.

I agreed with you 100%, you clown.

So did Matthew Knights, although he had the ability to see everything 3 seconds before it happened. I don't think vlas has that ability. Look forward to seeing what he does though.
Knights also retired about 15 years ago and got split open by a little greasy wog .

says a dual coleman medallist who lines up on the wing, did you miss our potent forward line last year?

Strange one to criticise, since Short looks far better in defence and we now have a plethora of small forward options who are better than him.

wasn't a criticism at all, it was an observation, about the concepts prevailing at the club. defence defence defence and if we jag agoal along the way its all good.

I'd love to dispute this...
I can't remember a game when cotchin, Martin and Deledio started in the centre square together. Problem we had with lids was only had one of him
If we had more than one lids...
Wonder if number 2 lids would have liked playing with number 1 lids...

I think the success of Vlaustin in the midfield depends greatly upon the success of Short and Markov. Our need for another inside midfielder was less urgent than our need for a small lock down defender. Losing Morris and Houli (for a time) last year meant we had a massive whole down back that, at that stage, we had very few players who could fill it. Flossy could and did. As the year progressed though Short and Markov stepped up and showed they had the ability, if not the consistency of performance, to play the role. This is what has enabled Flossy to make a move into the midfield rotations.

I think Flossy will be an excellent addition around stoppages this year. He has the ability to win his own ball and is poised with the ball in hand. I always feel comfortable when Fllosy has the ball that he will find a target. I don't think the endurance talk is anything more than the extra load any player would need to undertake moving from the backline to the midfield.

So if I was Vlaustin, I'll be doing everything I can to help Markov and Short succeed down back

I've always seen him as a midfielder.
Like all midfielders, he no doubt 'put up with' playing in the backline and has developed his game.
But like all midfielders, must be chomping at the bit about getting into the guts!

(Cue person who says he played u18s in the backline!!)
