No unfortunately. I know that our offer is fairly close to North over 5. The issue is that north will guarantee 9 for the same cash and we won't.
Do you know if the club has any interest in Rocky ?

Confident player contract management is in good hands at the club. We have very smart people running the club right now and should all relax and enjoy the ride.

Exciting times as we build momentum.
Jelly won't choose North over Saints imo.
He will almost definitely choose North over Saints IF he leaves GWS

I would go to 7.5m over 5 years for Kelly if it means getting him to the club. If we are prepared to offer it to Fyfe then we should be prepared to offer it to Kelly who is younger, fitter historically and in much better form.

We should offer anything that gets him within reason. I think the club are smart enough to do that. A 9 year deal is no big deal IMO. In 9 years he maybe on a wage not far from the players average.

If the player contract management job comes up at the club by any chance....

Please don't apply for it :$
I would however be happy to be a referee though ;)

I wouldn't have any issue with offering him $6mil over 6. Maybe even a touch more than $6mil.

So the gamble from a financial POV would be that if he gets a career-ending injury within those 6 years if he chooses us he is only bloody rich, instead of a bit more bloody rich! Or that if he does play the 9, but his form doesn't warrant another contract of a mil a year after 6, he maybe gets $1mil less over the next 3 than he would have if he'd gone to North. Again making him bloody rich, but not quite as bloody rich as he otherwise could have been (pending other things like marketing allowances and so-on).

On the other hand, if he plays to his potential there is more scope to make more money with us if his form warrants a bigger contract after the first 6 years.

Given that he'll be rich either way, I doubt it will come down purely to money or contract length. It will come down largely to which club he would prefer to go to from a football and lifestyle perspective and so-on.

Where will he be happiest and the best chance of winning a premiership while becoming bloody rich.

I feel like we'd probably need to offer him a touch more than 5 years though. We need to be a bit more brave than that.

Whatever we are offering to Fyfe, give it to Kelly instead and sprinkle a little something extra on it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, will be better than Bontempelli (if he isn't already)

I highly doubt we'd get him for the same p.a. As what North was offering for 9 years. I think we'd need to offer 1.2 or go a long contract

Considering that we have been burnt by players with injuries in the past I don't see a problem with going 5 years instead of 9. 9 years is a hell of a long time. For most of the deal he will fall under this new CBA and it would at least take up a considerable amount of cap.

I want him as much as you and the next person. I just don't want stupidity to arise on the term and would prefer 5 years and renegotiate in good faith come renewal time

I just think the family loyalty and growing up a passionate roo fan will be hard to overturn for us.

But for some reason I've been told not to discount us and that we are well in the race.

This. He will choose north if its a similar contract. We need to trump them with more money over less years. We can afford it, it's no issue. Just get it done with whatever he wants.

$6m over 5.

Worst case for jelly is he never plays past 6 years and he's dudded himself out of $3m

More likely though is that after 6 years he gets another 4 or 5 year contract for @ $1.5.-.$1.7m a year.

Bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush. Hopefully he backs himself in

Haha I know it's not what we are going to do but if we have the money for Fyfe, and if it's going to take Fyfe money to get Kelly, then I would pay Kelly.

That said, I think we can get Dusty cheaper than both in terms of contract and trade value.

You don't have to see the problem. Kelly may though. He could be injured in round one of his first year and we would still have to pay for 4 years and 21 weeks if we gave him 5 years. If it takes 9 years to get him and the price is right then get him if we are able to.

Give Kelly 1.1 over 5 and forget about Fyfe. Give 700-750 to rockliffe as a fa and then go to the draft with 1 of our first rounders.

Fyfes form this year barely warrants 1m let alone 1.5..... If he can't improve his form I'd be very concerned over throwing this kind of money at him. That's before we even start looking at weather he is even going to be better than jelly in 2 years

this board if we get Jelly Kelly or Fyfe..

Which is exactly why we should be throwing up a bigger contract than North. If it's only 5 years, fair enough, but make the contract offer big enough that it will be worth it for him. We've got the money there and I'm really not liking our chances of landing Fyfe now that Freo are performing well.

So we're not that keen on Whitfield or is he the fall back?
Surely if they lose Kelly they won't have a bar of trading the contracted Whitfield? They'll only look to trade him if they need to do it to free up cap space to keep Kelly. The last thing that'd want to do is lose both of them!

9 years is a long time. Aaron Hamill had a 5 year deal, played 2 of them did his knee, never to return.

It seems to be the world we live in now though.
My only thoughts are that maybe you can put in a clause about being capable of playing X games a year.

We can't go overpaying Kelly; it creates a burden on the TPP not unlike overpaying Fyfe (although, with less risk due to no injury history). If North want to give him a ridiculous offer, then let them. All we can do is offer what we believe to be fair for him and our club, and then look at all other opportunities while waiting for his decision.

It'd be like scrapping over the last Snickers in a supermarket, with the other bloke offering $10 to the shopkeeper. Just because you want it, doesn't mean it's worth paying $12 - just buy a Mars for $2, a handful of peanuts for $4, and use the rest to grab anything else you could want.
