The compo is irrelevant.

If we want him to stay (and why wouldn't we ??) then we put a fair & reasonable offer on the table and then he signs on.

Our list management decisions in relation to key players should never be predicated by what compensation may be available.

Why never? If we get offered something great for a certain player we should definitely consider it regardless of if we were planning to do it.

Look at the Judd trade. We had no intention of letting Kennedy go but when Judd was on the market we had to.

The compo would be tied to a player/players that would be gained against it.

Of course it is relevant. What if Judd was on the end of that compo @ pick #3? Think man.........think. :)

Too many supporters think with their heart rather than their head.

AFL is cruel business at times and smart decisions have to be made regardless of the emotional impact they may cause.

If we end up with a Judd type player out of it everyone will get over it really quick anyway.

the problem that everyone seems to be forgetting is that Kreuz is an unrestricted free agent. we would not be able to weigh up offers and determine what band would be offered. if the dogs offered $x he can just take the offer and then the afl later informs us what compensation that we get. we do not gave a role to play should we let it go on that far and do not get a chance to match if we dont like the compo. surely we sort it prior to that and i assume matty would like the same to happen.

Something, something, Gibbs, something?

Gibbs being part of the trade landscape makes a lot of sense if we are serious about Schache but it also opens up the thoughts of where Casboult would fit in to the short-term plan if Schache was secured ??

McKay, Schache & possibly Weitering as the taller options would, in my opinion, mean we wouldn't have as much need for big Levi apart from his overall bulky frame in the clinches.

Certainly creates an interesting but pleasant conundrum.

We have renewed interest in Schache

That will make for an interesting trade period. How do we get Schache and Hopper in? Cant see how we get them both without compromising this years draft, already down a second round pick and next year's draft? And what of his managers reportedly seeking 700K a season? We will have some unhappy players on our list.

I hope we don't go after Schache unless it's a real bargain. Wouldn't look good to bring in Schache on $750,000 p/y and 2 first rounders whilst guys like Doc, Cripps and others who have bought into the system and been there since the ground floor are earning much less. Would send a terrible message to the group.

Let SOS take care of Brisbane and GWS.
I am drooling over Lever. Imagine our Backline.
Defence wins premierships.

They were the old days and even then, without kicking goals you're heading into Ross Lyon territory.

Forget Lever as he may make us 2% better. A key mid maybe 5% and a key quality forward, maybe somewhat more.

What you have outlined is a scenario I have mulled over many times in the past.

I cannot see Schache being given $700K when he was picked up at #2 behind Weitering at #1 who is way in front of him on performance. It wouldn't surprise me if he was enticed over on a staggered contract with the main carrot being a serious chance to play finals and win premierships in the not too distant future.

He cannot be paid more than what Weitering is currently being paid, it would be far too disruptive to the overall camaraderie & harmony being developed amongst the playing group.

I'd rather us not give up 2 firsts for Schache. He is not quite proven for mine so there is a decent risk. I look over at the Pies and the Treloar deal. It's not looking so great now with his groin issues. Right now they have an average player (due to groin restrictions) and they paid two first (within top 10). The cost is so high.

If the price is one first round pick (say pick 5) then that sounds fine. A bit like Docherty; he wants to come to us and leave the Lions so they lose out on some value. It's all about price.

I understand KPFs come at a premium...I just don't think Carlton have to play with the Lions if the price is exhorbitant. Two first rounders is a killer these days.

We are progressing well on buying players under market value. I say keep to that plan and take aim for a Hopper type who is showing decent form but fits down the pecking order at a very strong club where players might not be better than him but just had a 2-4 year head start.
