Dependable Rowe continues to grow
Rowe held Pie key forward Jesse White scoreless and to just three marks on a cold and sometimes rainy night that was admittedly tailor-made for defenders.

After playing 10 games in his debut season last year primarily as a forward/ruckman, the South Australian has moved to defence in 2014 and not missed a match, forming a highly effective partnership with fellow key defender Michael Jamison.

Good find after we moved Rowe back. McKay and our players are a big wrap for his attitude and his intensity.

Rowe's rise at Carlton continues as three veterans step down from leadership group

SAM ROWE's remarkable emergence at Carlton has continued, with the key defender added to a streamlined Blues leadership group.

Rowe, 27, joins existing leadership group members Marc Murphy, who will continue as captain, Michael Jamison, Bryce Gibbs and Lachie Henderson.

Rowe had played just 10 AFL games before last season, having failed to play a senior match in two seasons on the Sydney Swans' rookie list (2006-2007) and then spending his first season at Carlton (2012) fighting – and ultimately beating – testicular cancer.

But after breaking through to play 10 games as a hard-working forward in 2013, the former Murray Bushranger reinvented himself as a close-checking key defender last season.

After missing the Blues' opening game of 2014, Rowe played the next 21 matches in a row and formed a highly effective partnership with fellow key defender Jamison.

The extent of Rowe's newfound importance to Carlton was underlined when he finished fifth in the Blues' best and fairest award.

Rowe's experience not pigskin deep

"I just try to have a crack with everything that I do. The coaches said, 'That's all we want from our leaders, just keep setting the example that you've been setting'," Rowe said.

"We're really trying just to take the club forward and get a lot of sustained success. We're all on the same page.

"I'm fairly bullish about our prospects. I think we're not all that far away from having a bit of success.

"And I'm going to do everything I can to be successful. I'll do everything I can for this club to be successful."

What a great story, so good to see Sam Rowe in the leadership group, this is exctly what a good culture is all about!!!

Good to see Sam getting another run against the Swans.
Hasn't had a great NAB cup campaign and copped a bit of criticism but reading back through this thread it's not long since he was widely respected in our back half. He's looking extremely fit and lean and hopefully close to getting some touch back.
One positive so far; it was evident in the * game that he has formed a close playing relationship with Weitering already. If Sam can play to his potential we'll have a nice trio of talls down back.

Terrible news for Sam. :(

Wishing Sam all the best and a speedy recovery.
