He's had patches of value, no doubt, however he's not a reliable kick for goal and is a better KPD by a fair margin. I certainly wouldn't pick him for a kick after the siren to win the game.
I disagree. Hes been quite a good kick for goal. He just had a horrible miss at a critical time last thursday

I wouldn't have minded hartlett being dropped. But it's hardly meltworthy.

If we stuff this game and there's no change, then I'll join the melts

Yeah that's reasonable. It's the hint of "that pattern" that is triggering folks' past traumas going all the way back to the infamous late Choco era's alleged "Gold Pass Syndrome".

We've had one day extra break over the Hawks. Minus Wingard, with Young mis-firing, Amon, Sam Gray, Impey up and down, the blindingly obvious "in" Gus coming off a year out of the game with two days less break than the Hawks, and with any AFL-listed Hawks coming in from the VFL having had the full week off for the inter-state league game, the fitness question over Eddy, plus a sense we ought to be able to get over the Hawks as we are, I get a sense of "don't take risks" about things. This week. Just adding up a bunch of individually small factors to guess what may have impacted selection. Call it rationalization but right or wrong it's reasoning rather than emoting.

Next week at selection though there should be a far harsher eye cast across the table, no matter what. Essendon at Jihad off their bye. Wingard in obviously, and with the doubt/unknowns on Young, Impey, Amon, Gray, AhChee let alone poor Matty White we must find out quickly if Gus and Palmer - at different bookends of their careers - are up to the level. I don't mean experiments, I mean changes with a decent probability of making us better if they come off.

Speaking of experiments, IMO Eddy will never come in for Young, and is not up to coming in for Westhoff or Trengove, not the way Ken plays those roaming, mixed roles. Maybe just to practice a different sort of flexibility, a plan B or C if you like, we try a bit more structural predictability one day... like the simple "battering ram"... Dixon roams more and more up the ground and Eddy more the "stays at home" fwd at the expense of one of Westhoff or Trengove.

I'm not sure Eddy is the answer. He's kind of stuck somewhere between being a Monfries type and a key forward, at least at AFL level.
So to me it's either play Gus, who can work his way further up the ground and back, or play a genuine tall such as Howard or Marshall.

I think I see why Ken would make a good assistant coach. Doesn't have to make the hard calls and drop players, but can be the one who puts his arm around the ones the coach with balls does drop to comfort them.

I guess you have to let Ken coach, I wonder how much influence he has on actual selections. if Bass was coach he'd be less forgiving i'd say. No option other than to win by plenty.

I'm not convinced we are at the stage where we should be shuffling the deck chairs and bringing in speculative young players, but rewarding consistently strong SANFL form is a must. On that note, Eddy and particularly Monfries (who is a proven performer at AFL level) should have made the team by now.
