By announcing the team early Ken is going for the 'on the front foot' attitude rather than ducks and drakes. He obviously has faith in the same players and surely the rest of the selection panel does too? until we lose a stinker it looks as if he's backing the same blokes in no matter what's talked about on here, trouble with that is I don't think your keeping players on notice, may as well hand out the Brasso for those gold plated cards.....

Trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is a sign of cognitive dissonance.

It doesn't matter this week though, unless we lose. A win will just paper over the cracks.

I'm beginning to think the problems are deeper.

How motivated would you be as a middle-tier player when you're making significantly less cash than Hamish Colquhoun and Matthew Meikelobbe?

Would have thought that was obvious after Round 1. How about this: "run out at least 80% TOG of an AFL game and cover nearly as much ground as Westhoff or Trengove or the justly-maligned Young for that matter".

Young IMO was lucky that Wingard was out last week as well as Gus underdone so let's park the Eddy-for-Young idea, he's at least third cab off that rank.

I'm not a selector's backside as I've admitted many times but I suspect for a key position player it doesn't matter if it's Eddy or frigging Lobbe in, you need to suggest who he's going to replace, and make a case for the role, not just the SANFL form. SANFL form ought to be table stakes and Eddy has that in spades. Good on him. But alone it's not enough IMO unless you're talking about a flanker or midfielder coming in with a lot of support around them.

Theory: goals at SANFL level for his type of forward don't predict goals at AFL level in recent years. Someone go dig into the stats.
yeah sanfl goals are only 4ponits you

Gray should expect to be tagged!

This is genius! Instead of complaining about umpires, he has got them watching the tag!

I still would rather he complained though.

"There were a couple players who were a little bit down, but you're always going to get that," Hinkley said

"Over the course of the team, I thought we were reasonably consistent albeit that we perhaps we didn't have a couple of players who stood out as easily as Dangerfield, Selwood and Duncan."

So Hinkley acknowledges that certain players weren't playing up to standard, but because the team plays well as a unit, he's not willing to make the team better by dropping those players?

Gotta be consistent, right? Consistently mediocre. Let's not push for elite standards. Let's not strive to get better.

Get it through your head, Ken - your old bum chums at Geelong are ******* RAT SHIT. I can't believe we lost to those clowns, and the fact that we did shows that that consistent performance was ******* consistently terrible.

Every time we lose it's the same ******* thing - teams push their defence back, waiting for us to bomb it long like we inevitably do because you continually pick dumb players like Sam Gray and Aaron Young as your high forwards who are either too stupid, too lazy or too small to lead up to the ball and take a contested mark.

But nah, let's give the same idiots another opportunity to **** us over by being a 'little down', instead of playing guys who would have been excited to be back part of the team. Because 'you're always going to get that.'

so this is what happens when Janus' assertions about us being premiership contenders fall apart. team selection. blow smoke up ken, the players and structure for 6 weeks until we drop a close one to the 3rd placed cats and suddenly it's Aaron young in for Chad Wingard that cost us the season.

this board, seriously.

Who says I don't think we're still premiership contenders? Or that that season is shot? Those are your words, not mine.

My problem with his selections is that he doesn't want to improve the shape and team defence by playing better players and consistently picks perennial underperformers like Young who haven't fired a shot all season. Did you know that Young is having a worse season than Monfries did in 2015 when he was dropped twice?

I said in other threads that my problem isn't that we are miles away, it's that we dropped a game we could have EASILY won had we been a bit more braver at selection, but it seems like the Matt White selection (that didn't come off) spooked the selection committee into playing safe instead of taking a risk.

We should have wiped the floor with the Cats. Look how poorly we played for the majority of the game and we almost won.

Aaron Young for Chad Wingard wasn't the problem. A lazy high forward that is just marking time before he is replaced by a damaging mid/forward was the problem. Monfries would have been hungry to perform because he would have enjoyed being back with the boys on a road trip and would have made Mackie accountable for an opponent, since Mackie would know how dangerous Gus can be if he gets off the chain.

I think we are in this season up to our eyeballs and we need to be picking the best players in each position every week.

I don't think it's that complicated. You drop players who are playing poorly. Young and HH are playing poorly. It doesn't matter about contracts, it's just about dropping players who aren't up to scratch. We have a healthy list. Lots of replacements older or younger. Whatever you want. Just drop players who are playing badly. We are contenders this year. There are no outstanding teams. We shouldn't be settling for mediocre to poor performances.

19 touches, 9 marks, 3 (should have been 4) shots on goal. Yep putrid garbage. Lets drop him for eddy who's done nothing to show hes capable of performing at afl standard.

Lol 'shots at goal'. You're not giving those who have suggested we're rewarding mediocrity much relief by suggesting we should keep Westhoff in because of how many behinds he kicked.

You know why Eddy has done nothing to show he's capable of performing at AFL standard? Because we won't ****ing pick him!

Why did we sign Brett Eddy??!?

To play in the SANFL for a couple of seasons while we developed our other talls. He be on our list for 3 years and never play another AFL game and he's a great pick up. If he gets back in the Power side that's great as well.

Can't like this enough.

In case we got injuries to Dixon Westhoff and Trengove.

Hopefully he has shown enough to the coaches to give him another preseason though and get up to AFL standard and genuinely compete for a spot next season.

No you cannot bank on a SNAFL player to come up & plug holes. Especially when he has 2 odd AFL games. I/we all thought that when Shultz retired Eddy was his replacement full stop .. Now hyperthetically if Shultz was fit & firing today who then would make way ? Could Shultz & Dixon play in the same team ? I think Shultz & Eddy are very similar players.

A fit Schulz is a much better and fitter player than Eddy if for nothing else simply being in the AFL System as a full time professional for several years.

What would you have done to plug holes in an emergency situation where all our tall forwards are fit? Got a VFL OR WAFL player instead? Eddy was a cheap option already settled and living in Adelaide that is capable of scoring goals but lacking a fitness base to play out AFL games.

Not on the same planet. A fit Jay would have been pretty comfortable with Charlie in the side. Charlie is starting to show a little of Jays commitment now I think but that's another story.

You are 'kin lucky kern. Was not coming to the game in protest and then my mate from Perth messages me and say he is coming over, late decision, to the game... have not seen him for years. ffs.

We severely underrated Jay when a lot of those early comparisons were made. A star of this club.

My point really was to give Eddy more opportunity to build up to a full time AFL player. You're not talking about a teenager here. He's in his prime right now. Before his knee reconstruction he was on an AFL list. He's no stranger to the game & would be more than able to fill Shultz's position. My question still stands. Who would give way if Shultz was still on our list ? Then that player should give way for Eddy.

No they shouldn't because Eddy isn't fit enough!

But a fit in form Schulz would probably replace Young. We may well see a fit and in form Monfries take his spot in a week or two anyway.

The consensus weakest links are Young Ach and S.Gray. This is the thing and why I personally don't take sanfl form too seriously. How is the SANFL form of those 3? I just not sure form in the SANFL means much and maybe they get more idea during the week at training as to who adds value.
