Restricted free agents were 8 years at one club, unrestricted were 10 years. I guess they all become unrestricted at 8 years now, which is the end of the year they turn 26 at the earliest?

Any players lost through free agency resulted in a compensation pick if the net loss was greater than the net gain. The only difference with restricted free agents was that their original club had the right to match the offer and force the player to request a trade if they really wanted to play elsewhere.
Ahhh ok so basically this just prevents clubs from playing hardball and matching to force a trade then.

Probably better that way to be honest, players can move freely to their club of choice (it's up to them whether they wish to move via a trade or not now).

It's weird, because when Mayne left Freo to join the Pies, Freo got a 2nd round compo pick for him but I'm pretty sure there's been others who've left and their previous clubs haven't received compensation.
I don't know where this has come from but it's never been a thing. Compensation has never excluded UFA's
ah, right.
wasn't sure. i thought they were free to leave and the clubs got nothing for UFA's.

Yep.

The net loss vs. net gain thing is the reason why some clubs haven't been given compensation. If you get a player from one club and lose an equivalently rated player (based on the AFL's magic algorithm) to another club then you end up with a net loss of 0 and don't get a compo pick.

Fair enough, it might even stop ludicrous contract offers as well because teams no longer need to worry about their offer potentially being matched. That may even have a further flow on effect of lowering the compo pick of certain players *cough* Vickery *cough*, who would never have netted their club that in a trade.

With this new CBA, apparently 1m/year now is what 850k/year used to be... so what does that say about North's 10m over 9 years for Kelly? That'd be underpaying at the height of his career? I also wonder if the Boyd contract has this 20% increase built into it. Maybe that's not as overpaying as much as it used to be.

Boyd should be happy if his current salary only goes down 20% - Even if that happens he's still massively over-paid.

Can also receive nothing if the player's age is high enough and/or salary is low enough. Carlton got nothing for Waite, I know there are others that I can't think of atm.

Yeah, depends on that algorithm. Below a certain band a compensation pick would be meaningless anyway.

Ah the algorithm, always makes me laugh when the AFL come out and say it's "highly complex". To me that's code for they've got no idea what it is or how it works but they're sticking with it.

Would chuck our 3rd rounder at Harley Balic

I hope that we are one of the clubs inquring about Kelly. Unsure whod wed give up bit Mummy on last legs. 1st round pick (10)

Pick 10 + Kobe Mutch + Leunberger/TBC for Kelly offer 10 mill over 8 years

Realise that wont cut it. Maybe a 2nd round pick aswell next years

Reports that we are one of three clubs (Adelaide, West Coast and Essendon) who were not allowing players to sign contracts with built in clauses to receive a pay increase with a new CBA deal. They simply get the amount they signed for. Would make sense as to why Parish, Daniher and Zaharakis were refusing to sign until the new CBA deal was done. Would also potentially leave us with war chest to pick up a big name.

Still can't help but think we're right in the race for Martin.

Can you provide a link to that report? Or explain why we couldnt sign contracts with those clause

It was reported by Sam McClure on radio. It might not be true but it would make some sense given the Parish, Zaharakis and Daniher situation.
And it's not that we couldn't sign those contracts but we reportedly talked players into signing without that clause (probably on slightly bigger deals anyway).

What I took from the story was the players could only be upset with their managers and not the club. Surely managers would have the industry know-how to skim through a contract and spot this from a mile away. Long story short, you signed the contract, tough t***ies. I think from a club stand point it's an incredibly smart move. Having the increased buffer now entitles you to give Daniher, Parish and Zaharakis what they're worth and offer big money to another star. Kudos Essendon.

Does this mean Richmond won't be able to match an offer for Martin at all and will only get AFL compo if he chooses FA?

Martin for free trade wise would be the biggest get ever.

What compo would they likley get guessing first round pick can they get more?

Hardwick and Gale didnt talk that positively about him staying

Jackson Nelsons another we need to be in the ear of if the price is right. Not too disimilar to Hunt from melb bit slower but stronger and can tag onball if required.

perfect replacement for baguley and to release mcgrath further up field if required

Would prefer Matt Shaw (Gold Coast Suns)

We have plenty of young options to play as a small in the back half. Gleeson, McKenna, McGrath, Ridley, Mutch (can rotate back there), Morgan (even though I think he'll get delisted), Ambrose (think he can play this role too) and McNiece all have at least 5 year careers ahead of them. In any case someone like Brett Bewley can be taken in the rookie draft to fill that role.
