Appears to lack confidence with the ball in hand ATM.

Isn't going for the long runs he was previously. Looks keen to give it off.
I missed the Eagles game, but in the previous few, he has appeared to decelerate very quickly. He finds a gap, bursts, then slows down and doubts himself.

He's so far down on confidence that he just needs to keep it simple. Defend his man, support his teammates, and take the gaps that open up for him. He does need to get more physical though, if somebody is checking him closely he needs to initiate the contact on his terms.

Sorry if someone has mentioned

Just read the herald sun barometer/ injury update.

The summary made me laugh when it started off by saying "the dogs had a charmed run to the premiership last season" or along those lines. Massive injuries, two interstate finals is a charmed run???

Why let truth get in the way of a good story? Never stopped the Hun in the past, so why should it now?

Forgive me for not believing that Wayne "wife-beater" Carey knows the best way to deal with conflict, but I don't think that's a good idea. If JJ hits someone in a way that is strong enough to actually be a deterrent, he's looking at a Tom bugg style 5+ weeks on the sidelines. In those five weeks, he could better spend his time on the field, dealing with tags and actually learning how to play through them. If he goes and punches a tagger, that really only proves that he can't handle the pressure, and other teams will tag him in the future anyway. When bugg returns, do you think opponents would be scared of giving it to him? The only way for him to break this cycle is to start playing well despite the tag.
Yes, but it's not just a tag, it's the bloke you're playing on constantly knocking/elbowing you in the back/side and other players coming out of their positions to do the same. It may be easier for midfielders to escape this type of attention because they have licence to run anywhere on the park and shake the tagger off. If you're in a designated position it's much harder. Assuming that the current situation continues and JJ is reduced to a complete non-contributor, has lost all confidence and ends up playing out the rest of his career with us in the twos, then do we just say, well that's bad luck, you just couldn't cope and see you later?
Of course he has to try to find a solution as you suggest but occasionally you have to fight fire with fire, whether this comes from him alone or the team getting behind him in a much more physical way, I'm not sure.

I mentioned it in the preview thread but I would put JJ in the guts shadowing Sloane, if the opposition want to forget about the ball and play the man they can happily do it at every stoppage surrounded by umps and bodies flying everywhere.

If he gets a break then give him strict orders to take grass and bang it forward....NO handballing just get it the f#ck out of there!

I guess any suggestion to improve the situation is worth consideration but the reality is JJ has never shown the attributes to be a tagger or midfielder. I can't see him adjusting to the bump and grind of pack footy. Perhaps wing or small deep forward might be his go, at least while the heat is on him during this period. If however, he continues to be bashed up wherever he goes, we are still left with the problem I outlined earlier.

That's my train of thought, at the start of the season who would have thought to tag JJ instead of Bont? Now due to one coach doing it, bump and grind footy will follow JJ everywhere he goes wherever we try to hide him.

He may not be a midfielder but I would put my money on him being more effective than the guy that's on his arse or any of our current midfielders for that matter at the moment.

I just don't think he has the balls to stick up for himself just yet if he is isolated on the wing, deep forward would definitely be worth a try if Clay and Libba come back in. Libba's footy smarts for the contest are what JJ needs to learn, think back to the Hawks final where Dickson misses the 3rd? set shot, Libba was there in a flash to cut the Hawks off from getting stuck into him.

Why not try Wallis off half back and JJ forward ?

I don't get the negativity towards only JJ he has been as bad as most of them this year.

I think it comes from people sooking because he hasn't remained yet so let's blame I'm Coz that's easy

Probably easier for most including myself to try and solve one man's problems rather than the whole team, I don't think it's lost on anyone how down we have been overall.

Could Wallis be that clean user off half back much like the distributing role Mitchell plays?

Long term I think Wally is too slow for half back but I be mine this year is shit so why not try some things.

Others suggest Stringer to half back, I hate the idea but why not let's see how he goes

Let's not whimper through the year doing the same thing that hasn't work lets have a crack

Our percentage rules us out of making finals IMO so let's use the year to learn more about players and what they can do

Always wary of people who have a radical "look at me" style. Macarthy is the worst. pr0n mo, man bun and bad Tatts scream "look at me". Well over the years I've been around it normally reflects (like vanity) low self esteem. Either that or they really are attention seekers. Remember when Phil Carman first wore white boots ? The need to "appear" cool and or different. I think our boy JJ may have a touch of it. As much as I detest Akker his comments were on the button. Ok to do it but be good enough to carry it. Carman was. Macarthy won't be. JJ we will find out about.

I have neither a man bun or ever wore white boots, the most radical I got was dark blue so there goes your theory ;)

What is wrong with you dude ? How did you interpret that YOU had anything to do with my post. Paranoid much ?

Charmed run has now been redefined to "Hardest run of any team ever". Red hot WCE who got handed their biggest ever finals loss at their home ground, raining triple champs, GWS the team that smashed Sydney and I don't think could have lost to anyone but us in that prelim, and the Swans at the MCG. Minor prems, coming off 2 red hot finals wins. It's not just the best 4 games by the Dogs I've ever seen but it's the best month of footy I've seen from any club. Pretty sick and tired of hearing about all the favors we had last year to be honest. We had the 2nd worst injury list in the AFL. We had moz play with a broken back, Easton play with a dodgy ankle, Tommy boyd needed shoulder surgery, and a bunch of others too. Screw the haters.
****ing oath. They're trying to change the narrative to suit whatever it is they're now on board with. I suggest to people that every time you hear someone regurgitate this kind of bullshit, remind them of the facts starting with the West Coast elimination final and continuing through to the GF. What our team achieved in 2016 was extraordinary and that should not be forgotten or twisted in any way.

Hard to believe then negativity against one man huh. Who would do something like that?

Collective negativity is nothing like a singular person but well done you have been superb the last couple of days making completely irrelevant points.

Honestly problem an improvement from you

Jesus it was a bit of humour when you said I was drawing attention to myself in another thread, even added the wink.

Take your grumpy pills tonight did you? But I'm the negative one

Guess I add you to the list also

I'd also move JJ forward. He'd have Red and maybe Clay to protect him. Can't believe we haven't done that. Only has to kick an early goal or 2 and they'll soon stop the rot.

Either way JJ needs to lift and soon because he can't stay in the side the way he is going. His copping it from all the media ppl this week also.
Really hope he comes out and shuts em up but the side has shown no fight this year so i expect him to put in another shit performance.

Its line in the sand time. I'm sick of seeing these guys pushed around. I thought after the flag we may be able to bully teams but it has been the complete opposite. Fight fire with fire Friday night. If it means a few suspensions then so be it.

And Bevo needs to complain to the umpires that when JJ is bumped in the back it is a free kick. Umps need to do their jobs and we need to get on the whinge train so favoured by others.

Tagging is only useful if the person could do the job. Sloane would destroy JJ and would rob us of potential strengths elsewhere. A massive and definite no from me.

The only time we look dangerous was when Murph or JJ and perhaps Bont got the ball. The rest are crabbing. That is a big problem for me as it basically shows we have no faith in or forwards to win a 50/50 contest.

Start him in the goal square, he'll quickly get a free or two and a goal or two and the niggle will magically disappear. Also need someone to give Sloane an extra hard time, Libba come on down.

I hear what you're saying and it definitely wouldn't be Plan A but JJ is being destroyed anyway, Sloane handles a tag only slightly better than JJ even with the slightest bit of attention.
I think it would be worth trying just for shock value, beating an opponent rather than a tag might just simplify the game a bit for him.
