It sounds to me like Gibbs will go and we won't get any GWS midfield talent. Hopefully we can use 4 picks in the top 40 to draft a midfield but next year could be another hard season

We are still a couple of years off knowing if SOS is any good. Personally I don't he was dealt that bad of a hand.
He has so far had the use of 5 picks inside 25 including Pick 1 and 5 from the draft. He also been able to trade out 5 players who have had value inside the top 25. That is a bloody lot of assets he has used.
Those 5 traded out had value in the top 25 at Carlton or across the comp?

Rogers would have never been allowed to trade out 5 players of that value. That is the point I'm making.
I did see him totally burn pick 7 but I've also seen him trade in an A grader for a pick in the 30's so who knows
Cripps for pick 14.
No successes in the 30s I can think of.
Plenty of failures with our first and later picks ... Menzel, Lucas, Bootsma, Watson and Boekhorst for starters ...

True Cripps missing is a massive hole. But name a club that has such a dominant player that wouldnt miss him if he was out. I agree the effect is heightened because of our rebuilding status. Take Dangerfield out of Geelong (see results two years ago) Freo (last year without Fyffe) as good examples and those two clubs had mature lists not youngsters expected to step into the breach.

Probably not the best examples for your argument.

Geelong still has Selwood if danger injured.
Freo has Mundy, Blakely if Fyfe injured.

Yes, they are not as good but Point is they still have options for inside midfielder role. Carlton doesn't.

Dont know how reliable this source is as of yet but will relay here what i got told.
Carlton gone cold on Kelly
Hopper to Essendon
Carlton is trying to package a deal involving Devon Smith, Lachie Whitfield and Mathew Kennedy all GWS players obviously.
Dont know anything about what Carlton will give up or offer its just what i heard we are after. And please like i said i still dont know how reliable the source is yet.

Which only strengthens my argument. Freo in 2016 couldnt get near it despite mundy blakel but without fyfe. Same for geelong. , selwood played in 2015 and they were very average. Take just one champion mid out and they become bottom 4 sides. We have lost our two most important contested mids

I'd give up our first for that.

I think Whitfield is underrated by Melbournians and might come cheap after bad behavior. SOS would be aware of his character and could make a good decision.

Devon Smith, quaily forward/mid you'd have happy if he was your 6th string mid

Kennedy a bit of a poor mans Hopper, still very young and should develop into a solid inside mid, go nicely next to Crippa.

Be a good buy low deal with all the fanfare on Kelly and Hopper who we'd certainly be buying high on.

Pick 2/3 take it or leave it GWS

Same thing happened last year when Murph went down.

Our midfield is really really shallow at present, as Bolts said in the post match.

-defense solid
-forward really raw
-mids shallow

Me to mate. I heard Kelly and Hoppers price tag is scaring SOS off and is looking at a deal involving a bit less quality and more quantity. How true this is will come out at the end of the year i guess but from all reports SOS is not keen on paying massive overs for anyone.

So GWS could lose
Kelly
Hopper
Smith
Whitfield
Kennedy

That would be a lot even for them.

I agree our midfield depth is shallow. But I also think that ANY midfield group, NO MATTER the number of stars in it will struggle. Take Danger out of the Dangerwood combo and you have geelong bottom 4 in 2015. Take Fyfe out of Freos and you have bottom 4. Look at Adelaide when Sloane has been tagged out of the game. It would be interesting to see how the tigers perform without Dusty

Hmm. Why was Kreuzer the first Carlton player to pop into my head ............. ?

Actually not hearing its Kreuzer. The names i am hearing but also am skeptical is possibly Murphy and Macreadie but like i said this is hear say at the moment until i can get a good indicator as to whether the source is reliable.

As it stood from Saturday Night - I felt more comfortable when Tom Williamson was kicking out than Lachie Plowman.

;)

Probably says more about Williamson than it does Plowman. Tom's got a laser of a left foot and keeps it so low. Great talent identification to pick him up at 61 as a bottom aged player. He's not getting a lot of ball at the moment but his future is bright.

These are the sorts of picks that over 4-5 years mean that you play finals consistently v never or just bob up into finals then back down again

Have heard the same on Whitfield and smith not sure about the others.

It's a valid point. Losing Cripps and Curnow has exposed a serious lack of depth in the midfield and Im sure even the most optimistic here acknowledge that.
There is merit in bringing in more 'solid citizens' for another season before going the marquee signing on the 2019 season.
