hopeful he will play? my god surgery is amazing these days
It's insane. My mate had it 10 years ago and was bed ridden for a month. To be up and playing AFL a week a bit later after having an organ removed is insane

That gives him about nine days to be fit for Thursday night. Surely he has no hope whatsoever?

Eddie got back in 13 days.

The only hope is that Eddie's appendix burst, whereas Sloane's apparently hasn't. So maybe that makes for a quicker recovery?

It would be touch and go at best though.

Not sure if youre comparing Apples with Apples re: Betts and Sloane. One is a small forward who played in a 70 point flogging or whatever it was and the other is a contested beast midfielder who also runs hard both ways, coming into a qualifying final.

Their bodies could have recovered the same but only one would be fit enough to play their role to the required standard

It's a small setback, but Sloane will be fine by next thursday, as long as he has no complications like collections/bowel obtruction
If he has surgery today, he'll probably be discharged by the end of the week at the latest (recovery for uncomplicated appendicitis is as little as 24 hours after surgery, though 48 hours is probably more typical).
I just hope it wasn't a badly perforated appendix (if he has really been symptomatic for a week, then that's a possibility).

9 day turnaround is the killer. Surely a hard running midfielder won't be fit to play in that timeframe. From memory he's a fast healer though

Copying this from another thread. Jimmy Bartel had his appendix out in 2007 and missed the last 2 weeks of the season and was back for the first final.

Played on the 19th of August
Hospital on the 24th of August
Surgery on the 26th of August (Missed the game that day)
Missed the game on the 1st of September (Probably precautionary)
Back in the Qualifying final on September 9th

Not sure when he returned from the surgery to training though. Can't find much information on that. Surgery to playing was 14 days for him.

Let's be real, recovery until ready for elite contact sport is more like 2 weeks minimum. Not to say he won't play sore in the first final regardless.

Just pump him full of pain killers. The 2003 Lions GF team had a lot of players playing through various injuries.

"More than a third of the players who combined for the 50-point win over Collingwood on Saturday had pain-killing injections and the team brought 18 vials of pain-killers to Melbourne, compared with the one or two normally used in matches."

Jimmy Bartel had a burst (perforated) appendicitis , which does takes longer to recover from than acute (uncomplicated) appendicitis
Not sure what Sloane's situation is, but 7 days of pain is a while!

I'm sure he'll play as long as he doesn't have any complications. He was probably playing through pain on Sunday....but he still managed a lazy 38 possessions :p. If anything, he'll be in less pain next Thursday than he would've been on Sunday

Addit- if he only developed pain this morning (and not last tuesday), then it's more likely to be on the milder end (so bodes well for a speedier recovery ie home within ~48 hours , with another full week to recover before the match)
