There is no way Gold Coast or Brisbane would take him.

He would put a big sum on his head for one year. They'd lose out on the great kid they could have taken at the pick and spend $1m on a player who would sit out of football for a year, and would immediately demand a trade.

As I read the rules a player out of contract who is not traded can nominate for either the national draft or the pre-season draft. In the ND the player cannot stipulate contract length, salary etc, whereas in the PSD they can. (Refer TIPRAT drafted by Sydney in the PSD. Nobody else wanted him at that price).

As I figure it the Victorian club's will not want Lever to go to either draft. They've spent probably a year on the deal, cleared out salary cap for him, and
- if he goes to the ND they'll have to use their first rounder on him anyway, and thats taking the chance that lower clubs don't grab him first.
- if he goes to the PSD they might lose him if Carlton or North pick him (and North will have heaps of salary cap room if they don't get Martin.)

So.....he is worth at least a club''s first pick plus. The 'plus' is to get it done quickly and to make sure they get the player they have been planning for. And they'll want to be fair to the player they've told they'll bring to their club. (Refer Dangerfield). They won't want to leave the player hanging uncertainly for the draft.

So what's the 'plus' worth?

They won't want to give up a best 22 player, so unless there's a player we rate and they don't (refer Gore) it has to be some sort of draft pick/swap/future pick.

Good news if Dusty signs with Richmond, then either Carlton or North will have money to get him in the Pre season. And Kelly can only go to one club.
So that means if it Melb, Collingwood or Western Bulldogs want him they have to deal.

Lever is going to be a very good player, no doubt, but if we lose him it doesn't point to a failure on our behalf in any way ... some players gonna play.

Surely we can see why JL would take a serious look at the offers from the big Vic clubs? I think it's a clear numbers game. 10 clubs in Victoria, most of the talent comes from Victoria, eventually the stars will align where a good Vic player on an "interstate" list will get an offer they can't ignore.

Here's my attempt at Lever Trade Logic:
- Lever is worth a single digit draft pick plus - the "plus" because he's a proven player vs the 60% (or whatever) chance of getting the same player in the draft - and not producing the same output until 2 years' time.
- The "plus" is not going to be a first 22 (at Adelaide) player - that's overs that we'll never get.
- The "plus" of a non-first 22 player is not acceptable; we've loaded up in that area already (which is good, we have decent depth).
- The "plus" might be a swap of seconds, or and outright future second, or somesuch.
- Or maybe a double-digit draft pick and a slightly better "plus".

Now, I know that some people will say that the "acceptables" that I've listed above are unders, two first rounders minimum, and all that, and if we accept that, we're getting bent over (again). I would say that supporters will never be happy unless the trade is a clear win for us, and that's just not going to happen in the real world. Don't forget the other club has to agree to knowingly paying overs for us to get overs.

On that basis, I'd accept a single digit pick "plus" as being the best that's going to happen.

The question of using the PSD as a threat? Well, if it gets to an offer like "our first round draft pick only", then I can see why people would want to "be tough". But at what expense? If you're quite sure you're not going to do better than that offer, will you throw it away for the sake of face? What do you get for that, apart from satisfaction?

Yes, if the other club was offering massive unders, sure. But that's not - IMO - going to happen. No club (except Carlton ) is going to go way unders on a deal like this. They will offer something decent, but maybe unders in our eyes. So if it is "decent", then what do you gain by going all Choco on it? Nothing. All you do is lose.

My prediction: The ultimate deal will be "OK", it won't be massive overs, and the club will have to bear the wrath of the BF Adelaide Board for "being bent over - again".

I think something else that needs to be factored in is how much value os placed on Jake as a known quantity at AFL level. His age. Leadership qualities (potential future captain?). He was a first round pick. He is rated as a top 1-4 from that draft based on performance to date.

While clubs have become much better at identifying players at the draft. There still exists some risk with the ultimate performance of players drafted. There need to be a premium placed on Jake based on this. He is ready to go and a known quantity. And at 21 it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect there will be some improvement in his development.

Now what would be good value, My absolute twisted arm min is 2017 1st (top 10) and a 2018 2nd, Mainly due to 2018 draft batting deeper,
My Preference and the one I believe we should push a 100% for is 2017 1st and 2018 1st. We don't need a Player swap we need low 1st round Picks and have an opportunity as the Clubs that are interested in him have low picks, lets not stuff that opportunity up by going for a Player. Unless that player is an absolute match winning Gun.

So we're willing to give up a potential gun, team leader type player for a crap shoot.

What a crap shot 2 x 1st round is not crap, even a 2017 top 10 with a 2018 potential early 2nd is not great but still not crap.
Need to remember he is only a potential gun, and anyone willing to put money before the club is not a future leader nor someone we really want to be a future leader of the club.

I understand the mechanism is there for it to happen, an existing player land where they don't want to be......but it does not happen.
