At what point will Lever's presence become detrimental?

His form is very patchy, as others have noted he now has minimal leadership/organisational influence in defence as his voice and instruction has dropped off. Looks a completely different player now the swagger and arrogance has gone.

It all comes down to attitude and form, he is very professional and as long as he maintains this and his form he will be right

I can't see it getting to that point everyone wants a Flag and the team will put everything aside to run hard at this

Losing a guy because he wants more money is not a knock on our culture or a real sign we are doing something wrong.

Especially if he goes to a club like Melbourne who have not played Finals in about a decade.

Even the great Paul Roos could not get them into Finals. And last weekend we saw the Dees players were not hungry enough for success to beat Collingwood to make it. The Dees were insiped in that game. That is their culture.

There is no go home factor for Lever, the decision is pure $$$$

I was told last night the club is more disappointed with Jake's backflip and at least with Danger the club always knew that their was a go home factor playing out with his partner and family

Jake himself earlier in the year wanted to talk to Pykey and told him that he not only wanted to stay but also wanted to be a future leader of the club and he trusted that the deal would get done before end of year

In this case a club is willing to pay way over market rates and money talks

If your telling me brisbane or GC wouldn't want Lever and wouldn't have the $$$$$ to spend big then I'm lost

they have thin lists Ablett won't be there next year they should have more cap room than any other club and I'm sure a 21 year old AA squad member would appeal

They don't even need to worry about trading as they finished bottom 2 straight to the PSD

Jenkins was recapping on 5AA how Pyke announced Govs re-signing to the players after a team meeting and the players went nuts, imagine how Lever would have been feeling then?

That was my first thought upon hearing that. How awkward would that announcement have been for him.

I just picture all the other players celebrating and Jake just sitting there, staring at his feet.

He goes into the PSD with a million dollar one year contract as his demand. You get him, spend a million bucks on a player that never plays for you, and trade him the following year for MAYBE a late first.

Brisbane and Gold Coast are broke. If you think the AFL would let them do that (and all their staff are AFL men), then you're nuts.

He would not sit out a year of football. Cam McCarthy is the only player I can think of that has actually done this, and I think there were definitely other issues at play there.

As I read the rules a player out of contract who is not traded can nominate for either the national draft or the pre-season draft. In the ND the player cannot stipulate contract length, salary etc, whereas in the PSD they can. (Refer TIPRAT drafted by Sydney in the PSD. Nobody else wanted him at that price).

As I figure it the Victorian club's will not want Lever to go to either draft. They've spent probably a year on the deal, cleared out salary cap for him, and
- if he goes to the ND they'll have to use their first rounder on him anyway, and thats taking the chance that lower clubs don't grab him first.
- if he goes to the PSD they might lose him if Carlton or North pick him (and North will have heaps of salary cap room if they don't get Martin.)

So.....he is worth at least a club''s first pick plus. The 'plus' is to get it done quickly and to make sure they get the player they have been planning for. And they'll want to be fair to the player they've told they'll bring to their club. (Refer Dangerfield). They won't want to leave the player hanging uncertainly for the draft.

So what's the 'plus' worth?

They won't want to give up a best 22 player, so unless there's a player we rate and they don't (refer Gore) it has to be some sort of draft pick/swap/future pick.

That creates an interesting situation. I wonder if there is a scenario where a deal can't get done in time, so Lever signs a 2 year deal with Adelaide, rather than risk getting picked up by a Brisbane or GC in the PSD.

Isn't that what happened with Luke Ball? He put 2 years / 500K on himself in the draft, which nobody except Collingwood was willing to meet...then signed a 1-year extension at peanuts.

I thought the AFL had changed the rules in regards to this. So any contract extension done after a player is drafted can't be at significantly different to the original figure. So you can do 2 years at $600k/year and then extend it to 3 years at $600k/year, but you can't add an extra year on at just $100k/year (which would make the overall deal effectively drop to $433k/year).

That said, I find it hard to begrudge Lever for taking the money. If a club is offering him $300k/year+ more than what the Crows are willing to offer I’d probably have difficulty turning that money down, especially when it also meant I could be closer to family.

This is what worries me.

I've reconciled the fact he's leaving, whatever, he's not an AA midfielder so as long as we get a decent trade deal he can GAGF.

BUT all I care about, and I'm sure all of us are like minded, is that we WIN THE FLAG! Now, the moment Lever's distraction, poor form, decreased cohesion with other defenders comes into play to the level that it affects our chances then I want him dropped without fear or favour. Conversely, if he is helping the team better than the next man in then he stays.

I tend to agree, I have no doubt that when Jake spoke to Pyke that at that time he had full intention to sign with the club however he or his Manager wasn't expecting the significant offer which they have received

With this in mind there is no doubt his destination club knew that they had to pay serious $$$ to get Jake to leave an environment that he was happy in and one that has its premiership window open

Personally I'm ok with players making a decision that is a commercial decision as long as they don't roll out the BS that it wasn't about money

Who knows, maybe he's told the players that a Vic club are offering 6 x 900k and we are only offering 4 x 600k. I'm sure they'd understand.
