Melbourne have said that they seriously considered drafting Lever in 2014 (which meant using either pick 2 or 3) but the knee injury scared them away.

Roll the clock forward three years, knee comes good, Crows put the development into him and Melbourne are now (apparently) all over him. Without the knee injury he goes top 3 then as an unproven rookie. He is now a first 18 in the minor premiers side and an AA squad member.

If I was at the negotiation table I'd want 2017 and 2018 Melbourne first round picks using Melbourne's own comments agaisnt them...if he was borderline top 3 in 2014 as a rookie he is worth a lot more now.

We planned on using Richmond's pick 12 from the failed Trengove trade to select Lever.

OK - so he goes to the PSD with a (say) price of $800K x 5 years on his head.
Brisbane & Gold Coast - if they even bother to keep a pick for the PSD - will one of them take him? Will they stump up $800K x 5 years for a third tall defender who doesn't want to be there? What - with the idea that they can on-trade him for a profit 1-2 years later? Assuming that a Vic club (of Lever's choice) will still be willing to pay up at that time?

I don't think so. I think threatening "Brisbane or Gold Coast in the PSD" is an empty threat. OK, then you've got North and Carlton, so maybe one of them would be silly enough. Then Freo, then Collingwood - and now we're getting to the point where one of the contenders for his signature could pick him up for free.

The only way he goes to the PSD, IMO, is if Melbourne/Collingwood or whoever make a ridiculously low/stupid trade offer. Which won't happen. They'll offer something decent. It may not be enough to satisfy Crows supporters, but it'll be enough to make the PSD a non-starter.

What idiot at Richmond was willing to give up pick 12 for Trengove? I bet Melbourne were having a "start the car" moment until the negative medical report came back and killed off the deal.

Just wonder if anyone knows the answer to a couple of questions I have always wanted to know.
Can a player nominate a contract term and amount before the draft and if so why don't all 17 year olds go down this path with a club?
Can a player nominate just for PSD?
And can clubs trade PSD picks?

A player nominating for the ND can't stipulate any contract conditions.

He can though, if he nominates for the PSD (as Tippett did).

It's up to the player which draft he nominates for.

We don't need a Lever replacement. We have Doedee who can actually play on a player as well as intercept. There is also Cheney who while not as gifted as Lever is still a decent quality AFL player in our system. We want midfielders thanks.

Problem is we already have Alex Keath who is Frost but with a much higher ceiling. Frost would be SANFL depth.

Except Frost has shown that he clearly wasn't worth pick 23, so that has no relevance. You conduct trades based on what a player's currently worth, not on what a poor team incorrectly thought that player was worth 3 years ago.

I really hope we don't take Frost off Melbourne's hands in a trade, why would we waste a list spot and salary cap space on a list-clogger like Frost? We've already made that mistake with Gore.

Excellent ball-winner, tackles hard and is good in close. But yes, his kicking has regressed substantially which is disappointing. Was a silky left footer and kicked quite a few goals as a junior and in his first year with us, but doesn't hit targets with regularity now. Seems as his inside game improved, his outside game suffered dramatically.
