from Nick Bowen today 2018

GOLD Coast's Tom Lynch, Rory Sloane, Max Gawn and Jeremy McGovern headline 2018's list of prospective free agents.

The AFL won't release its official 2018 free agency list until early next year, but AFL.com.au has compiled its own preliminary list (see below).

The list is chock-full of talent across every line.

Of the players under 30, the midfield group includes Sloane, Andrew Gaff, Luke Dahlhaus, Tom Liberatore and Mitch Wallis, while the key-position group includes Lynch, McGovern, Tom McDonald, Ben Reid and Dylan Grimes.

Elite defenders Brodie Smith, Nick Smith and Neville Jetta are also on the list, along with ruckmen Gawn, Tom Nicholls, Tom Bellchambers and Scott Lycett. from my iPhone

Come home Rory.

Goldstein went from diamonds to charcoal.......on 7% of the pre 2017 salary cap.

Theres no doubt the form of ruckman fluctuate the most of any players in the AFL. We havent had a consistent top ruckman in the league since Dean Cox and Sandi in his prime. Goldy and Gawn were rubbish this year and somehow Kreuzer comes out and has a blinder. They are a strange group.

I saw good signs from Goldy in his last 2 games where he was getting a heap more possession around the ground but if we were seriously going to trade Preuss we would want a fit and healthy 25 year old ruckman ready to go on our list and there arent that many of them around who arent complete spuds.

BBB should never ruck again IMO - He is now our rolls royce and as such should be treated that way. He already has a bad knee - if he hurt it in some stupid ruck contest i would never forgive the coaching group.

I wouldnt trade Preuss for picks though. If we got them wrong and gave up a serious talent it would be ridiculous

The last premiership team to have a truly dominant tap ruckman was Geelong (Ottens) and West Coast (Cox) before them who were both absolute beasts around the ground. Dominant tap ruckmen are no longer an essential requirement of a good team. Obviously I'm not saying tap ruckmen are dead but they're not as important as they once were.

The last five premiership ruckman:

Jordan Roughead
Ben McEvoy
David Hale
Max Bailey
Shane Mumford

I think trading Preuss or Goldy is the way to go, put the feelers out and see what we can get.

Swans ran with Pyke in tandem with Mumford though.

Hawks always had two ie Hale + Bailey, McEvoy + Hale, McEvoy + Ceglar.

I don't get this as the argument. The Swans and the Hawks also had premiership standard teams across the board.

Having a second high grade ruckman is a luxury that is useless if the guys around them aren't good enough. It should be regarded as a cherry on top.

I think second rucks are optional but the success teams have had with them debunks the theory that rucks are no longer important in the game.

Sure, but we started talking about it from a North perspective where our list sits now which I think is premature. I can see now the conversation has evolved though.

Hi Ralphy,
One from left field, could you see someone like Goldstein join the Dogs? And perhaps a move down back beckons for Roughead. Thoughts?

Jon Ralph
michael I was in at SEN and asked him today as he crossed paths. He said he listens to SEN all the time and he gets told he is going to a new club every day but he hasn't had any talks about moving at all and wants to stay. All comes down to trade period. If the Roos miss on Kelly as well, they would be mad not to trade him in for a high pick and try to get new talent into their squad.

Brad Scott said as much when he was re-extended. Said the club had to do what was best for it and not best for the individuals

I still shake my head on the McEnvoy trade ......I'm waiting for a payback, back towards St Kilda one day/year.

GOLDSTEIN: I'M GOING NOWHERE

NORTH Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein has opened up about his mental demons this year and quashed any suggestions he has been or could be put on the trade table before his current contract expires.

The 2015 All-Australian is contracted with the Kangaroos until the end of 2019 but has been the subject of constant trade speculation over the past 12 months, particularly after what he described as a “bitterly disappointing” season this year.

“I wouldn’t have signed a three-year contract last year if that (staying at North Melbourne) wasn’t what I wanted to do,” Goldstein said on SEN radio.

“At no point have myself, my management or even the footy club or any other footy club shown any interest in getting rid of me or taking me so as far as I’m concerned I’m a North Melbourne player.”

The 29-year-old was dropped to the VFL for two weeks at Round 18 after battling poor form throughout the year at AFL level, which he said was all down to issues “above the shoulders”.

Goldstein said he had hit rock-bottom in Round 16 when he missed a set shot at goal against Fremantle which would have won North Melbourne the game.

“Early on I was struggling a bit mentally and then when you don’t play well that adds to the pressure as well,” Goldstein said.

“It probably all culminated with the Fremantle missing the goal before the siren. That was probably my lowest point that I realised I needed to get back on track and work out how to move forward and I’ve done a fair bit of work on that.

“I’ve been doing a fair bit off-field, trying to look after myself from a mental side of things and making sure that I’m getting the balances right.

“I’m bitterly disappointed with the year I just had but I feel like I’m in as good a place as I’ve been for a fair while and I think I’m not far off being able to get back to my best.”

He acknowledges his position and shortcomings. I don't know what more we could expect from the bloke.

If he recaptured form he strikes me as the sort of bloke that would re-sign with the club on a reduced contract.

The question remains.

Why would Collingwood trade down 15 spots just to get rid of a bloke they have the capability to delist and pay out?
Because 12 mths ago we were very interested.......I wouldnt pay overs for him but he could slot in to our playing group, again on our terms and after a very public and bewildering comments from BUCKLEY last week.

You didn't answer the question, though. They can dump him if they don't want him and keep pick 6 which is much more valuable than 21.

It's up there with suggesting we trade for a free agent that no-one really wants anyway. But even if you did want him, you wouldn't have to trade for him because, like, he's a FREE agent.

it could happen like when we traded 46 for 43 and Rawlings from the dogs, but I doubt very much you could get 6 for 21 just by taking Mayne of their hands, best we could hope for would be a swap of third and fourth round picks seeing as we have the Dogs third and fourth round picks
