I asked a couple of people who know things, and he was dropped for disciplinary reasons. Pretty sure he shouldn't be out on the piss til 5am the week before a finals campaign regardless.

Normally our club is good at coming out and saying this. If true by hiding it they have thrown Scott and selection committee under the bus. Why would they hide it?

Probably because the forward line was so insipid that they felt they needed someone up there as a target. With Hawkins roaming further up the ground, they needed Taylor to play deep. They were so desperate for goal-scoring options that they moved Bews up there late in the game.

The club got sucked in by Taylor's performance on Rance. It was never going to go that well again. Had Menzel been playing, they could have been more flexible with Taylor.

you're right...Rance is too good a player to be taken apart twice in a row by Taylor....I was hoping for a different approach, but Menzel? Not sure he has the defensive qualities to worry Rance.

We'll just have to see how we handle him in the GF.

Wrong- we performed as expected with the overachieving list we have.
I did not see a team go out there and not try.
They played to their capacity as they were allowed.
Tigers choked any confidence out of us and their manic pressure was just too much.

We have the players out there that are good enough to go all the way, except....skill wise. They do not seem to be able to execute what Scott wants them to do on a consistent basis. And you don't want that problem going into the finals.

Maybe Scott has a game plan that has Nakia, McCarthy, etc in the best 22, and he hasn't changed. Therefore get angry with Menzel, who can't land enough pressure tackles in the forward line. Motlop's 6 tackles were ridiculous. I'd rather he kicked 2 more goals and dished off 2 additional assists. He is an outside player, and I have no idea why he is worrying about getting his tackle count up. For Motlop and Menzel, putting pressure on the opposition is kicking goals. I don't want those guys second to the ball - and that is why you tackle.

Menzel isn't going to kick goals being defensive on Rance. I'd have Menzel there to kick goals. We only got 5 of them.

Exactly....which is why I pointed out he wouldn't handle Rance...We needed Menzel to kick goals yes......but we needed someone else to stymie Rance's rebounding ability. Taylor was taken apart by Rance...I would have liked Henderson to at least be given a run up forward..he wasn't having his best game anyway, and Taylor may have offered more up back...

Maybe they thought at 3/4 time that they were well in it only two goals down and the structure was working? Lets face it, the end came in a rush!

Chris Scott is publicly let hung out to dry because he dumps Menzel and we kick 5 lousy goals in a final. Menzel and the team are the victims, and coach Scott is the bad guy.

Don't believe it. That is not how clubs operate. If they want it hidden, he isn't omitted, its an injury. Omission is different.

Oh, and how come we only hear about this AFTER we lose? Gossip does not work like that.

No-one on here would deny that Clarkson is a brilliant coach and significantly better than Scott (as well as every other coach). Sadly he isn't available.

Name someone currently available who would do better than Scott. I would be interested to know.

Perhaps relations had broken down between Scott and Menzel but quite frankly if that is the case then another reason for Scott to go. Petty behavior to put your feelings over the team and winning.

Camporeale, Barker, Harvey, Burns, Sanderson, McKenna, Eade, McCartney, Voss, Caracella, Kingsley, Dew....

There is plenty of coaching talent available to be poached. I would like to see Caracella, McCartney and Adam Kingsley to replace Scott, Knights and Lloyd. Maybe Sanderson to come back into some role aswell. VFL coach?

Are they better? How can you ever know?

He's the director of coaching who worked with Chris Scott at Fremantle and then Ross Lyon for many years? And has nothing to do with any tactical aspects of the team, or selection? Ok then...

He simply hasnt been at the club long enough to have had any significant input on the gameplan. He joined Fremantle in 2010, so only spent 1 year with Scott before Scott came to us. If you're looking for coaches to blame, focus on Scott and the assistants under him, not Simon Lloyd.

I think Pies/Bombers lists are better than ours.
Our list is better than Hawks, Freo, and NM.
What does it matter- we have what we have, and have a second chance.
I wonder if our MC is as convinced as our supporters that we are gone- I mean, I wonder what they seriously and inwardly feel and believe

We've got a spine of Hawkins Selwood Taylor and Lonnegan.
All been in the top few of their positions for years.
Pies have a deeper midfield but are screwed cause they've got not much else.
Not a better list than ours.
Essendon are good but their list isn't better than ours this year. Maybe next year a few more players will step up.
& No way is Richmonds better than ours.
Reiwoldt, Rance, Martin and Cotchin,
then b & c players playing with system and a lot of spirit.

Sydney has had the benefit of two players from their academy who would have been top 10 picks, if not top 5: Heeney and Mills.

Their midfield is miles deeper than ours: Kennedy, Hannebery, Parker, Jack. Throw in Heeney and Jones, who can go through there. I'm sure there are others. And let's not forget Buddy.

Yes, they have some rookies, who they've developed really well, but they've got a better balanced list than us.

We got Hawkins who would of been a top 2 pick, and acquired Danger.
Also have both Selwoods, Danger, Duncan running through the middle.
Everyone's also been shouting the praises of Menegola and 2E this year too.
Our game plan and skills are not made for finals. Simple as that. Players don't know there teammates are going to be when under pressure and turn it over. Just no system at all.
When under no pressure were too scared to take the game on and are unable to score quickly.
Not to mention intensity. We start flat every week after a bye.
If we bought the intensity we had against the dogs and the Crows earlier this year we would of easily won on Friday.
I'm hoping we can bring that again against the Swans. If we do I think we'll win.

Lonners still is despite what people say about him.
Hawkins is.
Selwood is when fit.
Taylor nah. But we've got Henderson who has been excellent except finals.

I think Geel are like Nth Melb ( up to the end of 2016) stuck with an average list - who perform well - slightly above expectations during home and away- and then are exposed big time in the finals

If Petrie ( who has played very well for the Eagles ) and Harvey ( who was still playing really well ) Del Santo and Firrito hadnt all been sacked/finished up - plus give them the Simonds home ground advantage ( good for a couple of extra wins ) - they would have made the 8 ( like they had for the previous 3-4) years - and just like Geel they got exposed in the finals - a mile off a flag - so what do you - its a tough position to be in

Mackie and Lonegran finish up ( thats like Petrie and Harvey ) - so the Cats have to tumble down the ladder next year - which i dont think is such a bad thing - because the Geelong Brand is copping a hammering at the moment ( ie make the finals but dont fire a shot )

Because they always cover for our players. They would rather take the hit and show the players that they are supported 100%.

This has been the case for a long time. Mots and Blitz and Guthrie were very much protected by the coach and MC. Personally, I think this is good and demonstrates care, loyalty and faith, but others here have different opinions where they want players to be dropped or publicly shamed, because they should be accountable for their own performances as they are highly paid athletes with the world at their feet. Both arguments have merit. You should be aware of what support is required for a player to perform optimally, but coddle them too much and they may happily underperform, knowing that they are safe.

Also, it would be a terrible distraction for the club to constantly have to field questions about Menzel during that week up to first final (not that our performance was any better because of this). It also tarnishes Menzel's image, which has been very carefully built up and marketed as ultra-professional and someone who doesn't let things distract him on his journey to his goal.

I would also expect the Menzel would be very grateful to the coach and also very embarrassed that he let his teammates down at a crucial time. His strong hands along the wings may have been the difference, allowing better inside 50's to Taylor AND Hawkins. Rance gave Taylor a bath because he was able to be one on one with the ball dropped on Taylors head and because the other threatening inside 50 targets were up the field taking marks or out of the team due to disciplinary reasons.
