My opinion is Carlton will soften on their stance with Gibbs.

If they pass on Melbournes first pick (lever) then surely the deal will happen.
The Blues should really jump at this.

Except that's not what happened. Gibbs says he is up for the trade. Carlton say it's unlikely and we would want the mother of all deals. Crows announce Gibbs wants out to put pressure on us to deal. We never said we didn't know prior, only that we were ambushed by the Crows putting out a statement about a trade for a contracted player we were not likely to give up.

Extremely unlikely. I've said it a couple of times in this thread already... Carlton will not trade a contracted Gibbs unless it is a compelling offer for us, it's really that simple. It's not going to be a win-win for everyone concerned; if Gibbs is to be playing in anything other than Navy Blue next year, what most would consider an 'overs price' will have to be paid.

There is certainly no way we will be including a top 10 (potentially top 5) pick from a supposedly superior draft next year IMO. It would be an emphatic no.

What if it went the other way? Your outgoing included a draft pick from you this year and you got a first rounder from next year? Say your second from this year for Adelaide's first from next year?

If Adelaide turn Cameron and Lever into Gibbs and Francis (assuming Francis does a big running preseason) then they are certainly challenging again next year. Despite the "super draft" tag, it will be a late first round, so fairish.

Having said all that, seeing you guys are looking to challenge in 3-4 years time, wouldn't it make sense to get value out of Gibbs now? I think it would be bizarre not to.

If Essendon was bottom 4 I'd happily trade out Hurley or Hooker to market value, especially if it included a good pick for next year.

This should have been do-able because the two clubs are in opposite situations. CFC needs to rebuild, AFC needs to top up a good list. Should've been as easy win-win.

Why does it have to be a win-win? You can't tap up contracted, required players and expect us to just bend over and accept it because we are in a rebuild.

Imagine if we tapped up Talia all season and he wanted to come home, you wouldn't just accept a market value deal, you'd want 200% more because he's a gun and crucial to your side.

I think the one that has had none has played in more prelim finals and has just played in a gf. Imagine if that same club had had 20 or so top 10 draft pick players considering its track record for developing players

They are 44 games into a 66 game rebuild - It should be complete by the start of 2019 season with SOS having 4 drafts / Trade periods completed

The rebuild should be complete by then. All but a handful of players will remain from when Bolton took charge. From there, I expect the club will reduce player turnover and focus recruitment more on balancing the list properly position or talent wise, while putting development into the kids they’ve already drafted.

Still would not do it.
Ultimately it is still only a pick 10 for Gibbs at the most.
10th best player in a draft generally not going to be a game changer long term.
Gibbs is of more value what he helps allow the younger turks like SPS, Fisher and Cuningham do in the present as they develop without the pressure of needing to perform at the levels he can already.

If they ever started talking about gaining picks around 5 to add to the 3 we already going to use, then I would listen as the person doing the list managing but pick 10 not doing it for me in terms of excitement. I would love pick 10 as it all helps having more than one go at a top 10 pick but not for giving up a player of his value. Has to be something more exciting to let go a contracted player you value. As it was , I thought Sydney gave Tom Mitchell away too cheaply last year but guess his was coming out of contract and salary cap pressure had a say in him going cheaper than his worth.
