Another post-season clean-out, another bunch of empty lockers and discarded jumpers. Who shall step in to claim them for next season?

I've taken the assumption at this point that Crozier and Balic will be traded, and that Suban and Tabs will remain. EDIT: Weller also traded. EDIT2: Suban delisted.

Coming into the 2018 season, the following numbers are available:
  • #3 (formerly Z Dawson)
  • #5 (formerly G Ibbotson)
  • #8 (formerly N Suban)
  • #12 (formerly J Griffin)
  • #14 (formerly L Weller)
  • #17 (formerly H Crozier)
  • #24 (formerly H Balic)
  • #29 (temporarily retired)
  • #30 (formlery Z Clarke)
  • #39 (formerly J Deluca)
  • #40 (formerly S Collins)
  • #41 (formerly S Yarran)
  • #42 (formerly M Uebergang)
Obviously there's the chance that a few players will reshuffle numbers this season: particularly ones like Luke Ryan and Brennan Cox who have high numbers but are starting to get regular games. Last year Bennell changed from #4 to #13.

Unless we unexpectedly take an interest in a Category B rookie, we'll be rolling with a 44 player squad in 2018, so that means that we'll need to allocate 11 of the above numbers to new players.

Freo usually operates with 38 senior listed players and 6 rookie listed players, although they can change to 39/5 or 40/4. Of the six 2017 rookies, two were delisted (Uebergang and Deluca) and two were temporarily promoted (Nyhuis and Grey). At this stage it seems like Grey will get officially promoted, Nyhuis remains a rookie, and we'll be taking three players in the rookie draft (EDIT: we switched to a 39/5 squad, and selected two new rookies).

My guesses at this point:
  • #3 - Draft Pick #2
  • #5 - Draft Pick #5
  • #8 - Draft Pick #42
  • #12 - Brandon Matera
  • #14 - Nathan Wilson
  • #17 - Draft Pick #60
  • #24 - Draft Pick #66
  • #29 - Still retired
  • #30 - Draft Pick #71
  • #39 - Draft Pick #79
  • #40 - Rookie draft pick #5
  • #41 - Rookie draft pick #23
  • #42 - Rookie draft pick #41

I think we should allocate Matera #30 to see if we can shit the weags supporters off. :)
I think this is the greatest idea you've ever had.

I don't think the plan is to retire 29 permanently, and I don't think it should be either as much as I love Pav and he'll always be the greatest. So I think it should get allocated this year, while it's still fresh, and before it gets weird randomly taking it out of retirement.

There's some good, low numbers coming free with who's gone, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of last year's pickups change numbers

If we're unretiring 29 surely you'd give it to Brennan Cox. Another 190odd cm Woodville-West Torrens boy who can play at either end of the ground?

Hang onto it for 12 months and give it to Lukousis.

Torn. Can't imagine seeing another player wearing 29. But if one does, he has to carry the mantle and play 200+ games for the club. The number means a lot to the club and members.
Wouldn't be against retiring it though. Perhaps raise a banner 29 in the club rooms at Cockburn or even at the new Perth Stadium. He's an incredible legend

I think we should retire it. It's unlikely we'll ever have someone carry the club with the same aura Pav did. He was exceptional on and off the field and did it for 353 games, which is amazing considering he had to travel every second week. He also deserves a statue at the new ground.

I might be in the minority but I don't like retiring numbers. Looking at your locker and seeing Pav's name listed there with yours would be a massive honour for any young player and that's really good for culture. In many ways I'd rather it was a very different type of player so they aren't cast in a shadow of expectation - and so they can create their own football identity unimpeded.

Agree. Its not an Aussie Rules thing. Leave it for the basketball. More than happy for Pick 5 to take 29 now it's had a year off.

Here is an option - why dont we keep #29 and our Captain always wears it.

I want Wilson to wear number 41, so he can inherit his birthright & become Son Of Duffman. Oh yeah!
