AFL need to make a change to trading rules.

They can call it the Sooky La La Addendum.
I think there should be a 10% loading on all contracts of players who are with the club they were recruited to.

A loyalty bonus, that is lost once you are traded.

The draft is a pillar of equalisation but now it means nothing other than to facilitate trades by allows tradable currency. There needs to be something done to "make the draft great again!"

I would prefer all states have AFL funded TAC Cup style programs over AFL clubs running academies.

If all clubs academies why bother having a draft?

We may as well replicate the NRL system if we had further down the "Academies route"

Trouble is we don't have the population to supply an U18 comp anywhere close to the level of the TAC cup, unless there are only 2-3 teams in the comp.

What I think we should do, at the very least, is bring back the U19's as opposed to the U18's, but leave the U16's. Bolsters the potential quality that can be playing in that competition.

At present, our U18 comp is irrelevant, because anyone who's half a chance at AFL will dominate it and hence ends up playing Ressies/League. Question again becomes, is this the best thing for our young kids development. Unfortunately there's countless examples of 16-17 year olds playing very good SANFL league footy, going high in the draft only to be complete flops.

At present, I do agree that I don't think the SANFL clubs are the best places for elite talent. There's just no benefit to them investing properly as that benefit then gets snapped up by AFL clubs.

Not a bad idea, I quite like that, a bit like the old Veteran concessions.

It is a tough one.

But would dedicated training and development create more players capable at that level and then at AFL level compared to what we have now?

Agree with the sentiment of the four year contract for all draftees. But we are seeing players demand a trade mid contract and effectively becoming a Free Agent by setting a club of choice.

Of course you could say no trading of these players during that period. But what happens if the club wants to trade or delist them?
Academy picks work in a National Draft ... and if you have state based picks then pick trading goes up the whazoo.

The four year thing only adds another layer of protection to clubs - but there is no stopping players asking for trades mid-contract. Maybe there is a financial cost to the club that takes a contracted player? They pay half of the contract to the club losing the player? Dunno.

Wouldn't all the players likely to be drafted be in the Academies?

Also why should we (AFC) spend resources developing players for other clubs?

Got to remember all the QLD and NSW clubs are effectively bankrolled by the AFL.

Nonsense as usual.

And if you want a "slow lame trade period for the crows", have a look at what happened last year

EVERY YEAR !!! It's is not some dynamic event ... ever.

Look at how many player trades get done each year, it's always a snooze-fest :-)

Wow, you know that a good trade period isn't judged on how entertained and excited you are right?
There is still a lot of water to go under a lot of bridges.
There hasn't been a whole lot going around that we would be interested in.

Rockliff- Has been pretty obvious that we had none in him (I did)
Motlop- Lot's of conflicting stories going on here, some that we never made a serious play, managers beating it up for price.
Watts- Really, I mean he is the epitome of a flop
Sache- No one want's him, want's to go home
DMenz- as above
Saad :( - Bit player at best, would he improve our 22
Stringer- Not leaving Victoria because of his kids, also we have enough vanishing talent

Really the worst thing that we could do is trade for the sake of it and bring in a list clogger.

I still expect a few big moves though.
