Post Trade Week- (Will do a Full Phantom Draft later in the week)

This is based off gut feel/inside info/guess work -- it's not an exact science. Happy to justify selection etc.

Have wipped up 'Others" in about 5 minutes due to work commitments. If there's a spelling/grammar error, apologies!

Pick 1: Brisbane Lions: Luke Davies-Uniacke

Others: Paddy Dow seems like the only other contender for the No.1 pick, with everything I hear suggesting Rayner isn't the Lions no.1 (he isn't the consensus No.1 around the place either)

Pick 2: Fremantle: Adam Cerra
Others: Freo have liked Cerra for a long time and I thought Pick 5 they'd consider him, but now may grab him at 2. Andrew Brayshaw another they've watched and liked throughout the year. Too early to consider Brander/Naughton. Already have a lot of Rayner 'types' - Dow could be considered too.

Pick 3: Carlton: Paddy Dow
Others: Picking a 'full-time' midfielder might see them grab Dow or LDU/Cerra if available. Darcy Fogarty another name that doesn't go away - but they might hope that he gets past North at 4 & to their next Pick at 10. Andrew Brayshaw would also be a candidate.

Pick 4: North Melbourne: Cam Rayner
Others: Have had multiple people mention to me over the last 96 hours that North are fans of Fogarty - but he's not someone I'd take this early. X-Factor Rayner should appeal to build their future around, Stephenson's strong 2nd 1/2 to the year might see him considered too.

Pick 5: Fremantle: Andrew Brayshaw
Others: Some people close to Brander continue to suggest that Freo have been right into them - some in the know say Naughton is another they might take, others say he isn't going to be considered. Brayshaw seems the best fit here.

Pick 6: Collingwood: Nicholas Coffield
Others: They might consider Naughton as a tall defender - but Coffield makes sense here as the best available. Aiden Bonar's strong 2nd half to the year will make him appeal heavily. They were the first club to speak to Nathan Murphy earlier in the year, but it's too early for him.

Pick 7: St Kilda: Jaidyn Stephenson
Others: Best available here - Saints will grab a slider if a tall goes above them.

Pick 8: St Kilda: Aiden Bonar
Others: Best available here - Saints will grab a slider if a tall goes above them but couldn't see Bonar being overlooked. Might look at Dandenong Stingrays teammate Hunter Clark. Saints were keen to add another KPD - but they may wait til next year after grabbing Logan Austin in trade week.

Pick 9: Western Bulldogs: Aaron Naughton
Others: Hands down the hardest pick inside the top 10 - who do they take? They've liked Nathan Murphy, but could hope he gets later. Fogarty would have to be a chance too. Small forward like Jack Higgins another.

Pick 10: Carlton: Darcy Fogarty
Others: Charlie Constable is one that SOS would take, while some sources say this is the furthest Bonar will get with the Blues unlikely to let him get past.

Pick 11: GWS: Jack Higgins
Others: Everyone linking them with Higgins makes me worried that this pick might not be as easy as it seems, especially when they could've grabbed Ainsworth last year and took Taranto. Watch this space with GWS.

Pick 12: Adelaide: Hunter Clark
Others: Best available, would grab D.Fogarty surely if he gets through.

Pick 13: WCE: Oscar Allen
Others: They need mids - but there isn't a suitable option here. Allen next best player on the board and a WA prospect. Clark would fit the bill if he slides. Constable's running in WA might be an issue - but he could be a project midfielder if they can get him up to speed.

Pick 14: Sydney: Nathan Murphy
Others: Seems the best fit here for the Swans - can play at either end. Constable another candidate.

Pick 15: Brisbane: Charlie Constable
Others: Best available here - but the fear could be that he is gone before this pick & it'd be very hard to see who the Lions grab at Pick 15. They also have Pick 18 - might look to take an outside mid or add some speed such as Petruccelle or Lochie O'Brien. Unlikely to take a tall with Ballenden's bid coming in the 20s.

Pick 16: Western Bulldogs: Ed Richards
Others: Murphy will be there man if the Swans don't take him. Could they take Gryan Miers this early? Richards' speed will appeal, as could Jack Petruccelle. Good chance to bid on Naish.

Pick 17: Richmond: Jarrod Brander
Others: Best fit to grab a tall. If Oscar Allen gets here that'd make sense - think Sam Hayes will be grabbed at their next pick, but he has a lot of work to be done on his running. Naish bid could come at Pick 16 - otherwise they'll be able to use Pick 20 as well. Lot of talk Richmond like Noah Balta too.
Love the Richards pick, and the idea that we are keen on Murphy. But Naughton? Our tall defender stocks runs deep these days, with Trengove, Adams, Cordy, Young, Roberts, Collins and NMM all either ready or developing. Another developing tall defender is the last thing we need. Agree it's a tough pick though, hoping there's a slider that makes it easy for us. Would have gone Murphy from those available personally.

EDIT: I now see you've covered exactly this with Dannnnnnnnnn.

Love your work Bish. If Brander slides to our pick and the doggies bid on Naish at 16, do we match and hope Brander continues to slide to 20? Who do you see Richmond taking with 20 + 25?
Cheers mate!

Gday Mate, Im interested in how you rate this years top 5 players in comparison to previous years top 5's. If we use say Raynor, LDU, Dow, Cerra, Stephenson/Coffield(whichever you prefer) and measure them against the likes of (2016 class Mcgrath, Taranto, Mcluggage, Ainsworth, setterfield) , (2015 class Weitering, Shache, Mills, Oliver, Parish) , ( 2014 class Mcartin, Petracca, Brayshaw, Pickett, De goey) , (2013 class Boyd, Kelly, Billings, Bontempelli, kolojashnij) how do you see them stacking up. Could you Rank these 5 drafts and show me where you see the 2017 edition fitting? Thanks in advance.

Hey Bishop,

Is there any chance that Hayes is still available at Carlton's pick 30? Would like him in navy blue but for me pick 10 is too high

Wouldn't rule it out. So there is some chance.

is it true that Carlton are odds on to take Cerra? also, you mentioned North being interested in darcy Fogarty with pick 4, would be a bold but great move in the long run imo, is it likely? cheers

Wouldn't say anyone is odds on to be selected by anyone. The only pick I'd be reasonably confident in is LDU to Lions.

I don't have Fogarty inside my top 10.

Bishop WC will be playing home games at the new stadium that has very similar dimensions to the MCG. Does that make Constable a better fit for them at 13?

Possibly - but for me normally the 'head recruiter' watches the players throughout the year & I have hardly seen Rohan O'Brien at Sandy this year. Nash their other guy has seen most, but last year O'Brien was at all of Venables' games I reckon.

Maybe that's just a gut feel. Look it's a chance - but time will tell.

Think Richmond match if the bid came that late to the their first pick.

Balta/Hayes are others in the mix. Few people linking McCartin to one of those picks - but we'll see.

If I had to rate them I'd go:

2013
2016
2015
2014
2017

problem is, we're hand picking the best players from those drafts. dont have the benefit of hindsight with the 2017 draft yet.

2017 crop is being underrated i think. but time will tell.

I don't agree - when the top 10 have more ? marks on them than other drafts & the poor depth - it's going to be a shocker. Time will tell - but considering clubs were throwing away 2nd rounders last week at Trade Week, shows you what they think of the depth.

Agree regarding depth.

But there's every chance the best 5 players from this draft are better than what was listed from the 2014 draft above

Pick 17: Richmond: Jarrod Brander

You better not be toying with my emotions bucko  Brander sounds perfect!

Just on the draft, a sliding tall does make a lot of sense.

1. Brisbane - Need midfielders, will get Ballanden
2. Fremantle - Also need midfielders, and seem more likely to pick a local given trade week. Also too high?
3. Carlton - KPF set plus need midfielders
4. North - need, and I mean need midfielders
5. Fremantle - see 2
6. Collingwood - may pick a tall forward, but need defenders too
7-8 St Kilda - McCartin and Bruce and need midfielders
9 Footscray - just drafted a tall and have Boyd and Schache in their team
10 Carlton - see 3
11 GWS - Patton, Cameron and Lobb
12 Adelaide - may go tall defender to replace Lever or midfielder, but I'm not sure they go for a KPF who generally take time given they're in a premiership window and have a good forward setup
13 West Coast - forwardline looks set and probably need more grunt and pace in the midfield
14 Sydney - may pick a tall, although they may recognize the need for pace in the midfield
15 Brisbane - see 1, plus I reckon Brisbane might be a bit gunshy about drafting an interstate KPF who leaves early and they get nothing out of him because KPFs take time
16 Footscray - see 9

So clubs like Adelaide, GWS, St Kilda, Carlton, North, West Coast seem set for talls, Footscray just traded for one, and Brisbane have been burnt by drafting talls early plus need a lot of midfielders.

That leaves Fremantle, Collingwood and Sydney as potential party poopers. The real question then is, does Richmond draft say the third ranked KPF in the draft if these clubs go tall?

Odd question, but what is Jarrod Brander's tank like as I look at his build, and look how good he seems to be when the ball hits the deck and I think he could be a really large midfielder?

I don't think so. His endurance 21.1 Yo-Yo, 6min 58s in the 2km don't really suggest to me that it's an option.

Can I ask where you've seen Dalrymple most then? And who he might have been there to see?

I could be wrong but wouldn't those numbers be close to top 25 in the AFL combine? I mean 6 minutes 58 seconds is okay when you consider that 10th got 6 minutes 25 seconds.

The average at the National Combine was (59 players tested):
21.0 for the Yo-Yo
6min 49s for the 2km time trial.

I was told about Richmond / McCartin about a month ago but more as a late selection, I thought if Naish gets bid on with either #17,#20,#25 then we would have the 2 3rd rounders available to use on McCartin - Cant see Richmond selecting him with the 3 picks above

Who has Rohan O'Brien been looking at mate?

Not sure - but he hasn't been at as many Victorian games as he was last year 'live'

Can I ask where you've seen Dalrymple most then? And who he might have been there to see?

See him around the traps at school footy & the usual TAC games. Nobody really that stands out that he would've watched more-so than others.

I also heard O'Brien had been absent with Nash doing the major amount at TAC games. Where is Rohan I hear you say. If I was Vozzo, I would be recommending he better start polishing up his CV. His track record has not been great.
